Thats why i want to be a billionare, raise the RMS Queen Elizabeth, make her and even one more sistership to the world. The the S.S United states and one to two sisters for her. The i would build four more smaller agile ones. Also The QM and sisters and S.S United states would have over 400 000 shaft horses and six bladed screws and lavish interiors. I would not require payback, but it might be so popular that i break even in 5-10 years.

I remember reading somewhere that originally Cunard had thought of calling her Queen Elizabeth (the Tudor one) or Queen Victoria (I think it was) and when George V was discussing construction with the Cunard people at some event he asked, "What do you plan to call her?" The response was, "Sir, we are planning to name her after one of England's greatest queens". To which George said, "That's wonderful! My wife will be so pleased!" And thus, Queen Mary was named.

In 1966 I had a summer job in a hotel in Cowes on the Isle of Wight. This is overlooked the Solent and was the perfect point to see the liners as they awaited their tugs to take them into Southampton. It was also one of the final years when there was a regular passenger service. All the classics were there, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, United States and France together with the Union Castle fleet. Incredible sights.

The Queen Mary beat Normandie by less than half a knot. Even with engines that had 60,000 more horsepower. The QM geared turbines were antiquated compared to Normandie's turbo electric drive. Normandie was the superior design in every way. That being said: Long Live The Queen!

@@brober All the opulence and posh style the Normandie had was seemingly for nothing. The only people who could enjoy the Normandie were the super rich, and even then the idea of having such a palace-like atmosphere was no longer appreciated in society. On board the Queen Mary, even 3rd class could enjoy their own beautiful interiors and there were more bathrooms onboard than any other liner, so you didn't have to share a bathroom with as many passengers. The Normandie might have fit well if the days of extreme classism had lasted through the 1930's but...it didn't.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, there's a lot of folks who say the Normandie was the most beautiful and luxurious ship ever built. I myself see no beauty in the Normandie, to me it looks unattractive inside and out, I can see why it never turned a profit, too ritzy and too cold.

Fans of the QM look down upon the ship's haunted reputation, and the reason is because it's not true. The Haunted aspect of the ship draws crowds during Halloween, but for the rest of the year thr ship is empty, and the reason why is because the general public doesn't want to stay on a haunted ship...its gimmicky and tacky. The only people who care are paranormal enthusiasts...but there aren't enough paranormal enthusiasts to keep the ship profitable year round.

Having stayed on her with my wife on one night of our honeymoon in 2016 -we spent three weeks driving around California in an open top mustang). I believe she is haunted, no ghosts in our cabin but on taking the tour my wife took photos at the swimming pool which is supposed to be haunted and in it you can see 3 people standing on the lower level who weren’t there in person. A year before my parents, both at the time skeptics of anything ghostly especially my mother had toured the ship and she felt really ill and uncomfortable down in the engine room, where another supposed ghost haunts. Believe or disbelieve if you wish. BTW we didn’t go there because it’s supposedly haunted, it was just somewhere iconic to visit on our tour. Sadly the hotel operation itself at that time was quite poor in fact, basic, little in the way of service or amenities, more like a travelodge and not befitting a luxury liner but I think that company and at least one other since have gone kaput to date.

My dad was one of many who went out to greet her, and years later still spoke with reverence and awe of the sight of her coming into port under her own power. She was the first liner I was aware of and was what made me fall in love with Ocean Liners, and her magic that enchanted me years ago has never left. I remember being thrilled to be aboard her and the memory of seeing one of her huge propellers still gives me goose bumps. I wanted to stand up and cheer when you said that both the QM & Big U should be saved. I couldn't agree more. They are priceless pieces of our history and must be saved. I don't follow. SS United States has been saved from turning into scrap by multiple investors, which is where almost all retired liners end up if not on the bottom of the ocean. The US has preserved several iconic historic buildings and properties all over the country. On top of that the US has preserved Queen Mary, London Bridge, and several Titanic artifacts across several museums (none of which even originate in the US). With the plethora of historic preservations in the US, one could argue we invest too much in history. Now if you're talking about learning from our history, that's a different story but also not an uncommon tragedy in the world. ;)

Normandie's life was like the the tragedy of a Greek Hero. She was unquestionably the most innovative, daring and modern of the great liners built in the interwar period. Queen Mary was certainly well built and a handsome ship but she was very much a traditionalist which was built and designed in a conservative manner. Normandie's life was tragically cut short after less than a decade of service first by the Second World War and then by the mismanagement and incompetency of the US Navy personnel responsible for converting her into a troop ship. Had she survived the war and returned to peace time service it is certainly conceivable that she could have turned a profit for her owners and possibly even squeezed that fraction of a knot of speed out of her engines and hull to retake the speed crown. As it was she went through at least 3 sets of propellers in efforts to improve issues with vibration and increase her speed. Who is to say that hydronamic research done during WW2 might not have given her a set that would have made her faster still after the war.

