It's disturbing how pervasive the misconception of "Lolita" is. That book is a horror story told from the perspective of the monster. He's an emotionally stunted child abuser who destroys his victim's life while romanticising the abuse, and is writing the story from jail after being convicted for murdering a different child abuser out of jealousy. But somehow "Lolita" ended up being synonymous with "adolescent temptress" instead of "child abuse victim", and people quote the damned thing like it's a romance.

I know its not exactly the same thing but i feel like thats what happened with killing stalking. A straight dude whos also a murderer takes advantage of a gay guy whos in love with him and uses him as a mother figure and sex toy. Its a psychological horror. There is a fuck ton of abuse. But its been taken as a bl story. There is no love in it but teens cosplay and ship the characters. Feels icky

@@allstarsrgoneoh my god, please. I cannot tell you how much it bothers me that people portray killing stalking as a BL story. He is a straight, psychotic, but sexually abusive serial killer. He only has sex with that (also mentally twisted) boy because he reminds him of his mother who sexually abused him as a child! like what are these people thinking.. I can't even put into words how extremely unfortunate it is that it became popular among teenagers, because it's really a scarring experience to read.

That`s because people (especially in religious circles) seriously say "she was tempting him" when a young teenage girl is abused. They actually think it`s that instead of a victim being abused.

I have mixed feelings about my wedding. It was very nice and everything, but I was a very closeted trans man so remembering it is very dysphoric. The first person I came out to was my husband after nearly 10 years of marriage; he wasn't surprised and we're very happily still together.
So, the wholesome wedding story is after being married for 12 or 13 years we were going through our big bedroom closet and cleaning it out. My husband pulled out from the very back my wedding dress and asked, "Are we keeping this?" I asked if he would be upset if I didn't want to keep it and he said no, it was fine. Then he shoved it into the trash bag.
I was so relieved; my husband is the best!

The Lolita thing is crazy to me, I would say they must have known about the book, it's a very very famous book, it was adapted to film twice (once by Kubrick, but it's a very bad adaptation, Nabokov hated it) and Nabokov is one of the greatest writer of the XXth century but since you both don"t know it, I'm not so sure anymore...
And I need to add a little more context about the book, it's not a love story at all, it's the story of a pedophile who marries a woman to gain access to her 11 years old daughter and then kidnaps the child, rape her, and travels with her until she escapes. Since she is a child she's clearly manipulated by him. Nabokov write the story as it is, even if it's from the pedo point of view, her suffering is always there, present through the book. But the narrator never acknowledges it, you have to think about what you are reading, always remember WHO is telling the story you're reading. If you're a decent person you understand from the beginning that the narrator is a sick pervert, the opening is quite clear about it, the guy is disgusting.
This book is beautiful and awful at the same time, but what's really crazy about that is that when it was published, a lot of middle age men read it and assumed that it was her fault, since we see her through the pedo eyes, and they were all so misogynistic they couldn't see what was really happening there. Sadly, that is why we use the term Lolita to describe pretty and girly young girls until today.
Nabokow himself was always very clear about the subject of this book, in every interview about it he always said : the book is about a sick pervert man who takes advantage of a child. It's a story about perversion, sickness and domination, and a reminder that the narrator of a story is only telling you what he wants, what he thinks, not always what is really happening, like in real life, a point of view is always just that, a point of view.

    • @rororama3557

@@meaj4556 Unfortunately it says a lot about how the world sees women, even to this day : through the lens of male desire, and the fear of the power this desire gives to women, so much so that they could not see the child in this story, only the man's desire. Its a perfect illustration of the power struggle between these two genders, the constant fear that a lot of men have of losing the power they have over women because of their own lust and lack of control over it. Even in a story as awful as this one, even when the narrator begins his tale explaining that he is attracted exclusively by little girls (from 9 to 12yo if I remember correctly), even if she cries in her bed and try to escape, some men will still conclude that it was the child fault, that she is manipulating him because, well, she's a "woman" and therefore everything she does is meant to attract men. The lollypop imagery is very revealing, when we see a child enjoying a candy, they see a women licking something, and they think about their penises. And this way, it's always our fault, their violence, their need to control us, it's always our fault, because everything we do is for them, so we should be held responsible for their own actions, we provoked it, even at 11 years old, so the violence is justified. It's sick and unfair and the fight to be considered as normal human beings is not over for us.

      @fevre_dream8542 Před 5 měsíci +26

Nabokov is such an excellent writer honestly, but I think it makes a lot of people overlook the core of the work - Lolita is about a sick, twisted, vile pedo and the only reason there's a sympathetic cast over it is because it's from _his_ point of view.

