My God, Joaquin phoenix has come a long way now to rule. Not that he acted Ok-ish in Gladiator but these are Stellar performances.

I'm not a fan of religions but I do like history. And good movies, meaning acting and cinematography. This is a film that won't be liked much by fans and critics but I would bet directors would enjoy it.

One thing that pops out at me is the same way Jesus loses His connection with God in His Agony, Mary loses Jesus.

Wow.... I've seen this movie many times already. I'm shocked it took this long to release in its home country the United States. I've watched it many times on Digital download already.
I liked it, but it takes many liberties with the Gospel text some of which are ok, others not so much. Phoenix is a welcome surprise as Jesus, he plays the role very layed back and quietly. The supporting cast is mostly olive-skin Jewish, which is actually very welcome because they WERE JEWS.
I think they could have made it better, but it is a very enjoyable Religious film. I think the movie should have included the suggestion of the "former prostitute" traditional redemption element, but it doesn't.
I give 4/5. The cinematography is beautiful.
Some issues with minor lack of faithfulness to the Gospels hold it back from being a great film.
A principle comes to mind. He that is faithful in the least of things will be faithful in much. This movie can't even get basic facts correct, how can it be trusted to provide an accurate account of anything else? John 4:2 'Jesus did no baptizing, his disciples did.'

John the Baptist did baptized as he paved the way for Jesus’s appearance, and later, the disciples baptized. At Acts, Paul said: “John baptized with the baptism in symbol of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” But as for Jesus doing any baptism
John 4:1-3 says “When the Lord became aware that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John- although Jesus himself did no baptizing but his disciples did- he left Ju·deʹa and departed again for Galʹi·lee”.
Mary Magdalene, who was once a prostitute, was a follower of Christ as was many others women from various walks of life. They were believers in Jesus. The Bible never associates her with any type of special relationship with Jesus and she is only mentioned in the Bible on certain occasions and those were often with Jesus mother, the other Mary, and other women who believed and who, in their faith, provided monetary support from their own funds. The Bible does, however, relates her utter faith in the message Jesus preached. Luke 8:1,2 says “Shortly afterward he traveled from city to city and from village to village, preaching and declaring the good news of the Kingdom of God. And the Twelve were with him, as were certain women who had been cured of wicked spirits and sicknesses: Mary who was called Magʹda·lene, from whom seven demons had come out, Jo·anʹna, the wife of Chuʹza, Herod’s man in charge; Su·sanʹna; and many other women, who were ministering to them from their belongings”. Ministering means taking care of essentials: food preparation, taking care of essentials needed for moving from one place to another.
I think Dan Brian’s work of fiction open up the suggestion that she was more to Jesus, implicating they had children and descendants, though what the purpose of that was, he never explains in his book. etc. Besides, records kept for millineums of the line of descendants for the Jews were destroyed in 70 CE by the Roman army so records that might have connected someone to Mary or Joseph, or one of Jesus’ half brothers or sisters, would have been destroyed. It seems many, who prefer to remain gullible, want to believe these mistruths, doesn’t think a movie is that good unless it contains sex, and don’t understand that since there is so little in the Bible about Mary M, that naturally, the movie industry will take several liberties and often flush out material for entertainment purposes, fill it with lots of hot steamy and suggestive looks and some allow themselves to be deliberately misled instead of doing research for the truth themselves. Hey, it sells and makes money for them.
with all due respect: but no one of you understands the underlying message here... is not about the act is about the real transformation you have in your spirit, baptizing is the "recognizing" of "the spirituality in you"... any way more than 2000 years and many of this concepts will remain misunderstood

I liked this film. I find my mind returning again and again to an interesting juxtaposition, intentional or not, that I pull from it.
Early on you get introduced to Mary as she acts in support of a mid-wife and a rough labor. The mother is struggling, panicking in the pain of what seemed her first birth. She thought she was dying.
Mary lays down full along side the birthing mother. She coaxes the woman into looking into her eyes; providing succor to her in that moment of birth. And so the new mother was calmed, and gained strength with the support of Mary.
Jesus, returning to Bethany, goes to the body of Lazarus' and lays full length alongside the dead man. After a time Lazarus' head turns and he looked Jesus full in the eyes. Coming back from the dead and into the calm stillness of Christ. In that moment I was struck by a certain commonality. Jesus and Mary were two sides of the same coin, and it was cleanly expressed in how they related to others.
Now I will grant that as a movie I'm sure some "poetic licensing" may have occurred to convey a certain impression; but truly Jesus and Mary seem to represent two aspects of God. Just as all men and women do today.
Just some thoughts worth about that much.

I have no interest in this film at all. I don't believe Phoenix will do well and I'm done with these retellings of stories... you have King Arthur, Robin Hood, Wyatt Earp, Count Dracula, Jesus.... etc. Hell, just give me the story once and do it well... then leave it.

If God condemned angels, in the days of Noah, for “ forsaking their natural state (changing their spiritual body for a human one) so they could lie with women, why would he approve of his only begotten son to do the very same thing with a woman?? What was the purpose of a ransom?? To “buy back” something with something of equal value. Adam sinned before having children. Therefore any potential children within him were sinners but through no fault of their own. They were born into it. To equalise it “buy back” , another PERFECT man, with the potential to have children, would have to die. That equalised everything and why Jesus is referred to as a “Repurchaser, Redeemer”. Getting involved with any woman, having a relationship of ANY kind with ANY woman by Jesus would have neutralised anything he came to do. THAT was what Satan wanted, so anyone making a movie promoting such a relationship is actually promoting the interests of Satan, not God. I don’t know if this movie does that, but from m the trailer, there seem to be a strong indication there is a leaning towards that way of thinking. In that case the movie is us as worthless as that fiasco movie “Noah” where sinful angels were stupid rocks.
