- I have finally got around to reviewing my ONDU 4x5 rise pinhole camera.
For this review I had it down to the Beachy Head lighthouse which turned out to be a super hot humid morning (I apologise for the sweat, the heat was intense.)
Throughout this review I show you the process I go through taking a photo with my ONDU 4 x 5 rise. I cover a few specifications, build quality, field a few lines, shutter system and a few other details.
For a better understanding of the rise feature I have also put together another video which goes into more detail, however I do cover the basics in this video.
(Understand why so many pinholes - • Why so many pinholes? )
I have previously done an unboxing video when I first received this camera
Unboxing my ONDU 4x5 - • MY NEW 4X5 PINHOLE CAM...
In the video I used Fomapan 100 film and home developed it with Ilford DD-X.
Really hope you enjoy this review and please make sure you go check out ONDUs website along with all their other amazing pinhole cameras.

Thank you for the kind words and great review, always a pleasure watching you shoot!
Thank you, always a pleasure to use your camera's 😁
Great review, Will. Love my walnut 6x9 Ondu....as you know 😊
Beautiful camera. On my future buy list.
You won't regret it 😁
Great videos and good photography.
Needed some inspiration today and watching you has me loading up my 6x17 pinhole. Thanks for the great content.
Thank you Thomas, glad it inspired you to get out, what 6x17 do you have?
Excellent Will a great review and fab set of images
Thank you very much Jim ☺️
Wonderful Video!! I have an Ondu 6x6 Rise. It's a wonderful camera.
Thank you Garon, I have heard and seen a lot of good things from the 6x6, a stunning little camera for sure 😊
pretty jealous of your local scenery Will. Great demonstration of the Ondu 4x5 :)
Thank you Matt, it is a stunningly beautiful location 😊
Great Vid Will. If I didn’t already have one I’d be buying for sure. Fun camera to use with great quality. Ondu have top notch customer service too - first camera had a strong vignette issue on one of the rise pinholes but they took care of me and sorted it out. Got my eye on the 4x5 easy now… 😬
Thank you Paula, I remember you saying about that issue, glad it got sorted. Top notch customer service makes a huge difference 👍
The movement that you have descibed (usually used in normal large format cameras) in order to keep the lines straight is called raise and fall (for the vertical axis) and shift (for the horizontal axis), not tilt. Tilt is normally used with a lens in order to lay down the plane of focus.
Good video. That looks like a lovely camera. The magnetic features seem so well thought out, tripod threads everywhere you could want them, bubble levels, filter holder attachment and of course the wood looks beautiful. Maybe if they could offer something like the Zero system for different focal lengths where you stack attachments on the back for longer focal lengths? Maybe that would make it too fussy for them? I do have a question about the rise feature. How does that compare to just moving the tripod up or down? Maybe a video you could do? I know it should be similar, but also different (right?) because the relationship between the film and the pinhole it is being exposed by is actually changing. Not sure how this relates to a simple camera rise or lowering via tripod.
Hi Justin, thank you.
A system like the zero image would be great, it may be to much hassle, not sure. I know Reality so subtle have recently built one with different focal lengths and a rise system, the 4x5z.
Adjusting the height of the tripod would work for some shots, with the lighthouse though I would have had to gone 10ft + high to get the whole of it in using the centre pinhole and keeping the camera square, also the horizon would still be centre as that is where the pinhole is.
I may have a play around and see what I can do.
I have both the Ondu 4x5 rise and 4x5 easy, love them both. The folks at Ondu are first class making quality cameras and standing completely behind them.
They are stunning, and the build quality is beautiful. They certainly stand out from the crowd ☺️
nice! :)
Thank you Sina 😊
Don't have one myself but I like watching videos on pinhole and medium to large format film photography
Doubt if I'd have the patience considering I'd never go back to 35mm film photography 📷👍
Thank you Eltin, glad you enjoy watching 😁
The rise function is a great idea. Does it affect things like vignetting and/or light fall off on the part of the film farthest from the ‘rise’ opening?
It's doesn't to much actually, some photos I notice it more than others, but I don't mind a bit of vignetting.
@@WillGudgeon Thanks. I’m not opposed to some vignetting either.
Hows the Vero experience been so far? mine sucks, i think it's an android compatability issue...shame tho, it's a good locking platform 😒
Hey, it's going ok, not pushing it, I'm also on Android and find it a bit hit or miss sometimes, also have the desktop version which is easier to use and I prefer. But going to stick with it and see if things progress, just need to find one good platform and stick with that, to many options 😬😁
@@WillGudgeon yeah, same here. Just one good platform and i'm good. Will wait a month or two before trying again and hopefully they've got it sorted
what ballhead do you use