    • @rororama3557
      @rororama3557 Před 5 měsíci +25

@@fevre_dream8542 I disagree. It's a way to make the reader think about what they are really reading, but most people understand he is sick and she is a victim. I remember how shocked and disgusted by him I was (the narrator) the first time I opened the book... And, well, it gets worse through the story. And his disgust for Lolita post puberty ads even more to our own disgust of the guy. I honestly can't understand how anyone could not feel the same. It would never happen with a story with a muderer p.o.v. nobody would say "it's the victim's fault, they provoked it"

The last wedding I went to was my second cousin's. It was held on a beautiful farm in the mountains, in a paddock with a river running by it.
The bride was late, as per tradition. Her sweetheart, a farm-raised young man from our hometown, was fidgeting at the altar with his groomsmen, and breaking out in a beaming smile every few minutes when he remembered who he was waiting for.
And then, coming up on half an hour late, the lady arrived. Elvis Presley started playing out of someone's speakers- "I can't help falling in love with you". The bride began to walk up the aisle, on her father's arm.
The groom turned around. He saw her in the dress for the first time... and that 6 foot tall man in a stetson and cowboy boots immediately burst into tears of joy. Completely unselfconscious tears, running right down his face. Smiling ear to ear. The whole family had known he was the one for years, but that was the moment I knew this was going to be forever.
All the way through the ceremony, he couldn't take his eyes off her. Afterwards, the photographer had to keep telling him to look at the camera.
And all the while, she was smiling right back at him.
There are potential sources of tension in any union. My cousin and her beau are from different religious backgrounds: half the guests were sober vegetarians, the other half (my family) spent most of the night drunk and face-down in chicken wings. The couple have different personalities: the groom is laid back and easy-going; the bride is extremely efficient and organised. They were raised differently: the bride's from a semi-country beach-y/surfer culture; the groom is country all the way through.
All that stuff doesn't have to mean a thing. As long as their love for each other is that openly communicated, they'll find a way to get past anything that life throws at them.

So, I know my hubby would never read this, but even if he does, it's been 2 years, it'll be fine. Just like you, we had to postpone our wedding 2 times due to Covid, and we really were tight on budget, so all the decoration was DIY. The theme was rainbow flag, and my husband sewed tablecloths from different fabrics to resemble rainbow flags.... He spent so much time and effort, no matter what he did they were hideous. He was so disappointed in his own work that he was about to rip them off or burn them in the fireplace, I had to act like I really liked how they looked and told him they were beautiful. Honestly, esthetically they weren't, but to me, that I know how much time he spent on them, they're beatiful.

    Cute wedding story:
My cousin just got married in October, one of the couple's hobbies is swing dancing. For their first dance they had a choreographed swing performance which ended in a dramatic and classic dip-and-kiss move. The parents on both sides also had swing dancing lessons for weeks beforehand so they could do swing for the father-bride and mother-groom dances. They also had their pro dancer friends do a group lesson for anyone who wanted to participate during the dinner. I didn't do the lesson but we always did some swing in school gym class, so I did what I could remember to La Vie En Rose with my aunt (grooms mom). I'm a trans man and she's very supportive so it was kindof a special moment for me to dance as a man for the first time. It was also my first time getting properly drunk and my cousins (both guys) and my uncle were excited for me to let loose and have flex my newfound confidence as a man for the first time, and even though they were also drunk they made sure I stayed safe💙🩵

I'll also leave some happy wedding stuff for Shaaba, because I got married in October!
We had our ceremony at the Renaissance Faire. It was absolutely amazing, they paraded us up from the entrance to the chapel, shouting "HUZZAH! THERE'S A WEDDING!" the whole way. I got to walk with my husband at the front of the parade, and while I am usually very shy about things like this, everyone was so supportive and the parted crowds (who were all just random Faire attendees!) were cheering for us and giving us their blessings as we walked and it was absolutely delightful.
The weather was a little chilly, and had been rainy but was nice the whole time we were out in it - it started raining JUST as I started down the aisle, and then stopped again as soon as our ceremony was over, when we headed over to the reception area.
After our reception, we got to sit in the prime seating area for the Joust, and while our champion ultimately did not win, it was still an amazingly fun experience. After the Joust, we got a personal blessing from the Queen (of the Faire) and it was genuinely one of the happiest days of my life.
Our wedding favors? Little glass jars that my husband hand-made. Etched glass (with his art designs) filled with confetti and little battery-operated tea lights. And about half of them had sets of dice, because several of our guests were (like us) fans of Dungeons and Dragons.
We didn't ask our guests to pay us for anything, because we were already asking almost all of them to fly across the country to be there with us.

