HI Curtis, I want to thank you for your sharing your passion with the imac 2011s! Upgrading and reworking tech should be a norm as opposed to prescribing to the "buy new" culture. I came across your channel as I wanted to give my imac 2011 a new lease of life. My system is a mid-2011 i5-2400S (20GB RAM) dual boot (MacOS/Win64) that I intend to update with an i7-2600s, K2100M and new SSD combo for my engineering study/work. I'm planning to do a fresh install of both OS environments. Do I need to go install opencore under MacOS (HS or Catalina) if my desired OS environment is Win64? Also do you know how the K2100M handles under Win64?

    • @victorfigueroa9385

It officially doesn't but its way better to use Propertree than OpenCore configurator as it still uses clover strings which can damage your OpenCore EFI.

    Hey ! :)
I never heard of Catalina Loader. It is based on Opencore IIUC?
What is the advantage of this compared to the patch from Dosdude1?
IIUC they both serve the purpose of running Catalina on unsupported macs, right?
Or does Catalina Loader go beyond that?

hi Curtis - 1st, thanks for all of your videos and instructions on the vbios update and this video in particular. Quick question though - Do you still prefer to put the opencore / catalina loader partition on a bootable USB drive or create a small partition on an SSD to house that info? I am not sure how I feel about a boot loader on a usb stick as a permanent solution. Thoughts?

    • @messing-with-computers

@@messing-with-computers I am completely stuck and this whole process is making me feel stupid, even though i have been in IT for the last 20 years, albeit Linux and Windows mostly. I cannot get a boot disk working off of the OpenCore download and I have tried on several USB and SD disks. WTH am I doing wrong? Used Super Duper and Balena Etcher ... It writes the disk but I cannot get it selectable as an option in Startup Disk for by holding down Alt. Maybe it is something simple but after a lot of reading, I keep coming up short. Any help would be appreciated.

I got it to work ... 1 Important thing to note before you start using disk utility, super duper, bolena etcher, etc ... Make sure whatever drive it is is GUID on these devices. I think mine was MBR. Now onto the next set of problems on my 2010 ... Got everything up and running with Catalina. Applied Patches after the fact. Getting really weird behavior. No metal support it looks like. Contents of windows become clear when dragging on screen. I am really bummed that I cannot get this to work.

Hi Curtis... First.. Amazing videos, clearly explained without repetion of what to do. Great work. Chris.... Could I ask you something? I have a Mid 2011 iMac 12.2, I work with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop CC 2020 versions, they are really slow at original spec.So..... I have just ordered a CPU 2600 (non-S) and I have added RAM to 24Gb... I plan to install another 2 x 8GB soon. Regarding a straight swap, easy to install and use, Catalina proof and future updates, Which Max Power GPU would you recommend? There are so many different types and codes, I'm totally confused man. 2Gb or 4Gb... price max $200 to make the iMac last another couple of years... I also have an Atheron Wifi card.. no-continuity, which Broadcom BT4.0 Airport card would be a straight swap? Sorry so many questions, but I trust you. Thanks so much in advance for "any" help. Keep up the good work.

Hey rob - I’m researching the WiFi replacement now - It seems to require some hacking of wires and soldering, so it might be a little bit. As for the gpu - 21.5 stay on the k2100m max. For the 27 go for the k4100m max.

It’s a common problem which makes the displays dull, murky, cloudy grey.
Apparently you can remove the LCD panel split the screen and clean with a microfibre cloth. Just a thought. I would value your tutorial in this than anyone else. Have a great weekend mate

In relation to the below topic with respect to Win64 have you come across a method to install Windows10 via a usb thumb drive from the boot menu? My past experience was that MacOS bootmenu would not permit an install via USB and I had to use the DVD. I would really like to know if you, or anyone else has discovered a workaround.

    • @messing-with-computers

The standard bootpicker does show, but the brightness patch for the flashed videocards is still needed from opencore on boot. Except for the k4100m, which has a new vBios out that includes brightness controls (this might be the future for all the kepler cards?)
