Corgi Juniors Fiat X1/9 (056)

- On the bench today is a Corgi Juniors Fiat X1/9, which is a very popular diecast and you can see why. It’s a nice looking car. This one has been well loved, resulting in worn out decals and some deep gouges on the targa top roof. I wonder how that happened… I’ll give it a fresh paint job and a wheel swap along with some much needed exterior details and this little Italian special should come out looking as good as new.
The Fiat X1/9 is a two-seater mid-engined sports car designed by Bertone and manufactured by Fiat from 1972-1982 and subsequently by Bertone from 1982-1989. With a transverse engine and gearbox in a mid-mounted, rear-wheel drive configuration. It was the well-known 1290cc 4-cylinder which delivered a whopping 75 horsepower. The X1/9 was noted for its balanced handling, retractable headlights, lightweight-removable hardtop, front and rear-storage compartments, and for being designed from its conception to meet the late 1960s U.S. safety regulations. The X1/9 also experienced a sporting use, with Group 3 specimens and also with a special Group 5 entry by Dallara.
Enjoy this Fiat X1/9 makeover. If you like the video, please give it a thumbs up, subscribe to my channel and hit the notification bell for regularly updated content. Your respectful comments are always welcome. Be sure to tell me where you’re watching from. I’m a world traveller, so I’m interested to know. Stay safe. Stay healthy.

Wow Andrew it is better than my first expectation 🤩👏👍 thanks for the shoutout 😉
Thanks for the approval. It's your opinion that matters here most, as it was your request. I know you like this model so I'm happy you're pleased. I actually like the lime green on it, with a few black accents. And you are very welcome for the shout out. Hope you get a few hits out of it. You deserve each one for your excellent channel. Such a cool collection! 😎
I also have two Fiat X 1/9 rally 1972 - Bertone, replicated at 1/36 scale by Corgi / Made in Great Britain, made a video about them. Five stars restoration, very good work, a real pleasure to watch! 🏆
Thanks a lot. It seems to be a very popular model, in all sizes. I can see why. I'll check out your vid! 👊
I think this came out great, including the paint! Looking forward to our build! I can appreciate the shag carpeting on the wheels! As a child of the 70s, that was fun playing with cars on the carpeting!
Ha, me too, Mark! Every time I take one apart I wonder what the little owner did with them, and when they were given up. Hope to get them each back into circulation! That's the goal. Working on a '75 Corvette now... Taking another summer road trip. That'll be my next upload.
@@MapleLeafCustoms enjoy your trip my friend and be safe!
Fantastic job on the restore and hats off to you that you donate these to children!
Thanks, Ed. I appreciate the kind words. Thanks for visiting. Come on back any time!
The finished output turned out great! You made the car look 10x better than the original! Congrats! 👏 👍
Thanks, Austin. That's a nice compliment. Glad you liked it. Come back often and look around. And have a great day today. 👊
Green and black are perfect combination. Like all the added detail, really makes the car.
Thanks, Chris. The colour was requested, and it's starting to grow on me now. I think it needed the black to break it up though. Be cool, brother! ✌️
Great job Andrew!!!! I drove on in 85 and I loved it. Thanks for sharing
Hi Steve, and thanks. I've never even been in an X1/9 (not sure I'd fit at 6'2") but they sure are cool little cars!
Love that little casting! The lime green really does work and the wheel swap finished it off nicely!
Thanks, Jim 👍
You’ve done this one justice my friend. Greeting from Grimes, Iowa.
Thanks Charlie Dogg. I appreciate it. Have a super day now.👊
My all around favorite Fiat.
Hi Gary, there a nicely restored X1/9 in my neighbourhood, over here in Switzerland, also in lime green! 🍁
Way to make that Corgi look killer. Once again, great choice for the wheels.
Thanks. Yes, the wheels help this one look great in the end. ✌️
It's a lovely colour combination Andrew! Daisy fresh! Good job! 😎👍
Many thanks, Sol! The request was for lime green, which I thought was a bit crazy, but as it turns out that's one of the original casting colours. Have a great day! 👊
Brings back memories!
Same for me!
Very nice makeover, that bright green colour certainly look very 70's :) This Fiat was kind of ahead of it's time, as similar mid-engine cars came later in the 80's, like Pontiac Fiero and Toyota MR-2.
It's true, and you are very knowledgeable. I drive a Porsche 987 with a mid mounted Boxster engine. It's perfectly balanced and you can accelerate into corners, as opposed to slowing down. The Fiat led the way in that regard. Thanks for tuning in regularly and leaving great insights and comments. Cool. 👊
I'm diggin it Andrew! ROCK ON! BUILD STRONG!
Glad you like the little Fiat. It's a nice car. Thanks for taking the time to visit and comment too. Come on back any time!
Very very good job! 👍👋

