- To celebrate this Mother’s Day, Neil deGrasse Tyson is conducting a very special interview with a very, very special guest: his mom, Sunchita “Toni” Feliciano Tyson!
What was Neil like as a child? Were his science experiments tearing down the house? Toni is here to dish, and, to share details about her own incredible life. You’ll hear Toni tell her story about growing up in New York City during the 1930s. She tells us how she learned English by listening to the radio. And, why she calls New York City the “learning laboratory.”
You’ll hear how she went back to school and got her Masters in gerontology, study of the social, cultural, psychological, cognitive, and biological aspects of aging. Discover what Neil was like growing up. They explore Neil’s early interest in science like making his Saturn-shaped lamp, creating a dark room in the family bathroom, and his early visits to the Hayden Planetarium. And, you’ll hear the story about Neil getting his first telescope!
Neil and Toni also answer fan-submitted Cosmic Queries. Lastly, you’ll learn how Toni dealt with Neil becoming skeptical of religion from an early age. All that, plus Toni shares why Neil’s books are her favorite parts of his large body of work.

20 seconds in and I can see where Neil gets his wit. 90+ yrs old and sharp as a laser scalpel
That's correct
I'm sure other comment replies will have replied the same, but i thought the exact same thing too.
Yeah!
I was about to comment your comment. 😊
Read my mind - NOW we know where he got his brains. I hope I'm that sharp at 90..it'd be an improvement.
Neil has a mom! I always thought he just appeared somewhere in the cosmos as a way for the universe to know itself and tell humanity.
She is much nicer than Sheldon's MeeMaw ...
Awesome comment! LOL
🤣🤣🤣😂
Lol that's funny XD
He was born from the depths of a star silly.
“ I Live in the here and now.” Thank you for introducing me to your mother. She is a genuine treasure as are you.
What an incredible lady, brought her children up first then went back to College & got her Master's degree. So outstanding ❤❤❤
“That is correct!”
She talks so well and fluent that’s rare I feel for people over 90
same!
No one can say she didn't raise her children right
Yea my grandma is in her 90's and she still talks fine and calls my mom like every other day but she doesnt talk this well while my Great Uncle on my dads side was still riding a bike and golfing in his early 80's.. that was like 10 years ago and hes still kickin
She is extremely sharp! Very awesome interview.
My grandmother was also very much like Mama Tyson at that age
As a Puerto Rican female I was so excited to find out that your mother is from Arecibo, Puerto Rico, so am I. I have been a fan of yours for the longest. Neil degrasse Tyson is half Puerto Rican how wonderful. What an intelligent mom you have.
I've been following Dr Tyson and watching his shows and videos for years and I never, until now, knew these many details of his early life. I believe I did hear about his Puerto Rican heritage before. Now that we know it's quite obvious, Puerto Ricans are the most beautiful and talented people in the world.
Why does she have a Indian name - Sunchita is a Indian name
Sonchita is Spanish for nickname “Sunny”.
Oh she is Puerto Rican I was like Neil's mom could pass as white!
I'm puertorican as well. Didn't have any idea he had puertorican heritage either. I'm also from Arecibo. U can tell at 90 his mom is brilliant. It let's u know where he got it from. 💪🇵🇷
I’m barely 4 minutes into this video and already hooked. His mom is sharp, witty and just plain hilarious.
Same! She's so sharp! A real inspiration 👍
She has aged very well, so sharp, great mind!
Same! I thought it was ironic that he forgot what year his Mom was born but is one of the best educators on Earth. Haha Made me smile
@@russellandrewbennett7849 だ
that look on her face in the first second!
RIP Sunchita. What a great mother Lyn, Neil and Steven had.
Sorry to hear she has passed! RIP Mrs. Tyson.
Aww, what a downer, she seems so sassy and fun. RIP ma’am.
Awwe...R.I.P Mama Tyson😢
Rest Well❤
Your mother is adorable 😇. At 77 (my age) I hope to be like her when I grow up. 😄😂🤗❤️💯
😂😂😂😂
I like how she's humble and not overpraising her son like most parents would do
can my son the doctor help me with my kidney stones?
@QTee Exactly
They had other principles those days as she said she was proud on how he interacted or reacted with people, hence I gather, being a decent well balanced human was more worthy of praise and admiration, as should be.
This is a very yogic way of nourishing the children and creating a conducive environment for them to be any future possibilities. The opposite is do it because i say so as Niel mentioned where the outcome or mold of life has been fixed, and creativity and seeking are capped. Such wonderful parents you have, Niel.
The pictures of Ms. Tyson when she was young are absolutely beautiful. ❤ She has lived such an interesting life. ❤
Sorry for your loss Neil.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful talk with your mom ❤
Ditto. She may be gone from this plane in physical form, but she is still resonating! Thank you for this introduction. We need a tshirt in her honor: "Now is the time to do the best you can." Sunchita Tyson

