    Glad to see the review. A couple comments; 1. Read the manual. You cannot tow or even exceed 55mph in the two off road modes. 2. You did not level your trailer OR check the tongue weight!
    I have that EXACT SETUP on 2020 Limited with the same Atec trailer. The truck tires are rated for the full load capacity and the sway was from your trailer loading, not the tires. I agree 100% on the gearing. I have a 2021 Limited coming this week and I did order the 3.92 rear diff. My 2020 with the trailer loaded with my corvette race car and gear is 8,500 pounds and St Louis to Circuit of the America’s in Texas averages 8.6mpg at 70mph.
    Great to see you do a trailer/haul review! Well done.

I have been a long time Ford Owner but when I tested the new 2020 F150, I was not impressed and when I tested this Rebel and you compare the interior of these two trucks, there is a hands down winner and it's not a Ford. Air suspension is generally not a good setup for environments that get cold. However, there are some upgrades that can be done to the system to make it much more durable in cold weather. But again, cold air is like kryptonite to an air suspension, especially stock, just as heat is to leather-wrapped dashboards. They do wear out though just like normal coil over shocks / struts do and need replacing at some point. 80k to 130k would be a long life for an air suspension. They wear out sooner than normal shocks and are so expensive to repair with OEM parts. Aftermarket parts aren’t too bad, though. But the sway issue - you can upgrade the sway bar to a thicker bar that will help a ton.

    I have the same truck and tow a 7,000 lb enclosed trailer nearly every weekend and the truck does just fine. The sway you're getting most likely has to do with the ratio of trailer length to tow vehicle wheelbase.

  • @gerrymatheson4020
    @gerrymatheson4020 Před 5 měsíci

    If you're too light on the tongue/not enough tongue weight your trailer is gonna start to sway or sashay as you get up over 45 or 55. You've got no load in the trailer at all so your tongue weight is pretty minimal.
    I learned this back in '98 when we took a trip across the US. I had a 5x8 Haulmark trailer packed tight and loaded pretty heavy. I knew that you want to always have a bit more of your weight forward onto the tongue so I kept this in mind as I loaded it... but apparently over did that a bit. I was pretty heavy on my minivan's tail and had to be careful pulling in or out of parking lots or driveways. It towed nice tho. We went from Washington to South Dakota. We spent about 3 months in SD then reloaded to head to northern Indiana. This time when I loaded the trailer I tried to get a better balance trying to lighten the tongue weight a bit. I ended up over compensating. Didn't realize it til we hit the highway. It towed fine up to about 45 mph. As I approached 55 that trailer started to sway from side to side, increasing in severity. I carefully eased off and slowed down. Once below 45 it towed fine again. I tried gradually speeding up again but as I approached 55 again it started to sashay. I was not thrilled with the idea of doing this trip at 45 mph all the way to Indiana. I quickly decided a repacking of the trailer was a must. Pulled into the next rest area, pulled everything out and started over. This time I got it just right... not dragging the back end but not unstable either. It towed so much better. 65 - 75 with no problem. Felt solid and stable... If you have to error one way or the other go with a bit heavy on the tongue rather than light on the tongue/heavy on the rear of trailer.

Been all through the mountains of Pennsylvania and western Md ( little Orleans campground) and absolutely confident in towing.... think your issue with this set up your in today it there's no weight in that trailer and it a whole lot of real estate for the wind to push it around and with no weight its not as stable. Anyways. Love your videos my man. Maybe one day I'll catch up with ya at a campground and you can review my beast lol.

    A couple of things if you're going to test trucks. Set up your trailer the exact same way each time on how you put the weight inside (exact location, exact weight, etc.), when you are measuring the wheel well, mark with a grease pencil where you originally place your tape measure. Also, only test trucks towing with towing packages. Towing trucks without towing packages is not a good comparison. Like this truck and the F150, they are really not a half ton tow truck and you are comparing them with other trucks that do have tow packages. You should re-do your test on this RAM, get another air suspension truck with 3.92 gears and stock tires. The Goodyear 22" tires on those wheels actually do a good tow performance. But those hoodlum tires you show on those wheels are not right. You should also re-do your test on the F150 but make sure it has tow package. I'm only offering this information because I love your videos and you have something special going here. So I think it's good that you are hearing from the customers watching. You only have a few little adjustments and, man, you're right there with TFL.

    The 2019 RAM 4x4 comes standard with a 3.55 and has options of getting a 3.92. Mine is a Laramie 4x4 with Wildpeak tires and I have no problems at all when it comes to snow! Gas mileage is the only thing that I can see, but fun to drive with all that power (5.7 hemi)! I have coil springs with air overloads on a 4 inch lift.
    From seeing a lot of CZcams videos, aluminum heads freeze/thaw difference between the heads and cast iron manifolds can break studs and I have often thought about going with some really good sport tuned shorty stainless steel headers to resolve anything like this happening in the future and only adds more horse power regardless!... For long haul towing I would add an intercooler for the transmission to reduce the heat and wear. One of the most odd things that I found out is that the automatic transmission doesn't have any dipstick at all and a mechanic checks the fluid level by pulling the plug and seeing if any fluid drips out (telling him that it is full). I guess they expect us to rely on the idiot light when the fluid gets low!