Married by their mate who got a license for them, speech went: "If anyone has any objections to these two dirty, dirty lesbians being wed... piss off, you clearly aren't welcome here."
Best wedding I've ever been to, and they've just had their second child 😊

Re Courtney/Nick/Brian - another option is that Courtney and Brian were getting ready for their wedding and found someone giving away wedding decorations from (another) Courtney and Nick's wedding that was supposed to happen on almost the same day. And they thought that it would be a fun joke for their guests to take them and do this.
As clergy, I get to officiate at several weddings a year, and have many wholesome stories. Let me take the wedding/funeral story from here and give it a couple of more wholesome twists from weddings I've had in the past couple of years:
    1) The day before the wedding, the uncle of one of the brides was admitted to palliative care. The brides asked if I could acknowledge this at the start of the ceremony, and work in a short prayer for the uncle.
    2) The bride's father was dying, and the couple had planned to get married at his bedside with their family all around. Unfortunately father died, and what was going to be their wedding day was his funeral instead. The next week, they decided that they wanted to get married anyways - after all, they had the license, and the bride's adult daughter was still going to be in town for a couple more days. And so with 48 hours lead time, they got married under a small gazebo in a local park, with just the bride, groom, 2 witnesses (bride's daughter + a close friend) and the 2 children the couple were in the process of adopting. And me to make it legal 🙂

I have a wholesome wedding story to help heal the damage from this video! Well, actually two.
I did get married during Corona, but it was a TINY affair at the Standesamt (like a courthouse wedding, but in Switzerland). We weren't even allowed to invite his whole immediate family (4 guests total allowed, a photographer, and our 2 witnesses), not to mention that it would've been IMPOSSIBLE for anyone in my family to be there, as borders were still closed. Well, my chosen family decided that they were going to make sure they were there with me in spirit, since they couldn't be there in person, so they contacted my husband without me knowing, sent him money, and he and his mom used that money to pay for my bouquet. He tells me this AS we're walking in the door, and I'm just crying the whole time, feeling the love from a quarter of the way around the world.
Something a little funnier that happened was that we were required to have a translator, as I didn't speak German at the time, but as we got to the "I do" part (or just simply "Ja", in German), I recognize what I'm supposed to do before the translator has a chance to do her thing, and say "Ja". I was really excited to be getting married, ok? The officiant laughed and said that officially, she can't accept my agreement until the translator told me in English what I was actually agreeing to (which I think is a very good rule, all things considered) and we all had a good chuckle as I agreed for a second time and in two languages that I wanted to marry this man.
It's nearly 3.5 years later, and it was still the best decision I've ever made. ♥️

A wholesome story of my parent's broke wedding: They did everything as affordably as they could. They planned just to forgo a reception due to cost. My grandparents on both sides wouldn't hear of it. So the reception was in one of their backyards, and my grandmas got together and made sandwiches for everyone like you'd get at a church function. It was just a backyard party, but it meant so much to both of them that their parents worked together for this reception. There is some evidence that weddings with smaller budget last longer, and I like to think my parents are an example of that.

My theater teacher had a very relaxed, second wedding. Her and her soon-to be husband showed up at the ceremony wearing a dress she made herself that made her look half like a hippie, half greek godess, and a red suit with purple leopard shoes for him.
They were joking through their whole vows and overall having fun. For the reception, every neighbor of theirs brought out a table so the whole street had this massive long table and everyone brought something to eat and drink. Then we put on an excerpt of a comedy we prepared in their garden, someone else did a puppet show and the groom and his musician friends provided music.
Good times, no stress, just merryment.

At my brother’s wedding last March, they set aside a seat for the wedding photographer to sit and eat with the main wedding party and she was blown away at the gesture because it’d never happened before. It wasn’t really a traditional wedding or anything big, just a backyard thing with maybe 50-ish guests, but the photographer was just so touched that they not only had a seat assigned for her, but it was literally right up by the bride and groom so she could chat and enjoy the night with them and the rest of the guests. She was an amazing photographer with such an amazing spirit and personality, and it just gave me the warm fuzzies to see her get excited to be another guest. I don’t go to many weddings (and just got married in the courthouse myself) so I don’t know if wedding photographers usually get to be a part of the reception as well, but it seemed to be something special for her at least!

