Windows has been making it more difficult to boot with windows without a key. For Windows 11, they removed the "skip" and "I don't have internet" options while starting up, essentially forcing you to enter a key. There's actually a task manager workaround for that, but it baffles my mind!

I had that problem in the 80's & 90's. While building a lot of systems and swapping boards, drives and memory in and out of my personal tower. Back then it wasn't a watermark. It was more intrusive. And I forget which version it was but it was a big window popup that kept coming back.
It was like this on the older versions of windows. If I remember correctly, a fullscreen popup would appear every four hours reminding you to activate a license and after a couple of days it was every hour. There were more than those popups but I don't remember them now.

I've actually seen that Windows prompt after migrating drives between computers and it works so much better and more painlessly than the old way.

XP and Vista were quite unforgiving, 7 was middle ground, but for windows 8 onwards to 10 is definitely more forgiving in hardware changes, especially when you used your legit key to install. I have been going forward with my 8.0 key -> 8.1 -> (gfx/hdd->ssd swap) -> 10 -> (gfx swap) -> link to account -> mb swap -> (various ssd->m.2 swaps) -> today :)

@@lunotechan7342 It will, it just won't necessarily do it right away. You can swap out the motherboard and it'll look fine for a day, but once Windows goes through and does its verification magic at some point it'll recognize the swap and require activation again (usually within a day or so).

I remember I had to call windows before to reactivate my windows because I upgraded my video card around 6 or 7 years ago. I live in Asia, calling a US number is expensive and timing when to call was frustrating. I understand the part where you don't have to buy a key for every test benches build, you're not really the parts for actual day-to-day.
I also live in asia and they charge SO MUCH for international calls by the MINUTE, and especially on tech support calls like these, that call can last up to HALF an hour
Funny thing is, you call a US callcenter-number from Asia and land in a callcenter in Asia. Still have to pay like an idiot toast
Fun story: in a Facebook group I’m in, a guy asked where to buy an OEM Windows key. Someone replied with a picture of a sticker with a key for Windows 7 (which is upgradable to windows 10) and said “here, in case anyone needs it”
And that’s how I got a windows 10 license for free
So yeah, if you’re lucky you can just ask around and maybe someone nice enough will have an OEM key from a laptop or something that they don’t need

This has happened to me twice. Once when I upgraded my CPU (Full System Upgrade) & second time when I downgraded my GPU . I eventually gave up on buying windows after that
I have used the migrate license feature, which is especially useful considering how many old Windows 7 laptops I have. If I need a license, I upgrade to Windows 10 and migrate the license to another machine. This is also very useful when you buy a new computer
I just say fuck it and deal with the activate windows watermark, already have for 7 years and I see no reason to change for $200

I've never paid for Windows in my entire life. I had a Commodore Amiga up until 1999 and my first PC had a pirated copy of Windows 98 installed. I've pirated every other version I've used since then too.

At the sound recording studio I work at, we've used the same C:Drive with the same Windows 10 Pro license since Win10Pro was new and a 1TB NVMe was still considered "massive storage". We've swapped CPUs, GPUs, added/removed/upgraded/changed RAM, and even motherboards plenty of times each.
What this boils down to is Windows is trying to solve Theseus's ship and Linus is paying for their answer

To be fair I've done the same, I fried my motherboard about 2 years ago, when I switched it, I had the same activation issue and refuse to pay for another license, so have kept it with the activate windows prompt since then.