Yes, the little X1/9 was ahead of its time, and this diecast has proven to be very popular. Lots of memories coming out! I still see the odd one on the roads around here in Switzerland/Germany. It's still a head-turner! Have a super day now.
W🍩W, cool color! Hard to loose that in the sandbox... We're inching closer and closer to the stingray!
That lime green was requested, so I obliged. Starting to grow on me, though. I hope it hits the sandbox again. That's my goal. The Corvette is on the bench! Thanks again for the invitation to participate. One more road trip this week, so that'll be my next upload. Be cool! ✌️

This is only the third of your videos I've seen, and up front I want to tell you I have made no videos of my own. I am not serving my work up to a world of scrutiny, yet. I am struck by the relaxing tone of your work. Your voice and your attitude to your craftsmanship are conversational and inviting and allow a viewer to feel at ease. The work we do on these cars comes down to our choices. The choices we make are products of who we make these for, what our budgets are for our hobby and even just what supplies are available because of the COVID-19 pandemics effect on the supply chain. I noticed your orange peel issues, and I think it's a reaction between different brands of products, or it could be the technique used to apply one didn't work for applying the other. Toy manufacturers finishes are not quite as perfect as we think they are, and we judge our own work harshly. That said, I remember these cars on the streets. What struck me about them was the contrast between the shiny green paint and the matte black roof and trim. As the car aged time, wear and care weren't kind to the trim and roof. (We have much better car care products now.) You gave your car an overall shiny clear coat. Although it would be more work, I would have liked to have seen what was flat on the real car to be flat in scale. If it's a toy for a child it may matter less, but as a child it would have mattered to me. (Hence you could say I persue this hobby to correct perceived mistakes 😂! No, I'm not judgmental or OCD!🤣) Again, it comes down to who are you creating the car for. My other comments echo those made previously, so glean from them what you will. I'm watching and posting from the Newark Bay side of Jersey City, NJ (USA) where once baseball's Jackie Robinson made his minor league debut for the Montreal Monarchs. Have fun with your toys!
Hello David! Thank you for watching my videos and taking the time to post a well thought out response. I can tell you're passionate about the hobby and very knowledgeable as well. I appreciate your insights on the little Fiat and, as with all respectful comments, I take them as fodder for my continuing education. I'm new to the hobby myself, having only begun these restorations in mid March. With only a couple dozen cars under my belt, I consider my skill level to be 'Beginner Enthusiast' and I have decided to post my work to a world of scrutiny! Please continue to visit here and feel free to lend more help by way of what you see I can do better. I'm wide open. Have a really great day today. Good on you for leaving it. I'm the kind of guy that would have stripped that back and started over, lol. I'm trying to let my mistakes shine and learn from them, and let others learn from them... But it's hard. Cheers from a beautiful island somewhere in the Pacific ocean.
Evan, I was pretty close to stripping it down and starting over. Believe me. But these are a permanent record of my journey. I'm sure I'll look back on these early efforts with a smile one day. What a fiddly contruction, I have a blue version by another diecast maker. This Corgi is still better than my version....mine has 1/4” of base showing on the bottom from the side view. It looks like an off-road Fiat. I love the color, and you did a great job.
I hear you. Gotta work with what you get, but it's unfortunate when the diecast makers stray a bit too far from the original. I think the Corgi Juniors is OK. Still a lot of base showing, front and back, but it is what it is. Be safe down south and have a great day. 😎

