  • A BBC radio programme exploring the pianism of Ernst von Dohnányi that was produced by Alan Walker and first broadcast on July 27, 1966. In this insightful programme, Walker presents interviews with many musicians who knew, heard, and studied with Dohnányi: Louis Kentner, Antal Doráti, Sir Adrian Boult, Ilona Kábos, Béla Siki, Joseph Weingarten, Sir Georg Solti, and Bálint Vázsonyi. With illustrated musical examples and spoken testimonials, Walker provides fascinating details about Dohnányi's prodigious approach to piano playing and interpretation. Many thanks to Barbara Vázsonyi for providing photographs of her late husband Bálint Vázsonyi and to Norma Fisher for the photographs of Ilona Kábos.

Thank you for this wonderful post. I have been an admirer of Dohnanyi since I 1st heard his Suite in f# minor with the los Angeles Philharmonic back in 1952.

Magnificent lecture! What a glorious performance of the Schubert G-Major that it ended with too. (BTW, the very recently deceased Béla Siki had also been a pupil of Lipatti-what a pianistic pedigree!)

Fascinating! So interesting to hear this program from 1966. Dr. Walker has not changed a bit. Listening to this takes me right back to his lectures at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

Priceless documentary Mr. Walker! Could you please upload the one where you interview Liszt simulating his answers? This is so precious! I can't retrieve it ...

Dr Walker, I am a graduate from Ohio University in Athens Ohio. My late piano professor Dr. Eugene Jennings was a pupil of Dohnanyi. Unfortunately at that time I didn't have the presence of mind to ask him any reminiscences. This was back in the 1990s. However I had made at that time CD copies from Reel to reel tapes, of concerts that Dohnanyi either conducted or played (piano) in his capacity as composer in residence at Ohio University. Apparently he was a frequent visitor and performed quite a bit. If this is of any interest to you, I'd be happy to be contacted. Thank you.

I hope and trust that Dr. Walker answered.
In the event that he was to not, I'll thank
you in his stead for your information and
      most kind offer.
(Incidentally, very many operators of chan-
nels here display a shocking disregard for
their viewers' nice compliments and remarks.
I've no idea other than egoism or amassed
self preoccupation as indulged, that might
      account for such obvious defect.)
