The UN-Turned Bowl - Wood Turning

- An unknown shrub root becomes an un-turned, natural edge bowl. I used a glue block for the first time, ever, as it was the only way I could find to hold this odd shaped piece. Nature abounds in this beautiful turning!

Phil, I only chucked that into the box because I knew that I don't have anywhere like enough experience to have a clue what to do with it other than the burn pile. All the while, I knew there was beauty within the beast, but you could have chucked it to the burn pile and no one would have cared. But, no! You just had to go and show me what I'd turned down. Thanks. 😎
Oh, by the way ... We both 🎉😍 *LOVE* 💖💞 how that turned out! Thank you for treating our old shrub's root so well! So nice!
Thanks to you, Dave, I no longer have a burn pile. I have found that anything can be turned. I will admit to picking some up and putting them down, scratching my head but sooner or later, we get it turned!
Thank you, buddy, I'm glad you two like it! Me too!
Phil
Only goes to prove the old adage that 'Less is More'. Truly inspiring piece yet again. Thank you so much Phil.
I appreciate your great comment, Alan, thank you!
Well,,,,,,,,,,,,There was an old turner who lived in a shoe, turned so many bowls he didn't know what to do, He became so famous across the whole land, posted videos of his work which we all thought was grand. All this nonsense is because at certain angles it does look like an old leather boot. Fabulous work Phil. You honestly deserve a medal for the brave way you attempt such projects. The use of the clamp was inspiring including the hot glue to keep it in place. From gnarly and snarly to Objet d'art. Wonderful.
Wow, such prose on this Tuesday, Alan! I enjoyed all of it, too! Thank you for taking your time to watch and for your great comment! 😊
It's astonishingly beautiful piece! I'm glad that no person was harmed or dismembered in the making of this bowl.
Haha, me too, Bonita! 😊
Phil you kept me on the edge on this video but on that note another favorite love it
It was a weird one, Bobby! Thank you! 😀
You are amazing, took an impossible shrub base and created a work of art. Nature can learn lessons from you, Phil.
Haha! Oh, I think I've learned a lot from Nature, Mitch! Thank you so much, I'm really glad you like it!
Pjil
Now you have all my respect for turning this. It is a true work of art! I hoped you would do something like this at previous intervals, now you did not disappoint! Thank you.
😊
Gorgeous, needs sparkling gems and gold heaped in the center. Hard to think of anything else worthy of that setting. Very glad you stayed safe while you turned it. Thank you.
Thanks so much, Patricia! 😊
Phil, I'm convinced peoplle send you wood to try to find something you can't turn. What they don't realize is that they are giving wood to a great turner not just a good turner. I find pieces similar in character much more fulfilling than a basic round bowl. Great job.
I'm so glad you like the odd stuff like this, Gerald! After a few of these, it's sooo difficult to turn something just "normal." Thank you so much!
You make it hard to look at a piece of wood without wondering what if! Thanks as always for pushing the limits
I couldn't read a better comment, James. Thank you!
Watched in the middle of the night but couldn't sign in. You did magic again Phil! Certainly agree with Andy Phillip's comment.
Thanks for watching, Vaughn, I'm glad you like this!
I have been a machinist for 45years can't wait to get a lathe to do what you do.
😊
Phil you are absolutely amazing with what would appear to be a junk piece of wood, and then turn it into something so beautiful!!!!!👍👍👍
Wow, thank you, Jack! This one was fun!
Such beautiful possibilities that you find in those odd shaped places! Oh my!
😊
It is cool and we all love it. Use it as a base for a flower vase.
Thank you, Khan! Cheers!
Wild and crazy Phil but once again you turned out a nice piece have a wonderful and blessed day
Thank you, Duane! 😊
I really like this one. From just the right angle, it reminds me of a sleeping dragon :)
😊
Amazing! Another duckling to a swan. Your work is so darn good!
Thank you so much 😂
OK Phil, I have to admit that I loved your Unturned bowl. Your finish product unturned turned out pretty nice and you didn't have to remove the tenon. Good job
Glad you enjoyed it, Raul! Thank you!
What a difference start to finish, you knocked it out the park 👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much, Douglas!
So incredibly beautiful. Great job, Phil 😁
Thank you so much, Samantha! 😊

