    The only flaw is the fact that it's a double trap, like you said at the end of your video. If you make two separate ones, you can have a sensitive trigger and another working trap at the same time. I think it is one of the best trap I have seen so far. Simple yet effective. A bigger one would catch racoons too.

  • @ryan6878
    @ryan6878 Před 6 lety +2

    From an engineering standpoint, wouldn’t it make sense to have both the trigger mechanisms on the same side of the trap? This would prevent the jolt of the trap door closing from activating the trigger, allowing you to make it more sensitive. (Great video by the way, enjoyed it as always)

    Reverse the sear geometry so that pushing the bait will set it off. That will allow you to use a lock that is less sensitive to vibration. Add some weight to the door and you have yourself one simple and effective live trap. That would even work for foxes, raccoons, squirrels, etc...

  • @samsen201
    @samsen201 Před 5 lety

    Yes the solution is what you say at the end, to build it Single and not double.
    Then to ensure keeping the big guy inside till morning, I would add a self locking mechanism at the bottom of door so once it flips back, it gets lock and does not allow the opening by mere force, from inside.
    Very interesting indeed and not sure why the current trap manufacturers not following the same book you possess or at least follow your channel!

  • @chenry7084
    @chenry7084 Před 6 lety

    A simple hinged stick attached to the door that falls in front of a block attached to the main body of the trap could act as a gravity powered latch preventing rats from being able to open the door at all. All in all seems like a good design, could probably work on gray diggers too.

    Hi, I just happened on to some of your trap videos today and I'm pretty impressed. As for this double closing door trap, I'm thinking since it's obviously the impact of the one door closing that triggers the other side, you might be able to put a thin piece of soft foam or rubber around the frame of the doors to lessen the impact when it's triggered to close. Just a thought, give it a try.
    Love the videos and the interesting designs you've built and collected.

    What I would do is take and drill two holes about 3/8” and maybe put two foam ear plugs in the top to act as a cushion when the door closes. Just have the ear plugs up enough that they catch the door but not enough that the mouse can push its way out. I bet that would take care of the false set of the other trap.

    A single trap would be good but I have an idea to make it more secure, a bolt that snaps into place, when the door slamms shut, doesn't even have to be complicated.
    I would make a set groves into the bottom, and put a trigger stick in it, when the door slams shut it gets pushed in by the door an releases a spring loaded piston, which goes through a hole on the door blocking it so that the door can't be liftet open by larger vermin.

    I’m thinking another way to rebuild it would be to let the door snap shut, with metal prongs or something of that nature, so when the door comes down, it has to be opened a certain way, so that the rat can’t possibly lift the door open. Just an idea! 😊