dang!!! that's deep...
NIRMAL JOHN it cuts deep
Wow !!! I had J.J. on Good Times and then later in life, ole Al Bundy !!! Both were the poster boys for "BROKE @SSED " !!!! 🤣 LOLOLOL
At 32 I'm going back to school and I've been concerned and anxious that 'it's too late, I've wasted my life, I missed my chance' but your Mom showed me that it's never too late. Thank-you.
How did it go?
Im 38 and still in school, dont think about it, just do it! The biggest investment you'll ever make is in urself. ✌🏽😎
Do it because it’s never too late
I'm 84 and didn't start over until I was 40. I began doing so many things I hadn't been able to do before. I've always loved music, never had much opportunity until recently. I was able to take some voice lessons and for the last ten years, I've sung in a superb choir, singing music I never thought I'd have a chance to sing. My voice is mediocre at best, but I work hard to keep up. I've attended operas and concerts and mingled with learned academics. It's never too late. Despite feeling you missed your chance, you did learn from those years. You are still coming into your glory years.
I'm 32 too, you give me hope that it's not too late.
My mom was born in 1925 and listening to her was an education. She lived to be 97 , almost 98, and I’m so glad you get to spend time with your mom! It’s valuable.
I love Neil's mom. She's like a wild flower who came up beautiful and strong despite adverse conditions in her early life. She gave her children independence and let them follow their own interests and dreams. That's what good mothers do. Great interview.
Never before have I ever seen Neil look at someone, with so much admiration and love in his eyes, like he did in this episode. Amazing mother-son interaction. ❤️
Other than when he interviewed Stephen Hawking ...
@@reallymysterious4393 😁 possibly 😂
I'm so use to him rolling his eyes.
She's the only person who would get him together 😆
Man, your mother is looking unbelievably amazing at age 90 and a half!!
The question in the minds of many...Did u learn and or learn to speak or write Spanish...n better yet dance SALSA?
@@rayfalcon1172great question
We need more parents like Neil’s mom. She is so sharp. May the universe continue to bless her.
This was wonderful. Shocked I hadn't come across this sooner.
My sincere condolences, Dr. Tyson. Be well.
Mama Tyson is healthier and sharper than most uf us.
She seems sharper than Neil..lol

Gruenpunktiert I support this
I'm puertorican. I admired Neil and learned more about the universe and he got me interested in physics mostly because of him. So to not only find out he's half puertorican but his mom ans her family are from my hometown was mind-blowing.
This experience of listening to the two of you and you, Neil, shrinking in your chair to be smaller than mom out of respect gave me goosebumps.
Now I see where Neil deGrasse got that beautiful laugh of his and sense of humour from.
Yes. I picked up on that too.
My mom is awesome
Me - I enjoyed this.
Her - That is correct.
Right? 😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Whenever she said "that is correct " I keep thinking of Leonard and his mother in The Big Bang Theory, except there's way more love and affection with Neil and his mother 😂😂😂
💀💀😭😭I love this woman
This is the healthiest relationship between mom and son/daughter I have ever seen
Neil, Thanks for letting us in into your life. This was indeed a special episode.

