A Drill bit for 25 cents? I do so enjoy the work you do. I challenge you on the 25 cents drill bit though! No offense but this retired State Licensed General Contractor calls B.S.
OREGON!!!!
This is supremely useful. I wish more craft/DIY channels would lay out exactly what you need before starting a new hobby. Sewing youtube is always surprising me with the tools I apparently don't have.
“Before I buy a bunch of crappy tools I am going to head over to Harbor Freight...”
Only time I have ever heard that!
LOL, I thought the same thing.
Before I buy a bunch of crappy tools I'm going to go to harbor freight and buy some slightly more expensive crappy tools.
Then you haven't bought from then in the last year. Power tools are now comparable to any of the rainbow color brands. And my $68 12 ton press, the same exact name, is twice the price on Amazon. And shipping was $4.99.
@@nothankyou5524 agreed, been using my crappy HF 19.99 saws-all for a year now, at that point if i had to buy a new one every 6 months it is still better than the big names, i use it for plumbing so it gets more than its share of work
When I started I used my gas stove to aneal it
Thank you for actually showing how to make rings with basic tools. It was nice to see the sizing tools also.
Seems to me, that starting with a smaller hole, would give you a smaller ring size. It also seems to me that one could get an idea of the general final ring size, by the size of the drill bit. Then, you wouldn't have to drop $100+ on resizing equipment. (And, if you can afford the resizing stuff... you can probably afford a torch).
Also... a ring mandrel thingy... that's not a typical yardsale find.
Small criticisms aside, this was an informative video, with useful information. So, thank you. Your efforts are appreciated.
Any idea of where can I find a good quality one? I bought a cheap one online and the f-ing thing literally broke when I started hammering.
@@mariop6776 Amazon brother ! I got one for 20$ in a ring sizing kit. Been beating it up with a plastic mallet and it’s fine.
Center is easy to find with a straightedge and a thin Sharpie, and easy to mark for drilling by using a prick punch. Prick punch, use ~ 1/8" bit (cobalt alloy lasts longer, I buy five-packs online for pilot holes) for starter hole since the center of a bit cuts by crushing then finish with your desired drill bit.
Thanks for doing this video! I really appreciate you starting from scratch, going to the store, buying stuff and starting from scratch- this is one of the most useful videos I’ve seen - great job!
Thanks!
Great video. I'm retired, so I'm only working Two jobs over seven days a week, and now, when I'm just burned out from what will be my last car restoration, because of you, I'm doing this, and it's great. Thank you.
Right on!
Thanks Skyler, this video came at the perfect time. I want to try ring making but not spend a lot if I don’t think this is for me.
Quick tip for you on drilling a center hole that is actually centered: after you punch the center of the coin, drill a through-hole using a 1/8” drill bit then a 1/4” drill bit then your final drill bit. By stepping the sizes up, the hole will stay centered. I personally use the short, double ended 1/8” drill bits (available at Harbor Freight) to prevent any flexing of the thin shaft of traditional-length 1/8” drill bits.
Superb video, thank you for giving us a foundation which most can build from, I've been wanting to make coun rings for years and this was perfect.
I know other tutorial videos out there can intimidate viewers due to how much equipment is required to already have on hand, yet this is encouraging to know there are ways to be creative without breaking the bank.
Right on thanks!
I appreciate the work it takes for these videos. Great job man
Another helpful video Skyler this will definitely help someone starting up making coin rings 👌
I really enjoy the hammering and music being synchronized 👍🏼
As an addition to what someone said about gas station jet lighters, you can get butane torches meant for creme brulee or cannabis concentrates for between $15-$30 that'll get the job done annealing a coin.
I didnt realize those would go for that much. 3 rings and your basic tools are paid for. I appreciate your hustle! I'm just over in Oak Grove, got friends in Amity. Beautiful area.
Thanks for sharing! It’s a really useful method to start making coin rings.
Use a center drill prior to drilling to final diameter. Will reduce deflection
Great work as always. I get many complements on my coin ring i bought from you. Its a great item to talk about.
Right on thanks!
$1 mandrels are everywhere, lol. I've used different drifts, spuds, bull prix, etc. They usually ding scuff and scrape extra character into my poorly unsized rings, they'd be impossible to sell and not because they're priceless like you may think. Thanks and Good work!
Thanks...great info. Thanks for passing it on.
Great information! Thank you!
