One of Football Manager’s most notable qualities is the incredible ability to scout a ridiculous amount of wonderkids and tell you who is going to be the best player in the world in 10 years. The issue though is all wonderkids do not turn into superstar players, so who from FM eight years ago actually turned into a star player? That is the question we set out to answer!
Football Manager from 2014 is just long enough away that those wonderkids are reaching their prime and we can properly assess whether they have reached their potential or not based on FM. If you want to see us do more of these let me know, I figure one old version of the game per video is good timing for the wonderkid assessment but hit me in the comments with more info if you have ideas. It is very fun to do.

So as a Schalke Fan I can tell the tale of Max Meyer and Ill-advised career choices.
Meyer in his last season on Schalke was FANTASTIC. He played in Central Midfield, but besides his lack of height he fought like a lion and didn't shy away from any duel. Just having an all around great fighting spirit that everyone loves at Schalke.
Unfortunately for him, it was his last contract year. And being the beast of the player he was in this season, his agent Roger Wittman smelled the big bag of money for his client (and especially for himself). So, they tried to negotiate and nothing ever came out of it. The Fanbase (or the ones I was in contact with at the time) grew inpatient with the club, who had or rather has a reputation to grow young, promising players only to lose them for next to nothing.
This all changed when Roger Wittmans famous quote reached the press. He tried to push the price, saying "This is World Class Player Max Meyer we are talking about. He could play at every top European club he wants." (You may have seen this wording in the comments already.) Schalke Fans, again, including myself, began clowning Meyer. We may be desperate, but no single player is bigger than the club.
Well, Schalke didn't buy it, too and Meyer left the club the following Summer, only to become one of the prime examples of how greedy agents can really f**k up your promising career.
He ended up at palace where he didnt suit their managers style of play and from then on never recovered. There is still a great player in their but it could have been alot more different if he had a different agent
I started to follow Schalke not long after Raul joined. Absolutely adored the team until 2017ish.

I was surprised he even signed for palace for the level of potential that he had at the time. now he's nowhere to be seen.

In 2015 Luke Shaw broke his lower leg. This is why he didn't have that many matches in those years.
Otherwise he might have played over 25+ matches per season from the start of his career I think.
Edit: it could have been a career ending injury, glad he still performs at the highest level.
Their is a great player in their. We saw in the 20/21 season and hopefully ten hag can bring back to his best
Shaw always look in important games a little bit lazy and hes body dont look like a shape of profissional player.
I think he needs a mental and physical hard work to became a real deal.
and now, I don't think he'll get much game time under Ten Hag.

That was one of the worst breaks I've ever seen. Wasn't even given a foul let alone a red card despite being a shocking tackle and the guy who made the tackle went on to equalise later in the game🙃
Shaw was always a good player. Just never been played in a decent back line for United. Now he has decent competition for left back and doesn't need to play next to Noche Libre Maguire if he gets back into the team.
As a die hard Flamengo fan I can tell you Gabigol is always one of my first signs on FM. He is currently having a down season in Brazil and I don't think he will be on Tite's WC side. That being said, he's a great sign in FM, especially if you can get him under £20M.

@@cryptixx7720 Mitrovic is interesting to me, as he seems to be too good for the championship, and yet not quite good enough for the prem. His prem totals are 11 in 37 and 3 in 27, whilst his Fulham championship seasons have been 12 in 17, 26 in 40 and 43 in 44. He's a beast in the second tier, and yet hasn't made the step up to keep Fulham up yet.

Pretty insane that u dont remember Markovic. He was a must sign back then, a rapid winger who could cut it any club, and i remember it going very fast from him being a must sign on fm, to suddenly Liverpool buying him from Benfica, in our friend group we often talked about it as a joke that Liverpool scouting team had a fm save going where Markovic had just won them the cl, so thats why they bought him. Another player i had forgot everything about, KERLON, the seal dribbler. Back in the old fm and youtube compilations day, one of the players i have spend most time watching i think besides Ronaldinho. I was so flabbergasted at his way of dribbling, but there u can talk about someone who didnt become what he was destined too, because of injuries

I remember using luke shaw in FM15. changed his position to a winger, in hope to emulate the next Gareth Bale.
That’s hilarious because he did actually start as a right winger then move to LB as he developed.
I changed him to a CB, and he somehow performs quite well in a back-3 formation as the LCB alongside Smalling (in the center), and Tuanzebe on the RCB. (I play with ManUtd and tried to build an all-English team back then).
My heart still cries for the Yaya Sanogo of Fm12, and then also Lenny Nangis and Carlos Fierro.

