"When composers and conductors play the piano, their great advantage over mere pianists is that they convey a grand vision of the work, unblurred by petty details and pianistic worries. This approach however tends to lack the true commitment of the pianist, making the performance too approximate. Dohnányi combined the virtues of both approaches and it was this that made his playing so unparalelled. Also, while having the most superb theoretical knowledge of music surpassed by none, and using the same to build up a performance perfectly designed in structure he was able to appear to his listeners as the incarnation of spontaneity."
Bálint Vázsonyi, last pupil of Ernő Dohnányi