That would be cool! 😊
Phil you are not afraid to take on a challenge I'll tell and it looks pretty cool that tape was something else! I never thought that would hold on but you proved me wrong!
Thanks great video and stay safe my friend!
Thank you, Larry, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Phil, I love the fact that you left the outside untouched. It is such an unusual shape and it’s naturalness really adds to the overall piece. Bravo!!!
Thank you, David! I just didn't feel I could turn the outside and come up with anything better than what already existed.
Good evening, Phil.
Very impressive. You had me on the edge of my seat.
I was right there with you, Ray! LOL!
You should receive an award for woodturning bravery!!! Beautiful piece. 👍♥️🙂

You do the most amazing work with the oddest pieces of wood! Gosh! What a wonder!
What an encouraging example!
Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, Linda! 😊
The beauty of the piece is in the eye of the beholder 😍❤️🇬🇧
😊
Yes Indeed Phil. Your piece looks real beauty 😍🤩
😊
Great job Phil. Looks good. Watching you turn wood is mesmerizing to me.
Thanks, Terry! 😊
I saw a nice piece of firewood for the barbecue, yet you again turned it into art😁
No such thing as firewood if you have a lathe, Johan! 😊
Great job another example of your ability to think out of the box to a wonderful result.
Thank you very much, Victor! 😊
Doing some binge watching. Beautiful piece Phil! Thanks!!!
Cool, thanks, Mark! 😄
Phil a very strange bowl but very interesting and awesome, yes give any piece of wood to the master of rough turning pieces. Fantastic.
Thank you for your kind comment, Kobie!
Hi Phil i just love your thinking out loud about what you can do with this piece, it gives me more encouragement to study a piece before turning thank you for another excellent tutorial video Jim.
Wonderful! I'm so glad you are willing to give something like this a try, Jim! As long as you can work out a way to hold it, you're good to go. Thank you!
Thanks Dave, keep the roots a comin 👍
Haha! There's plenty more where that came from, Tyler. Dave is way ahead of you!
You never cease to amaze!! Another cool bowl from bad firewood! Thanks for sharing the journey.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Another beautiful bowl Mr Anderson, you are certainly braver than I with that clamp flying around! You picked the perfect finish, I love it, so au naturel.
Thank you very much! 😊
Very creatively done with beautiful results! I love the chainsaw marks and amazing color. You take the most challenging pieces and make them heirlooms.
Thank you, Susanne! 😊
Love, love, love it! Nature at its best ( until the next one comes along!)
Absolutely! Just let that nature show through, Beatrice!
Just fabulous, to turn that chunky old root into such a beautiful thing! But then I love it in its 'raw' state too, you just improve it❤
So nice of you, Ruth, I'm glad you can appreciate the nature in the piece! 😊
Gotta say, i did not see that comming off well. Another superb effort!
Thank you, Chris! Cheers!
Good job! When it sits it looks like a well loved pair of boots at certain angles. I can just see some succulent plant in there.
Thank you, Judith! 😊
That was a pleasure to watch you work and a joy to see the result. Thank you very much for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you so much!

I share your love of bark and gnarly root balls.... love seeing new techniques and I learn something from each of your videos... thanks Phil, you are like a super hero with out a cape... but then wearing your cape while turning word probably be a bad idea... so you may actually have one... maybe... or not...
Haha, great, funny comment, Jack, thank you! 😊

You are right "You know I love it". Okay so who finally sends Phil something he can't or won't try to turn? Tuffy I think you must be next, Dave didn't make it this round. I keep wondering is this the one? Nope not this time. What a challenge for the rest of us. great job Phil.
That's the idea, Tim. I want everyone digging through their firewood pile. Who know's what's in there? Thank you, I'm glad you love it!

Phil
Always another wonderful job. I did notice on this video that your video is much sharper and the details are much crisper, good camera you have
Thank you very much, Dave! It is a good camera even if it is old. I got it from Craigslist. Literally owned by a little ol' lady. I think it's about 10 years old, doesn't have a lot of fancy bling like the newer cameras but it gets the job done rather well.
Yes...I do love it...
Thank you, Russ, I'm so glad!
Cool 👍
Fun, too, William! 😊
Very nice!

Hadn't actually figured even Super Phil could do anything with what I was going to toss into the fireplace 🔥 and Mrs D said (this, I swear, is true!), "Send it to Phil. He might be able to figure out something, right?"..... Well, right? 😏 😉 😁 Oh, yeah!
Thank you, Tuffy! Unusual may be the description of the day for this one! HA!