Have a better day!
Ingenuity at its best, thanks for the video!✌🏿
Very cool video, I do mostly woodworking but this would be a fun project to try too
Really appreciate this kind of info. This is something my Fiance and I have been thinking about for a bit now. Honestly, we look forward to any of your videos.
very cool!
Wow, thank you so much for sharing this info. AWESOME.
Have you ever use the pvc pipe or a piece of copper pipe to hit the coin in the mandrel to make it bigger?
VERY helpful :D thank you so much for sharing this :) 💜
Another great vedio thanks for your help I made my second ring it turned out pretty good.
That's great news!
I like the Dino Jr background music!
This is a great video. Best channel in this genre!!
It was funny to see that you shopped at all my stores. Same town.
Awesome video! very easy to follow
I have used a bike handlebar clamp to expand rings .
Love it thanks for the information 🤗💜💜
Love to watch the process. Can you post where I can find the items to buy please? Ty
is it possible to just go to hammer down to a smaller size from the beginning? For example, make the first side on the mandrell till 5' and then keep going on the other side to the size you want?
Love this!
Made my first ring very similar to this method👍
Cool!
I’ve been getting into knife making, so glad I’ve found the world of rings!
Have you found a way make a budget none powered grinder ?
@@summon1456 depends on the steel you’re using for your knife but you can use a file to achieve an edge.
I love the music you used ^^
I didn't
Fantastic video. I’ll be following your process to make a silver ring for my girlfriend.
nice information. thanks for sharing.
Been watching a few uploads brother, too awesome and so very effective so I had to support your channel and subscribe, would definitely like to score some merchandise from you and share with little old new zealand.
Kind regards Scotti
Great video. Do you have a video showing how to start making rings? Not necessarily the cheap way but with the press and everything else? What tools to buy? Links? And cost? Thanks for the help
Check out my forged book 2 video..
Good video, great humor, great info.
Awesome video! If you wanted to go bigger with the ring size, say a size 14 or 15, would you just use a bigger coin or could you continue to go up in size with a quarter? Do you need different dies or could you use those same ones in the kit?
You would move up to a half dollar or dollar to accommodate larger ring sizes like that. There are larger dies at www.jasons.works that will work for those.
Thanks for the great video🙏Does a delrine resin cone work the same as a stainless steel cone?
The delrin would be damaged after the first use. It us a really poor material unfortunately.
@@CoinRingsfromTheMint ok thank you👍
This is a great video and got me interested in makes coin rings. My first attempt and quarter would not fit on mandrel. What size drill bit did you use?
I use 1/2” for most rings
Thanks for these videos. Is it safe to assume the resizing kit can be used with a press rather than hammering? It looks like this 'kit' might replace the immediate need for a ring stretcher-resizer and, be easier when used with an arbor press.
Most definitely yes!
@@CoinRingsfromTheMint Thank you, sir.
Love this
In Ireland we just pop a €2 coin in a vice in woodwork and tighten it until the silver middle bit pops out. Your left with a cool golden ring, then we use a file to smooth it out
This is fantastic, thanks so much for this info! :D
You're welcome!
Love the coin ring
great video! very informative, the music was awesome, and love how accessible you make this
Is there any way to make the rings smaller besides spending $100? I only plan to make one ring and need it to be a size 6. Is there any way of making a bigger or smaller ring during the making process? Drilling a smaller hole maybe?
Great video as usual!👍 I followed your first basic tools video and have upgraded little by little... Kinda hard to get new stuff I'm only 15 so hard to get money lol
Right on!
Great info.!
Great video and greetings from Wisconsin. Where can I buy the set of dies ?
Awesome video bro hope all is well and the family is doing well.
Love all your videos. Very descriptive.. very helpful! Thanks for it all. I have gotten tons of good ideas from you!
I will prob never make a coin 💍 but you never know right? In any case, I just love you and ur videos. Keep up the great work my friend!
Thanks!
Have you tried a smaller pilot hole?
Gostei . tem como eu importa estas ferramentas do seu país.
How hot do you Heat the Coins and cool them?
Awesome!!
Thanks
can i use a Spud wrench instead of a mandrel?
Possibly. Give it s shot and see what happens.
What size is the dill bit? What size would be ideal?
Congrats!!!!!!! Awesome dudeson!!!
