Making Natasha Beads From Polymer Cane Pieces

- Video #357: In this video I'll show how to use the end pieces from your polymer clay canes to make mirror image Natasha Beads.
* Answering the age old question of, what to do with the "waste" end pieces from your polymer clay canes. Making a Scrap Cane Natasha Bead is the perfect solution!

I think the woman bead you have there looks like an angel. She has wings and if you look at her head she even has a halo. I wonder if you can remember what you were going through at the time you made it. Perhaps she came to encourage or bless you during a time of need. If I were you I would keep that bead close and look at it whenever I needed a boost. I see that bead as a miracle especially for you and anyone you show it to. Of course, not to misdirect you from it's true source.
What a neat spin on Natasha beads. That angel one was incredible, it even had shading on the side of the robe. It's hard to believe random chance created it. To me, the first cut of the demo piece looked like a pair of rearing tigers facing each other. With the right colours, this would be a great technique to make Xmas ornaments.

Fabulous video! I got a gorgeous Natasha bead necklace at our Polymer Guild holiday party gift exchange and tried about 18 different ways to get the "Natasha" look on all 4 sides on a similar necklace. No luck.... However, NOW I'm ready to head out and use an early flower cane to try your method. Oh boy Oh boy Oh boy!!!
My daughter (13)and I do a lot of polymer clay work, but it has mostly been simple jewelry or figurines. We came across this video tonight and fell in LOVE with the whole concept of Natasha beads! I can't wait to try them. Thanks so much for inspiring us both! --Leslie

yes, I have made beads like these, but didn't know they had an official name! Never heard of a Natasha bead, but they are so exciting when you reveal the interior !!

I've made Natasha beads before with just the one mirror image, I figured it out by accident when I was making a marble effect from cane ends, but I never knew they had a name- and I love the 4 sided ones you've came up with- very cool, thanks for sharing this :)

Not giving away any secrets. We've done fairy houses, Natasha beads, mica powders on textured clay and next month, lentil beads. So much fun meeting with people who speak clay.

Thanks so much for this video. I had heard of natasha beads, but it's been a long time. I have a lot of scrap clay that this will be great for. I haven't worked with my polymer clay in a while, but this has really renewed my interest (although I've been wanting to get back to it for a long time), especially with my recent love of making jewelry. I will definitely be using this technique to make some beautiful pendants and cabochons to utilize in my beaded jewelry. EXCELLENT VIDEO. Thanks again.

thanks for a bit of a twist to Natasha beds. I've seen it demonstrated a few times, but have never seen it shaped as you do. I've entered a swap in my PCG and if I don't have to do a huge a mount will do them in your style to make mine a bit more individual!

I'm not much into caning (takes too long and the reward never turns out like it's supposed to), but I like to do marbled natasha beads. Your cane ones are wonderful!

Hi Cindy, It's Linda K. The bead that ended up with the winged woman is amazing and beautiful! Did you notice that the lower part of your demonstration bead at about 6:15 on the video looks a bit like Edvard Munch's "The Scream?" I've never been moved to WANT to make a Natasha bead before. Now I'm feeling the inspiration!

Hi dandellion Kimban, I work with Premo clay which is sticky enough to stick to itself quite nicely. When making Natasha beads, I just press the pieces together lightly and it sticks together just fine. Hope that answers your question!

Hi HokeeDokeyHorses, you can bake your clay in the bezel, but you will need to pop it out after baking and glue it in. There are several options for gluing polymer clay. Yes, since the melting point of 925 Silver is 1639F (893C) and the baking temp for polymer clay is under 230F - 300F depending on the brand, you will have no problem putting polymer clay into a 925 Silver bezel and baking it. That goes for all metals and a lot of other materials as well. Thanks for commenting!

Thanks so much for all your tutorials. I am new to polymer clay and just finished my first necklace with matching bracelet last night. I thought it turned out pretty well for my first one. I subscribed to your site so I can continue to glean from your experience. The hardest part of making my beads was getting the holes centered so I was wondering if there was an easier way to do it. I made a cross necklace using Natasha matching up sections and slicing them thin with silver and translucent over white it turned out nice my problem is my 6 year old granddaughter brakes the thorns off the crown at the top! I have to replace them and rebake!!😊