A retail version (not the white OEM envelope) have a activation code that can be migrated to one machine (tied to the motherboard) instead of being tied to a particular motherboard (e.g. OEM keys are non-transferrable despite saying it's linked to your MS account)
I had a retail version activated on my pocket pc which I ditched, but I am able to use the troubleshooter and migrate my license to a thinkpad.
However, as said, there might be a finite number of times you can migrate the license, and I don't see a reason running a non-activated windows (to test components with a specific motherboard) is a issue.
Just make sure your own PC motherboard is tied to a activated code. OEM or retail.
This is the only correct take, the red sticker on the envelope is a dead giveaway. The reason he's having problems is because those are system builder keys, they *must* be preinstalled on a PC that is resold, and they're tied to the motherboard. Moving it to a new motherboard, or using it for purposes other than preinstallation, is actually a violation of the license.
On the contrary the licensee of a retail key can use it on any PC as long as one instance of it is running at a time; and they have a virtually infinite amount of reactivations. (As long as you don't get the key blacklisted w/ a suspicious pattern of activations.) His use-case is perfectly supported, in a number of ways actually, he just bought the wrong license. What MSFT probably *wants* him to do is sign a volume agreement so they can audit him at will ;-). He could also pay a few grand a year on MSDN subscriptions - then his employees can use any supported version of Windows on whatever hardware they want for development/testing purposes.
Long time since this comment was posted, but my own experience from a few weeks ago prompted me to write an answer: I've built my PC over a year ago and used an unused Win 8 retail licence I had lying around to activate win 10. Worked like a charm, licence was linked to my account. No problem, right? Wrong. Turns out that each time I upgraded my mainboard BIOS Windows internally perceived that as a hardware change. (I don't know why it happened, but if you have a Gigabyte mainboard you better watch out.) And the last BIOS update just straight up deactivated Windows. I couldn't reactivate it, Windows and the microsoft support site said the key wasn't valid for any more activations. So there was a retail key from a boxed windows version I legitimally bought and MS basically told me to go f myself just because of some BIOS updates.
Linus, Windows 10 is stored inside either the liquid cooling for your PC or thermal past (but in rare cases it is stored in screws).

It's not pirating if you're officially downloading the ISO from their website which is free, and installing it, and having an option to not install a product key and still works as fine, just with a watermark and locked wallpaper options.
I know this is a bit of an old comment but you can actually change your wallpaper on a locked os by going into the registry and swapping out the default background with whatever image you want. Only caveat is you have to restart your pc for it to take effect.
I have a question about your test rig. You plug your windows ssd in and fire it up, on other videos do benchmarks.
Isn't a clean install necessary any more or is windows getting more like Linux and uses the hardware detected at each boot.

I wonder if they have ever considered going with a Retail Version of windows, which allows you to move your license from one pc to another, yes you would have to deactivate the license on the computer it is being used on prior, but it works.
That's actually how it normally works with windows. Just ya know. Like most things. It may or may not work. Personally I've missed several crippling updates because windows can no longer be updated without wiping my drive. For some reason.
I remember that when Microsoft presented the activation in windows xp, this was a combination of the motherboard, the processor and the network card, I don't know if it is still like that.

I recent faced this issue, due to swapping my NVME multiple times and also changing the mobo, it doesn't instantly deactivate, it takes sometimes hours, sometimes days!

I have done 4 complete rebuilds since I bought my win 8 pro key on sale for 35$ from windows. I have never bought another license, it always lets me enter my old license and never has been deactivated.

Everyone knows license key is tied to thermal paste. putting in fresh thermal paste resets your windows key. You are suppose to scrap those thermal paste up and put it back on the new processor or ram or psu when you migrate your pc.

hahah this was my problem for like 3 years of swapping out parts all the time. Ended up just leaving it - but recently Windows has a way better activation platform - apparently I have three licences that I have purchased over the years, two of which we're active - so all I had to do was reassign the liscence and then upgrade to Win 11 was also then available.
MSFT has really done a lot of good work post 2020

The only thing you miss with not activating Windows is Security updates, I think?
It may disappear for a bit but your features will still be deactivated

I've always had custom-built ordered PCs, and every time the license was stored on the motherboard itself. Every time I upgraded memory i.e. swap out HDD for SSD, I would download and install windows fresh but wouldn't be prompted to activate windows as it's activated on the MB.
As a person in IT industry for the last 23 years, I already knew where he was going with this. We have open volume license for our schools. He should of shown virtual as well...

Closer to fact than people think. I upgraded my data drive...DEACTIVATED. I changed my Primary SSD...DEACTIVATED. Both times had to call. Both times I had to jump through hoops. They "claimed" that I had a new computer. No...I had a new data drive the first time, and 6 months later I updated the SSDs when I re-installed Windows.
I'm dreading my memory increase because my neighbor got "DEACTIVATED" when he went from 16Gb to 32Gb in his machine...

Not all those licenses are used though, some people already have plenty of licenses or run different software. So it's more the opposite; how rich would they be without the wintel cartel construction?

I find the activate windows prompt funny. I only have an activated version of windows by pure chance, otherwise I just deal with the watermark, and nothing ever happens because of it. It's kind of like WinRAR OS edition