Doria was actually an amazing signing for me in the Brazilian league in FM22. He has yellow attributes in literally everything, in addition to having no real weaknesses, he can take pens and FKs. Can play both CB and LB too
Gabriel Barbosa is already an icon in Flamengo. In 2019 he scored a brace in 3 minutes to win us the Libertadores (first one since 1981) at 89 and 92nd minute. He also has been the top scorer in the Brazilian league 3 times. Scored over 100 goals for Flamengo in 4 seasons and is also known as the deadliest penalty taker in Brazilian (maybe south American) football. Loved by Flamengo fans and hated by the other 19 clubs. So PA “-10” meant 180-200, “-8” = 140-160

For future FM's (it will never happen, but one can hope) I wish we could load old official databases into the newest version of the game. Would even pay for a "retro DLC" with different databases. I know there are unofficial databases, but the incorrect dates and birth dates annoy me too much on those.
Would love to see more of these! And if you do it'd be cool to see the players CA in the current FM as well

FM has a lot of swing and misses, but they also identify some greats as well. For all of the misses in FM14, they also highly rated players like Jan Oblak, Raphael Varane, Marquinhos, Sule, Umtiti (damn, there were a lot of good central defender wonderkids in 2014), Luke Shaw, Paul Pogba, Julian Draxler, Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish, and Romelu Lukaku. A lot of misses, but they also did identify the good ones as well.
Some of these players you can buy still on FM22 and get a great amount of seasons, like Gabriel Barbosa, Deulofeu, Dória. Cause like they still "Young" and can give you 2/3 seasons if well used. I like these videos cause makes me see these players again and get nostálgic.
You should do this type of videos more often. Great work 💪

Markovic was a BEAST in Benfica before he was sold to Liverpool but he was devastated by injuries and he never reached the heights that he was destined to.
It's a shame, same with Gabigol being a colossal flop in Benfica, but thankfully he really became a beast in Flamengo.
Hard to succeed if you're not getting any games, always find it harsh to brand players "flops" when they don't even get a chance in the first team, i mean, 1 app for Benfica? that's nothing

I'm shocked you don't know of Lazar Markovic tbh Zealand considering how often you play FM but that might just be me having had a long term Serbia save in 2020
He was a pretty well documented flop in Liverpool's banter era and he's a very strong player in Serbia that's name seems to get floated up every once in a while to play for the national team 23 man squad but never has.
Very scary in FM to play against if you are managing a Serbian club other than Partizan or Red Star but then again who that can regularly play for those teams isn't?
Also I haven't heard much from him in 1 or 2 years so it's possible his form fell off a cliff
Markovic in last years played Europa League and last season 1/8 finals in Conference League where he scored few goals but in league games he didnt score any goals.Now he leaves Partizan and join Gaziantep(Turkey)As a Serbian and biggest fan of Partizan i can tell you that we expect that his career will be much bigger
Really love these where are they now videos! I just wanted to add that Aleksandar Mitrovic has became player with most goals for Serbia (and Yugoslavia) national team last year, and this one he had most goals scored in Championship season last year, with 43 goals! Hopefully Fulham will get him better teamates in PL, or he will change club, because it would be shame to not see him at the highest level. And as for Lazar Markovic, he had terrible season in Partizan, he had bunch of injuries that ruined his career and you can see that he never mentally recovered from that. You can see flashes of greatness here and there, but not enought to be in Partizan squad, so he didn't get contract renewal.

Using Gabriel Barbosa in my Newcastle save on FM22. It’s 23/24 and he’s got 12g13a in the league in January. The guys still got it.

Some context about Marković. He was probably one of the best bits of business Benfica has ever made. He was arguably their best player in the 2013/14 season, scoring vital goals like one against Sporting where he dribbled half the team, or a brilliant chip against a club I now can't remember. He legitimely had the world at his feet in 2014 and FM had very valid reasons to rank him as the 9th best wonderkid. Him not playing the Europa League final after having been unfairly sent off in the semi-final was one of the reasons they couldn't win it, they had to start 3rd choice Miralem Sulejmani. You can look it up, there was a fight between players on the bench in which Marković was not involved and he got sent off for that, even after Vučinić, the Juventus player who got sent off as well, admitted Marković hadn't done anything.
Benfica then sold him to Liverpool for a lot of money at the time, especially for the Portuguese league. He never quite reached the same heights as he did at Benfica, and now even Benfica fans, who used to love him, hate him because he played for Sporting. It's a sad tale of a player who had everything going for him and just couldn't reach it.
Great player in FIFA 14 as well, 87 potential. I loved having him in my team.
This list is super interesting and it shows show how many factors besides talent decides a career. You can be the most talented player, but if your head is not right and if you go to the wrong club at the wrong moment it can be really hard. Getting loaned out every year is hard. I think the best path is going to a club like Ajax at a young age, staying there for a few years and then making a transfer to a big club

I remember i had Dória in a save with Real Madrid. He scored soo many header goals in corners, it was insane. I think he finished several seasons as 2nd or 3rd best goalscorer in the league