❤️All simply because she keeps doing her best.❤️
What a wonderful soul, I'm jealous of Neil for having this great person as his mother if there were more people like her in the world there would be far more love peace and happiness in the world I nominate Neil's mother as mother Earth
Live in the here and now was tremendous takeaway.
Thank you, Neil, for sharing this interview with Mom!
As a 65 yr. old retired U.S. Navy Puerto Rican I also want to thank your mother and father for the great job that they did in rising you, your brother and sister. I am more proud of who your mother is and where she came from, it was very nice to see this show thank you for bringing her to the show. I look forward to seeing you again when you come back to Tampa can't wait. As we say in the Navy BZ
Your mom is an intelligent, sharp, and fabulous woman. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful conversation with us.
Lost my mom 2006
.lost my dad yesterday to covid_19......treasure your mom Neil...!.
My condolences
I’m so sorry man
May he Rest In Paradise
I’m so sorry to hear that. You are right. We have to treasure our family.
I'm really sorry for your loss, my friend 💔💔💔
What a beautiful family Neil's family is. It was an honor for me to watch this interaction with his mother. This will be broadcast everywhere to teach Americans the value of a mother. I have always said a mother is a school; if you train her well, you will have created a great society. This Ph.D. writer is filled with warmth and a strong belief that America needs mothers like Mrs. Tyson. Indeed, Donald's mother was far from being that intelligent or graceful.
@Dr - I think most Americans already realize the value of our mothers.
@@MrOu83 Realizing the value of one's mother does make one tamed; this valuable mother must have tamed her children. That is why mothers are in schools; if trained well, they will have trained a good society. The question is whether American society is good, decent, peaceful, and respectable.
Yes, it's apparent that the mother and father of Neil were aligned and supportive of each other, their children & elderly family members. He had a strong foundation with Caribbean parents that encouraged education, supported exploration and valued pursuing life passions.
This interview touched me in so many many ways:
She's a smart, sharp, strong woman, and he's respectful deciding that who he is is irrelevant in front of his mom. The conversation is fluid. Puerto Rican and black at its finest producing a genius, breaking many stereotypes that many people have about those 2 races/ethnicities, it's just very beautiful. I hope she's still around and doing well.
Me too... She's awesome 👍🏽😊
Cut the race talk, we are all human beings.
@@gaillouise8310 yes we are human beings.... it's sad that certain people don't feel the same way ....
Yes and the fact that Neil's parents, Puerto Rican & Haitian, were cohesive in their values and the support they provided to their children was important too. Together, his parents, set the strong foundation for their children's lives.
She must be so proud of you and vice versa. So sweet
I must applaud mother Tyson she stopped the trend and allowed her children to choose their direction in life and did not seek to manipulate them. All the while loving them. This is what has become missing in present day.
...you sure about the last point? I'd assume it was rare back then and is still rare, today.
iNfamos Wordz mama de Grasse Tyson rocks! She’s awesome.
iNfamos Wordz I agree except “missing today,” I feel like it may be generally the same. Rather I think a different thing causes the diversity in parents that control and parents that don’t.
@@HaydenTheEeeeeeeeevilEukaryote in present times the majority or pop theme is imitation of others and accepting mediocrity rather than fostering of individual gifts with groomed expectation of greatness.
Ms. Tyson has this humble confidence that is just amazing. I love how unimpressed she is - just straight forward love and kindness. No airs at all
I can see where you get your tenacity from, your MOM. She has a sparkle in her eye's when talking about family. The world needs more people like her.
she's amazing, such a great attitude and personality
🤗
Yes she is a true puertorrican she teach that teacher a lesson. Loved this interview she reminds me of my grandmother. She hasn’t lost her puertorrican heritage
Nowadays they call her Newyorrican.
Wow, I love this! As a Quarter Rican, my mom was also from Spanish Harlem and dad was African American. My grandmother was from San German-Mayaguez, not far from Arecibo. My grandfather was from Curacao. Mom was born in 1925 and they lived at 133 W 112th. She probably passed your mom on the street! lol. She went to Hunter and Columbia! Your mom is such a joy to listen to, makes me miss my mom even more! Thanks for this episode! Reading further is see your mother has gone to Heaven. My sincere condolences to you and your family! 🙏🏽🌹🙏🏽
My parents were supportive in the same way as your Mom and Dad. The first time I had taken my Mom to visit the new laboratory as a grad student she looked around and said “What’s new about this? I knew this is where you would be.” I earned my doctorate degree and she was so proud and not surprised!! 🥰
She spoke Spanish as did I and we learned English together. We lived in Harlem (140th St.) with my Grandmother for a while since Dad was overseas. Neil’s Mom was so right about NYC being a laboratory. Everything was there! Experiences galore. Thanks for sharing your Mom with us!!!
She is a beautiful soul!! And such a rich history; I see why you become an educational ambassador; you came from greatness. 🙇🏽♂️🙇🏽♂️
Neil got his speaking skill from his mom, a wonderful woman.
At 90 years old still that sharp, amazing!!!
Enchanting and Loving! His Mother is Everything, Thank you Puerto Rico!!!🥰💕💕💕💕💕💕