You're right. Kinda got that same wedge shape to it. 🍁
I love this casting. Awesome wheels, very well detailed. Maybe the problem with paint could've been a reaction between prime coat and the green paint, or grease over the body car, or, and I bet for it, your fingers nail technology 😂😂😂 . Anyway, it looks good at the end. Greetings 👍 👋👋
Thanks, Hugo. The final result was OK, but I'll never know what caused that paint problem. I tried real hard to reduce it, short of stripping it and starting over (almost did that). hi new friends good vidio 👍
Thank you! Have a great day today.
Finally got chance to watch your video, Andrew . It now looks wonderful, I do remember those little cars running about and from what I remember they were mostly lime green. Could you tell me also how you did your start up still with the airbrush. Not that I will copy you, but it looks very professional.
Great to relax watching your video after that long hot day at work.
Take care as always.
Jeff
Hi Jeff. Glad you liked the little Fiat. My start up pic with the channel logo was simply done using Pages - the built in word processor on my iMac. It handles graphics well too. Found a few pics online that I liked and put them over a work mat pic. Moved and resized everything until I liked it. No rocket science there. I added a few CZcams symbols to the laminated version that I put on my work mat while working. Hope I'm answering the right question and that it helps!
Thanks Andrew, none of my programs could handle overlays, but it does look very professional.
Take care, Jeff
Fingernail technology! 😂😂😂 The ole "sticker picker" - I hate stickers! LOL! Great looking car, slick work! 👍
Thanks, man. It cleaned up well. I always liked this casting. Sounds like the real car might have been slightly underpowered, but always caught my eye. Still see them on the roads over here in Europe.
@@MapleLeafCustoms Here in the Northeastern U.S. if we seen one of those in any condition, we'd call it exotic, LOL! But a lot of folks here think that classic Hondas and Datsuns are exotic... Thanks 👍 A couple of lessons learned, but OK in the end. Thanks for visiting often and commenting. That's nice. 👊
I think it turned out well. I was just wondering, have you ever tried to fill deeper scratches with JB Weld?
I've got some JB Weld but use that for larger problems like broken A pillars. Shallow surface scratches usually can be sanded out with wet/dry sandpaper or fine steel wool. If they persist I've used some Tamiya putty as filler, followed by more light sanding...
Nice job! I am finding that hitting the paint with a paper towel and/or some of that plastic polish makes the paint smooth. Just need to be careful with the polish, it will take paint off the corners before you know it.
I'll try that. The wet sanding between coats - the standard treatment - took it down a bit, but not completely. Gathering tips and experience, both! Thanks, brother. ✌️
@@MapleLeafCustoms I have a hot wheels Jack Rabbit coming out on Aug, 3 where I do the paper sanding trick. I did very light plastic polish on the 3rd coat of clear. Turned out very nice.
a successful study. health to your hand
Many thanks for your compliment. Have a wonderful day.
The way you title the videos with the vehicles name and manufacturer looks good, I think I have spotted a slight error in your "about you" section, I think you meant siku, not suki, I would want to be told if it was my error.
Hi Colin, you've got a sharp eye! Thanks for catching that. I actually saw the Suki/Siku mistake a long time ago and fixed it (I'm particular about these things too) and it's been updated as I see it on my laptop, but apparently the correction hasn't been updated widespread. I just went back to try again - this time making a paragraph break - and it shows the changes on my screen (as Administrator). I hope it's reflected on yours as well. Thanks for pointing it out. I agree, I'd want to know. If you catch anything else...
If its just a reply I tend not to bother correcting mistakes as most times they are typo's, I am glad you see it that way. I am taking a leaf from your book as I am about to upload a video of my collection on miniature clocks and I am going to add a title to it, it looks much better on the thumbnail.
