10:32 is the moment after thirty-four years of playing guitar, that I finally figured out WHY a II-V-I chord progression works. Instead of viewing it as a box, it makes more sense as a straight line. I now have a better way to visualize the progression. This video just unlocked a whole new set of riffs/licks for me. Thank you, you wonderously beautiful man you.

Paul this was simply a joy to watch and absorb. Additionally the overlaid notation is absolutely next level!! Just beautiful. I haven't been playing all that long but there is something about jazz chord voicings that just make me sigh. Blessings from Australia.

some forty years ago I was hired to sit in as accompaniment for a jazz singer at a little bistro. I was reading charts I had never seen before that evening. I remember listening to the melody of My Funny Valentine for the first time as we played, it was so beautiful and I had no idea where it was going or what my chords would sound like next. I had to remind myself to pay attention to what i was doing and not screw this up by listening too much. But it was so engaging creating the music in a live performance setting while listening to it as all new.

When Paul Davids started playing My Funny Valentine, immediately an old classic black and white movie popped up in my head with soft rain falling in the background as the Man smokes a cigar looks at a beautiful woman walking past him. I struggle with anger. It shifts my attitude toward the negative, a constant radiation of heat from my core. But then I sat for a while with an old friend on a computer screen and the two of us admired how beautiful a song can be. I enjoyed the sway of that old, classic sound that blues seems to make, older than the instrument he played. Older than either of us. It was truly romantic, the way it reminded me of my beautiful girl, but also of love itself. It was as if I was playing the role of every star-crossed lover at once beneath the soothing tones of steel strings. And i wasn't angry anymore. Thankyou for that.

Well done, Mr. Davids. Thank you 🙏
I can't say it's not a beautiful song. Your breakdown and insight is articulate and gives me a new appreciation for the song.
My first encounter with "My Funny Valentine" was in the early 80s when I sang bass in the junior high vocal jazz ensemble. It was a popular number back then. It seemed that every vocal jazz ensemble sang it at every competition that year, and we rehearsed it ad infinitum, ad nauseum. I grew to loathe the song...
Thank you for allowing me to appreciate its complexity and beauty once again.

Thanks a lot, Paul, for beautifully featuring this beloved song! Can't wait to practice your chord-melody...
One more LINE I'd like to add: beginning with the two-bar "staaaaaaay" in what I believe is 27th bar I play decending chords Cm11, B7(#11), Bbm11, Bb7(#11) to AbM7. This is extra beautiful as the singing voice "stays" for two whole bars, before coming to the conclusion that "each day is Valentine's Day". Just love it!