FM14 is the game is still play today. I have a save loaded up right now in 2027. Here is how these players turned out:
15. Reyna- not in my database.
14. Deulofeu- 45 caps and 4 goals for Spain. Went to Man City, then Chelsea, then Real Madrid, all in around $27 million. Solid career, a bit better than real life.
13. Mitrovic- Absolute star. All time leading scorer for Serbia at 91 goals and still their top striker at 32. Great in Belgium, then Chelsea. Sold to Monaco where he had three injury shortened seasons and was sold to Norwich in the Premier League where he has averaged 18 goals a season the last five years.
12. Meyer- Sold to Wolfsburg for $10M. Then back to Schalke for $8.5M. Released on a free at 29, never to be heard of again.
11. Brandt- No appearances for Germany. A long career that includes stops Leverkusen, Chelsea, and Roma. But he never scored more than 5 goals in a season.
10. Barbosa- 50 caps and 20 goals for Brazil. Barcelona bought him for $4.4M and loaned him to Stutgart. he played well but only a little for Barcelona. His career took off with a move to Atletico and then Chelsea (they are buying everybody). Sold career that is still ongoing,
9. Markovic- 105 caps and 15 goals for Serbia. Sold to Real Madrid and had a solid career, scoring 41 goals in 196 games. But left on a free to a top Serbian team at the age of 31.
8. Oxlade-Chamberlain- 68 caps and 16 goals for England. He was a rotational player for Arsenal, who sold him to Newcastle who used him as a rotational player and then sold him to a Chinese team. Better for country than club but a decent career nonetheless.
7. Kovacic- 117 caps and 21 goals for Croatia. Inter used him as an AMC and he contributed to 50 goals in three years before he had two injury shortened seasons. But that was good enough for PSG to buy him for $33M. They used him as a central midfielder, so fewer goal contributions but still maintained averaged ratings in the 7.3 range. Milan bought him at 31 for $1.2M and uses him again at AMC with great success.
6. Doria- Love this guy. Bought him in a few saves. Capable at DC, MC, and AMC. 79 appearances for Brazil. Went to Juventus the first Summer and then Barcelona where he is a fixture in the starting 11. Fantastic player.
5. Vitinho- Sold to Porto in 2017 for $11.5M. He retired at some point.
4. Shaw- 26 caps for England. Played well at Southampton. They got relegated to the Championship so he was sold to Celtic. Very nice two seasons with them and then sold to Stoke back in the Premier League.
3. Werner- 143 goals in 437 appearances between Stuttgart, Dortmund, and Frankfurt.
2. Draxler- 6 appearances for Germany. Never left Schalke, made 540 appearances, averaging a 7.2 rating.
1. Marquinhos- 83 appearances for Brazil. Never left PSG, a good career but only averaged a 6.95 rating.

I think it's really good idea to make a list of players that pan out differently from fm 5 or more years ago. Example ; player that play CB in FM only to become midfielder in real life. Or someone that has good physical attributes only to become a good technical player.
It wasn't just FM who hyped Deulofeu. He was supposed to be the next big thing for Barcelona and Spain. At Barça B and Spain U17 to U21 he was a beast. But then he never managed to go the extra mile to actually be Barcelona / National team level.

I've been playing FM for most of my life now. I've started in the year 2000 as 16 teenanger!!
From that time i remember a few gems of wierd stuff:
1) A bulgarian player named Todorov which was a super fast, with 20 pace and acceleration, central midfielder and scored goals as easy as breathe;
2) This Todorov's goals were, in my teams, assisted by an equaly fast Daniel Braaten;
3) But i think the most fascinating, at least in Portugal, was the Tozé Marreco phenomenon. At that time everyone was copiyng the
game, and someone share a copy of the game with an edited database where Tozé Marreco was an incredible striker (like CR7) playing in the portuguese 3rd division. This copy propagate and after a few months everyone that played the game, nation wide, was talking about Tozé Marreco. Funny facts: Marreco mean hunchback and Tozé is now the most recent manager of CD Tondela.
Like this there are many more CM/FM stories and wierd facts.

Are you confusing Tozé Marreco with Tó Madeira? Because Tó Madeira was playing in the 3rd tier for Gouveia back in CM01/02 and had world-class potential, to the point where foreign clubs began inquiring about him. Gouveia then had to tell them there was no Tó Madeira playing for them. Turns out it was a scout for CM01/02 who had added himself to the game with some very generous attributes and potential. Subsequent patches removed Tó Madeira, but the legend lives on.