If you can't center, start with a smaller drill bit like 2 mm and size up. Or use a subland twist drill. Was that a Quarter Dollar? I am from Germany so I am not so familiar with the US coins.
How many others are watching this with all the usual tools and power tools and know how, but no ring making dies and mandrels 🤣🤣
where do you get the coins from?
Hey..I was looking and I dont see the sale price for the items on Jason works site.
I have a link in my description now.
"Before I buy a bunch of crappy tools, I am going to go to harbor freight."
lol!
Was perusing a MIG welding message board where it was apparently customary to list the welders and other tools you had in your possession at the bottom of your comments. One of the commenters was fairly new to the whole thing, had a couple of his machines listed, and then "Assorted Chinese Tools of Unknown Dynasties" at the bottom of his list. I don't believe I have ever laughed so hard in my life!!! I have quite a collection of those myself!!
What size drill bit do I need ?
is it possible to anneal the rings on a gas stove maybe? just put it in the flame for a bit till it turns red?
Sure that should work fine.
Nice idea
A great video!
how much should I ask for a quarter ring like the one you just made? I'm new into coin ring making, I already have an arbor press, some dies, dappling block, mandrel,Harbor freight center punch set. I already made a few nice rings from quarters and presidential dollars I don't want to try to make rings from a silver coin yet I want to practice on clad coins.
Anything from $10 to $45. I charge $45 for mine but they are made with a bit more refinement
@@CoinRingsfromTheMint today I made really nice ring form a state quarter, it came looking pretty good I will probably sell it for about 25 dollars and save that money to buy more tools.by watching your videos I'm hook into coin ring making. thank you!!
You can buy a jet type lighter at the gas station for all of 1.99 that'll do a bang-up decent job of heating something as small as a coin.
Love your stuff. Were is your favorite place to set up and sale? Do you ever make rings in sale site !s a croud drawer?
I don’t set up anymore. Saturday markets were my best when I did though
Can you make a size 13 or 14?
I can't seem to find the link to the sale set you mentioned from Jason.
It might be over now. Check out his website www.jasons.works
How many times did you hammer your finger?
That was the most interesting vice I've ever seen.
wonderful!!!!!!!!
How do you stop your finger going green fromth brass in the coin
You use a silver coin. That’s is all you can really do that will work.
Hey, is your mandrel steel or aluminum alloy? Just got an aluminum one and am worried about destroying it
All mine are steel. Aluminum will get damaged for sure.
@@CoinRingsfromTheMint That's what I thought. Thank you for your prompt reply and your valuable instruction! Your videos are incredible. Cheers!
Great job 🤪👌
Okay, I love this video!
Problem: what are the odds that I'm going to find a ring mandrel at a yard sale? I go to a lot, and I would have totally gotten one.
Good thing: I do have a lot of tools.
Questions: How long did it take to saw through the coupler?
How, much can I sell the rings for, inorder to make my money back if I get your friends score?
Would one of those little torch lighters that the bad kids use to smoke with work to heat it up enough?
Thanks for your time ♥
Hi. I remember u from our friend Mr Crafsman lol.. I got my very first mandrel by askin my local jewlers if he had an old one an he gave me one.. Wasn't very good but they ain't super expensive really.. Now years later I'm Makin rings full time😊 good to see u again
Ps gas stove works fine for annealing at first.. But this lighters the bad kids use can also work. Or ones for Makin cream brulle works even better😉
Thanks@@Ken_Dalton ! That's an awesome idea, I did check eBay and they weren't that much, but I like your idea better. I'm so proud of you, doing what you love full time! I actually made a pendant today, I've had this block or something, I feel it coming back. I do have a torch, I was just wondering, lol. Great tips tho. Great running into you again, gotta love the Crafsman. I'll check and see if I'm subscribed, if not I will ♥
Great video man. It turned out awesome and that Oregon hat is totally you man.....lol. 😁👍
lol thanks!
What size was the drill bit? I have a 31/64 in (12.3 mm) bit, is that too big?
That should be fine
Great video mate
My first drill I ever had was just like that poop brown one from Goodwill hahaha
You could heat up the ring using the flame on a gas cooker to anneal it.
What do you sell the coin rings for?
Check out my website www.changeyoucanwear.net.
what a fekkin pain to fuss with!; well it does look cool afterwards
Hi I m from Italy and here I can't find the mandrel for this coin ring how can I get it?
You can order one on Amazon
