    Troy, thanks a lot, i got enlightenment because of this video. i've been curious about Rusty's picking technique all this time, he is one of the cleanest shredder, all the note is very clear though he plays very fast. This video has increase my speed on my alternate picking a lot, and also prove the the note rusty plays is played individually not double. His technique is a lil different than yours but has few things in common. I love your video series. Good job man

      Rusty's great! He's super fluid for the amount of speed he has. His elbow approach is definitely different than mine and it's fun to try and work on that.

    Wow awesome videos and the action is so low on his guitar, awesome setup.

    He also picks with what I would call the "back" of the pick. I pick with the part of the tip that is closest to my thumb tip. He uses the part of the pick that is closest to his wrist. The pick is slightly slanted towards the headstock of the guitar.

    Hey, Troy. I think I found a good example of that "third element" type picking method we discussed in the main Season 2 episode 1 thread. While we have many examples of Cooley sweeping to adjacent strings on runs, here we seem to have an example of him switching to adjacent strings on an ascending run after a downstroke (seen in the phrase beginning at 0:29 for example) , while maintaining strict alternate picking. This Cooley fellow seems to be in a league of his own.

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  Před 10 lety +1

      Not exactly -- :29 is upward pickslanting! There's no scooping motion there because he's already up. His fast technique that follows is completely up.

    • @Praxia1
      @Praxia1 Před 10 lety

      ***** Hmm. I'm still digesting all these great insights. I think we may just be incurring a semantic difference here. What I've been trying to convey as having worked well for me on ASCENDING runs (not descending ) I believe is upward pick slanting then. I actually didn't feel comfortable with saying I was "scooping". I'm not even exactly sure what scooping is actually - but it doesn't sound very effective from a speed mechanics standpoint. Sorry if this is getting confusing - I'm still working it all out!

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  Před 10 lety +1

      No you're correct -- you're downward pickslanting, and scooping to switch after downstrokes -- as evidenced by the difficulty you encounter when playing the descending version of the scale. Rusty does not have these difficulties because he is naturally an upward slanter, hence his situation is entirely the reverse of yours. Switching after downstrokes is easy for him, as are descending lines. We're getting way ahead of ourselves here and we'll cover all this in future episodes, but that's the quick and dirty!

    • @Praxia1
      @Praxia1 Před 10 lety

      ***** That makes absolute sense - I am scooping! Damn! Time for me to change my technique to that which works more consistently for both ascending or descending runs! I believe beginning to see the light, Troy :-).
      Btw, when is scooping useful? Do you recommend avoiding it altogether when it comes to speed picking mechanics?

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  Před 10 lety +1

      No, you're doing it correctly, odd numbered note groupings require two-way pickslanting. So you will start on one angle, then reverse it, then reverse it again -- as long as you're switching strings. Again, we'll cover this in detail in the show, and it will definitely be easier to visualize in a 20-minute episode than here in the comments!

    What software do you use to slow down your videos?

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  Před 10 lety +3

      Edward Vaughn We don't use any software to slow down the videos -- it's the other way around. The phone films much faster than a normal camera. And you can do this with the iPhone 5S and other high-end smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S5. All you have to do is drop the phone footage into your movie editing software, like Final Cut or iMovie or Adobe Premiere, and it's automatically slow. Amazing times we live in!