This could be series but it would be much more interesting if you had shown a screenshot of players attributes at the start of FM 2014, after 8 seasons on holiday and then compare it with attributes on FM 2022
You should maybe do a list of all -10 potential players over the years. No clue how many there are, would be interested.
Maximilian Meyer is a funny case. I'm a Schalke fan and have witnessed all of him. At that time the contracts of our two youth academy stars Meyer and Groetzka expired. Back then, many thought Meyer was the better of the two, and he was. But while Goretzka went to Bayern, Meyer got very cheeky and didn't want to continue at Schalke because the club wasn't big enough for him. At that time we were regularly 3rd in the Bundesliga behind BVB and FC Bayern and ahead of Leverkusen and Leipzig. For that reason alone, the statement was already critical. He then let his contract expire and turned down many offers from other good clubs because he honestly said of himself that he was the best player in the world, he only went to a top 10 club in the world. From then on he was looking for a new club for months, but no top club wanted him. That's why he signed with Crystal Palace and was the laughing stock of all Schalke fans. His career didn't fail because of injuries, lack of potential or poor work ethic. But simply out of excessive self-overestimation.

LoL. this is the last FM i played before hiatus and continue to play again in FM21, my saved was Southampton one of the most exiting team back then, Shaw, Clyne, Ward-Prowse, Gaston Ramirez, Chambers, already on the squad, i also bought Van Dijk and Froster which came true in the real world. But until today i still see Shaw and Draxler as a wonderkid, because i know just how good they truly are, they just need another big break.

it is interesting that Serbia had two players in top15. Next year, we won u21 World Cup and we had so many good wonderkids in that FM.

I realize you were probably too young for these fellas, but you should also ook up Alexandros Papdopoulos, Peter Prospar, Tonton Zola Moukoko, Benedict Vilakazi, Daniel Braaten, Freddy Adu, Guillermo Ochoa, Igor Akinfeev,... they were all wonderkids, some even from before the description of wonderkid even existed in the game.

I mean akinfeev was the starter keeper for Moscow for many years and while he's no Gigi, he was pretty fucking good between the sticks.
And Ochoa really really performs out of his mind at a World Cup but that's pretty much it

I was amazed when CSKA managed to by Vitinho. They obviously had a history of developing talent, which is why I think he went there but he just looked like he struggled to settle in.

I'm still playing FM14 to this day, and my go to wonderkids to buy when managing big club are Gabriel Barbosa, Doria, Mario Pugliese, Will Hughes, Eric Dier, Youri Tielemans, Andrija Zivkovic

What SKIN were those player cards from? And is there an FM2021 version? Those were clean.
markovic had a great season with us at benfica. just one season but he was a joy to watch. in liverpool it seemed he lost the pleasure to play, and all the loans didnt go that well. i am a bit sad for him, because i know how good he was.
He played for my club Partizan this year but didn't do very well. Now he is a free player again, I'm very sad to see him like this
my favorite from back then...
- Armindo Tué Na Bangna aka "Bruma" (Portuguese), he was one of my favorite player back in FM15 and also Fifa15. He's young, fast, strong, good at dribbling, good with both foot... part of my Derby rebuild back then.
- Sammy Ameobi , another talented winger back in the days, but he never live up to his potential and ends up in championship club.
- Danny Welbeck
- Alen Halilovic , the so-called "the next messi" (hugely exaggerated). I see him as the rival to Odegaard back then... but oh boy how far has he fallen.
- Kaan Ayhan , another (kinda) failed future talent from Schalke.

Eder Alvarez Balanta was a monster in FM14. The original Colombian wonderkid.
I absolutely LOVE Forward Madison. They play pretty decent football and they have a great fanbase.
Luke Shaw really would have been one of the top defenders of our generation for sure, a serious leg break though meant he could never get there, it’s a miracle he’s even as good as he now because he ultimately could have had his career taken from him through those injuries, he admitted he got 2 blood clots from his leg break in 2015 v PSV and could have lost his leg!

Would be interesting to know how players like Jamie Vardy and f.ex. Luca Toni were rated in earlier versions of FM. One thing FM doesn´t have are late bloomers, players largely unknown until they become world famous in their late 20s
I have only ever had one in FM and it was mostly because his old club never played him, it´s Daniel Jebbison in FM 22 who got his first cap at the age of 27 after a bargain move to newly promoted Curzon Ashton (my club).
I feel Z may be unaware of Shaw's horrific injury, I feel he would have give him a better review with that knowledge in the fold

Doria's case is interesting, as he arrived very highly rated at Marseille back then. Unfortunately for him, Bielsa was the manager at the time, and he was already beefing with the owners who had sold off the starting cb to Qatar against his wishes. Then when he told them to bring in Alderweireld as the replacement, they showed up with Doria instead. So immediately Bielsa publically told the press he didnt want him, and basically froze him out of the team for the entire year just out of spite. Obviously, this very clearly affected the kid's confidence, especially since he was still so young and arriving in europe for the first time, and he never really fully recovered