Your mom has such a great sense of humor and is lovely. Charm and Classy.
"Behind every strong man is a strong woman", in this case in front, great mom
Fantastic program Neil. It's 5 am here in Chile, and I'm seeing this sitting on a chair in the middle of a waiting room in a hospital while waiting for my mother to finish their exams because she was feeling unwell. (Not corona, just another problem).
There are so many things that mothers do for their children, and that we don't appreciate until we are older.
Anyway, your mom looks like a really great woman and human being. Much love for you both.
Neil, This is an outstanding insight on how to encourage learning in children. Your Mother and Father are and were inspiring people. Your sister, brother and you must be very grateful to have such encouraging parents. This was a great interview with a great person!
By far my favourite video on StarTalk so far. Mummy Tyson melted my heart when she said, "It didn't have any significance to me but I knew it meant something to you." Fantastic lady.
I have envy for your childhood. Mine was o.k. but as far as being encouraged, l wasn't.
@@mammawlee: Your comment hit me hard. It's only in my adulthood that I began to appreciate what my parents did for me.
Your childhood may not have been full of encouragement, but here you are, today, a paragon of self motivation. Well done, lady!
This rapport between Neil and his beautiful and intelligent mum reminds of me a lot of the relationship I had with my late mum.
When I've been away for a while and returned home to see her, she would be waiting at the porch to hear me shout out to her "hey, you daughter of so and so!", (her father's name) and she would shout back "oh, you son of so and so!" (using my dad's name), and all that would happen even before I got out of the car!! I miss my parents.
As a first generation nyc born Puerto Rican, I am so proud to know Neil and I share the same ethnic background. Great stuff
I mean obviously I been knew he was mix just like most black people not a suprise I am his complection but I am jamaican most of my parents are negroid no mix so it really depends on dna life is weird
black Puerto rican.
Thanks for sharing your mommy with us Neil. Just learned she passed on a few months ago. As I always say no one ever truly dies until they are forgotten.
Beautiful & Adorable Mother. I could listened to her speak all day long🌹
Neil: “born in 1929
Her: “1928...”
IM DEAD 😂😂
neil probably count her age backward and forgot the "half" part xD
For a Puertorican mother who are so over protective, she was so down to earth and wise to give you all opportunities life got for all of you at that time. Beautiful.
What an amazing mother!! She truly created an environment for her children to explore. I love that she went to school as an adult learner. She was able to obtain her undergraduate and Masters degree. She is an example that its never too late.....FYI I cant believe how much she looks and sounds like one of my great aunts! She even has the same wit and philosophy of interacting with children. Seriously, an uncanny resemblance . Blessings and Safety to his mother- especially during this pandemic.
I was a big fan of Neil but now i am a huge fan. His deep love and respect for his mother just pours out of him. Such a strong and wise woman. Dare i say that NDT does not in any way act like a celebrity when in the presence of his mother. He just seems like a timeless little boy growing up, as it should be. Bravo!
Beautiful lady, beautiful soul. I see where Neil got his intellect... Cheers, momma Tyson!
Mama Tyson coming in like a Heavyweight Champion! 👏 👏👏

Having grown up with Neil as his cousin, I can confirm the veracity of my Aunt Toni's narratives --- such wonderful memories! May she rest in peace ❤
This was beautiful. Neil is so much like his mom. They both have this laugh and humour about them. His mom is so sharp. The picture of Neil with his siblings when they were young was very touching. You can tell he came from good stalk.
Neil's mom is awesome. Such a wonderful and beautiful soul. So grateful for this insightful reflection of her life and Neil's life. Best 36 minutes I've spent since quarantined.

You have helped me face some of my fears, taught me many things, and even made me laugh at many moments. Every sentence of these 36min is wonderful!
Neil’s mom is the finest lady that I have ever listened to in my life(apart from my mom). She is one in a million in my generation now. A lady that radiates with love, humour, patience and dedication! As someone who is involved with science at work and often listens to Neil, I will always choose to listen to her rather if I have only one choice at a time!

Wow, wow, wow. I'm scrolling through CZcams and was intrigued by the topic and click played. Listening intensively to you, Neil, getting things wrong, and being corrected by Mama Lyn, you both laughed. It is a joy to see Mother and Son collaborate so sweetly as you interview Mum upon some begging. However, I am glad that you both amicably agreed to proceed. I took so much knowledge and wisdom from you both, which shall cement my relationship with my son. Lastly, as there were many takeaways to walk away from this, the one thing that stood out for me was helping the blind person across the road. Mum says to lead the person, you place their hand on your shoulder to guide them. In closing, my gratitude is to say, " Thank you, and May God continue to bless you both as you serve the world richly." Happy belated Mother's Day. 💐💜🥰💕😘😘💐Monday 11th March 2024.