    I have the 2014 1500 Limited, and I tow my enclosed 7x16 trailer all the time. I do have 20” wheels and I don’t usually have the issue of swaying. My only complaint is that Ram has a known issue with the older air suspension, I think the changed it in 2015 or 2016, where my air suspension fails when it gets below 30 degrees and has issues raising and lowering. I try not to use in the winter. I have heard of others having it drop into entry mode and then not being able to raise it. Very expensive fix, and they didn’t do a recall on it. Another comment is that Off Road 2 is only good to about 10 mph, and Off Road 1 up to 45 or 50, then it drops to Normal. I only have the “Aero” mode if I’m driving at 55 mph or more consistently for I think more than a mile. If you slow to under that or stop, it goes back to normal.
    One last comment, if I’m towing, my truck never goes to 8th gear. Usually stays in 6. My trailer is smaller, so I usually get around 10-11mpg when towing. Great review!

  • @gwwj
    @gwwj Před 2 lety

    I kind of raced through the comments, and didn't see any mention of the air pressure in the truck tires. I've been towing and hauling with half ton trucks, including my own Ram 1500, for decades. I've done it with LT tires, and P rated tires, and XL rated tires. Usually if you air the tires to near their max, especially for P rated and XL rated, they are much more stable. I've been towing for the last 10 years on P rated tires with no sway. Agree with the comments that you should also be using sway control with a trailer that big.

My trailer hitch is set up so the ball easily aligns with the trailer. Yes I use a WD hitch. I’m thinking this might be the ticket if it fits my budget. Has the etorque as well, 5.7 Hemi. Love to know urs or anyone’s thoughts on it. I love my Ford but u just can’t beat the interior of the Rams. But I have a question tho. Should you have been in the off-road mode with the bags? Couldn’t that make it sway more cause the air getting up under it more, cause you were at ur highest setting. When towing close to your capacity it’s always a great idea to use a weight distribution hitch, preferably one that has sway control built in like mine. I would use the dump the bags when hooking the ball only up, put the bags in normal mode, then raise the trailer jack up as high as it could go, put the weight distribution bars on then lower the trailer back down to get the proper distribution weight. More than likely then u wouldn’t have any sway problems.

    You made a couple of mistakes in this one. The main thing is that you were supposed to deactivate the Air Suspension and turn it to jack mode. You are supposed to do this when changing a tire and when connecting a trailer, This is because you put it in off road mode and then load the trailer you are working against the weight. This is what you do when working a WDH. Secondly, you didn’t have a WDH which therefore gaurentees sway. I’m curious to know what was the payload on your model however.

    Nice video. Tires probably didn’t help the matter but the real issue is just the size of the trailer compared to the truck. It’s clearly not the weight which we already knew but the length and type of trailer (8.5’ enclosed) that really hurts the 1/2 tons.
    Of course the 1/2 ton Chevy’s with their factory tires pulled the trailer at full weight with no sway, just sayin 🤣.

      @matthewanderson9912 Před 3 lety

      I do like that you took the car out of the trailer though. That will show people that it’s not necessarily the weight that matters (to a point) but the size and type of trailer you are towing. This is especially true for 1/2 tons.
      A nice open trailer would be a good addition to your fleet when the timing is right for you. That would give a nice basis for your half ton and SUV reviews. Could even throw in some mid sizes to boot.

    • @matthewanderson9912
      @matthewanderson9912 Před 3 lety

      Yeah those types of trailers are better suited for half tons and SUVs. Or even a smaller enclosed like one that is I think 6.5’ wide or maybe they are 7’ wide but either way the type of enclosed trailers made for four wheelers and motorcycles are easier to pull for half tons too. But an open trailer with your car on it would be perfectly suited for half tons. Still be around 6000-6500 pounds but wouldn’t be a huge box behind you.
      I had mentioned taking the car out because I know my trailer pulled my half ton down basically the same loaded or empty. I mean on steep hills I could tell a difference if it was loaded or not but just driving on normal roads at normal speeds there was no difference. And BTW lack of tongue weight is not the problem. If anything excessive tongue weight is but mainly it’s the general size of your trailer. 8.5 wide is wider than a travel trailer and then 28’ long. It’s a big whip behind those half tons.

    The test that I would like to see is the current gen Ram 1500 towing that trailer without air suspension. Majority of the Rams out there don’t have the air suspension. So it would be aimed at more buyers. Plus than we could see the difference in suspension and squat. Unless you’ve done that already I missed it.

    @hellkitty1014 Před 3 lety

    Must have a 3.92 to tow heavy. The 3.21 is geared way to wide for towing this heavy. A little toy trailer would be fine, but this trailer outsizes the Ram considerably. The 4×4 Off Road Pkg w/ trailering pack is a beast. You get the 3.92, stiffer/taller springs, 18s or 20s with far aggressive tires, and other goodies. Ram intentionally keeps the Limited not being the tow king. Which is weird because our Limited 3500s will bring down a house.😂

    • @JB_WhoWork
      @JB_WhoWork  Před 2 lety +1

      XL (extra load) tires aren’t as robust as an LT tire with a 10 ply rating. Sidewalls are softer therefore they flex more going down the road giving you a better ride at the expensive of towing control.