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian  Před 2 lety +1

You do have the perfect voice to be a narrator and combined with lots of interesting visuals and information.
I found your channel as a suggested video around three months ago and I have been very impressed by you and your very interesting videos ever since🙂
I have had the great pleasure of being able to visit the Queen Mary many times over the years since I was a teenager back in the mid 80's and I have had the chance to see the SS United States a few times in recent years when flying in from the north and landing in Philadelphia.
If you look out of the right side of the airplane as you are coming in for landing from the north into Philadelphia, you can easily see the SS United States in her dock.
I have seen a video a couple years ago on CZcams of the SS United States from a person who was some how given access to go on board and unfortunately the former pride of the United States is pretty well gutted, which is actually a pretty sad sight to see.
Thankfully so far that has never been the fate for the Queen Mary.
The SS United States would be interesting to see if she could ever be restored considering her history, but I can't even imagine how many millions of dollars that it would take to restore her, considering the very sad shape that she appears to be in, I'm not holding my breath to be able to ever see that happening.
Keep making your wonderful documentaries Alex, you definitely have the knack for it. I can definitely imagine you having a very successful future with your very interesting documentaries and not just on CZcams👍🙂

Lovely video for comparing these grand ships as they were in their prime. :) All the same, the bit at the end about preservation seemed to imply running them again. Having just seen a video on Rolling Mary's absolutely horrendous tendency to roll and pitch in rough seas, that was a scary thought! But, of course, I'm sure she'd only be taken out in fine weather, and we have vastly better weather monitoring and prediction facilities than when she was at her prime. As to how scary, once, the grand piano in one of the lounges broke free and smashed every piece of furniture in the room; there was nothing left. Worse, over the ship's operating life, 5 people were killed just trying to use the 3rd-class stairway.

Even if they could hire one, you're talking about a trip lasting a couple weeks at sea, costing tens of millions, with a high chance of damage due to rough weather. Not to mention, someone in the UK would have to be willing to purchase the ship from Long Beach for probably 200 million, and put 10 million a year into her care and upkeep. Even with the best care, she might only have another 45 years left in her.

(Because why would anyone hate or not care about a 1930s ocean liner. Seriously. It's not like they could watch something else instead.) I'm sure that's just an isolated group of people who shouldn't be taken seriously. Bright Sun Films says in the video that the Queen Mary is very beloved and shouldn't be scrapped. I've only found one person who falsely claims that the Queen Mary should be scrapped in India because it has no historical value and the ship is rotting. For some reason he claimed that the SS United States conservancy was a fake scam, etc, etc. I can try and post pictures if you're interested. However, I really don't see any real arguments going on regarding his video that are worth mentioning. I'd be interested to hear about the hate in Bright Sun Film's or any other Queen Mary video. You're absolutely right that video wasn't made to spread hatred at all. But there are people who just hate the ship. They say things like "its just a boat, toss it in the scrap pile" or "who gives a crap, its British, let them have it" or "worthless rusting hulk, chop it up". I even had to ban two people from my channel who were harassing my viewers simply because they liked the ship. Thankfully there's a lot more love out there than there is hate for the ship, but believe me this ship is a huge controversy and there are a lot of people out there who really don't give a crap about it.

To my eyes all three Normandie, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth are beautiful ships. Queen Mary is said to have achieved 32.84 knots on trials so that may be close to her maximum possible. She did later on get better propellers which improved overall efficiency and may also have improved top speed a little, maybe to 33 knots flat out. The nature of steam turbines is that you can overload them to produce more power, which will give more speed, if you have the steam available. Although Queen Elizabeth had the same turbines as the Queen Mary it is my understanding that the Queen Mary had more steam generating capacity therefore she was always going to be able to go a bit faster by flogging the turbines more. Both British ships had a conservative hull form and single reduction geared turbines whereas Normandy had a really efficient hull form and turbo electric drive consisting of steam turbines driving AC generators (i.e. alternators) which power large AC motors (synchronous type probably) that directly drive the propellers. A neat design that had been developed by the US Navy some years before. Normandie would be able to achieve any given speed to her maximum with less power than the British ships. She was sawn off, her story was not over when she was so tragically lost. She still had a lot to offer and would have given the Queen Mary a run for her money after the war. Queen Mary may have been just a fraction faster though, by virtue of brute power but thats not to say Queen Mary was a brute; she was not. She was a beautiful and elegant ship.

It was a mistake to send the SSUS to Ukraine to have its interiors stripped out. Although material containing asbestos is a health hazard, if the inside of the ship had remained intact, it wouldn't necessarily have been more dangerous for people today than it was over 50 years ago. The QM also has materials that contain asbestos, as other older structures do too. The SSUS could have been preserved as a tribute to the 1950s & as America's winner of the Blue Riband. However, it was less historic, interesting & attractive than the QM is. So even if the SSUS were in perfect condition (& whether in Philly or elsewhere) I don't know if it ever will be a strong enough tourist attraction.

I so wish the NORMANDIE had survived the war, to carry on their rivalry and remain one of the most beautiful, grandest ship ever built. As for these days, last I heard, the MARY was in sad shape and needed a lot of expensive work, and funding is hard to come by these days. S.S. UNITED STATES' situation is far worse; she's very dilapidated, would need MAJOR, MAJOR work even to be habitable, and has been laid up since 1969 - a total of 53 YEARS. I don't know of ANY ship that could remain unmaintained for 53 years and survive- she was built by William Francis Gibbs, so maybe she's in a unique position to avoid that fate, but I doubt it. The reality is it would cost millions, at MINIMUM, just to restore her to a state where the public could even be let on BOARD. I just don't see this happening. She has avoided the scrapyard a number of times by sheer good fortune, but I fear her luck may soon run out.