Most were traveling in groups anyway & we volunteered to pay if needed; only 1 car took us up on the offer. Everything else we paid out of pocket, so we kept things simple. We let nature be our decor. Having looked at the prices for some wedding venues, I can understand the urge to ask your guests to contribute more than what we did. That's part of why we wanted to go with a more budget friendly option - to avoid asking that of our guests. Plus, I feel like places upcharge as soon as they hear 'wedding'.

I (40 m) and my Husband (42 m) had a Hawaiian themed wedding back in July 2010. My family's favorite vacation spot is Hawaii, my parents and sisters have been there countless times I myself have been there 7 times in my life. So my partner and I thought it would be a perfect theme as we both don't enjoying dressing formal and we wanted it to be more of a party vibe.
His family however is very catholic and were all questioning weather they would come to a gay wedding in Canada or not. Long story short they put aside their religion to be with and support their son. I was so happy to have his family come even if it meant doubling our budget.
As soon as my in-laws agreed to come I found out that my mother-n-law likes to take over in planning big events. We were in constant communication and even ended up hiring a wedding planner. ( good thing they also chipped in for the wedding at that point.) Had our ceremony in a plant conservatory (who surprisingly enough had a under the sea theme going.) Perfect! Our reception at a hotel that had a massive inside atrium in the center of it so guests on his side and mine would have a place to crash if they drank to much. I had friends who personally did our photography and DJ, the tables were set with a blue center stripe of cloth over top of the white ones and had bird of paradise flower center pieces.
Another part of the wedding was going to be gifted by my sister and brother-n-law. My slightly older sister ( I have two I'm the youngest of 3 kids) is part of the Polynesian Dance club( she actually owns and runs it now.) she hired the group for the wedding and put on a dance for everyone there. What I didn't know was planned was she by herself did the Hawaiian wedding dance for us. I was in tears and had to give her the biggest hug afterwords.
The wedding went off without a hitch everyone had a great time. we had the Mai Tai drink as our wedding drink and it sold the most out of anything else. To this day from both sides of the family we get told that our wedding was the best they had ever been to. Everyone had an absolute blast! sorry if this has on a little long hope you enjoyed our wholesome wedding story.

I'll share some things from our wedding. We are a couple of non-drinking gamers, who have some people who can have problems with drinking too much. Our solution? We toasted each other with our favorite caffeinated beverage at the time, it was a midday celebration, where kids were celebrated and welcomed, and adults got 2 drink tickets on us. Beyond that, they had to pay. Oddly enough, no drama ;) We also had a friend who repaired video game machines like you would find at an arcade, and, as a wedding gift to us, he set up several in the ball room, so people could play free of charge. I still have some *great* pictures of the littles doing their best at Dance Dance Revolution. Our centerpieces were all games and dice, so people (whom we did not assign seating to, wanting everyone to feel as comfy as possible) could get to know their table mates over a silly game or two. As to the food? We know littles can be picky, so we picked what the hotel called "Stadium food" (Sausages and such, with a Quinoa salad and some other options for our vegetarian guests)

My baba (grandmother) got remarried when I was pretty young (7 to 9 about). She had been divorced, which was extremely rare in our family, and had lived a good majority of her life alone. Obviously as a child I didn't understand what a big step it was for her to remarry, but looking back I'm glad that my childhood ignorance could help. I knew my baba only as Baba. Much like like Mama and Papa I assumed those to be their names. I got separated from my family and was asking for my Baba, only for people to ask what her name was. I didn't know, and I was very upset. Later my mother found me, and I learned that my baba's name was... Rada (joy). She was always very sweet to me and asked me if it was okay she was getting married (on her wedding day so a little as a joke), I told her along the lines "Your name is Joy, so you should have as much joy as you like." She cried and I was confused as a child, but now I know lol
Each wedding is special!, sometimes for better or for worse lol

As a kid I lived close to a church, and there was a tradition to throw candy after a wedding to the kids that randomly show up from the neighbourhood XD
So of course, I went there for a while every saturday or so to get some candy.
One week, I was way to early and arrived when the wedding was about to start, so I sat down on the church's outer wall (it wasn't high) to wait. But the father of the bride saw me and enthusiastically called me to come inside. I told him I wasn't part of the wedding itself, but he didn't cared! XD
So... I just sat there and was part of a wedding of total strangers lol
Also, years later, I was addressed by the leader of our gospel choir. (Outside of the songs, we weren't religious per se, just a choir) I was the youngest member of the choir at the time, yet he came to me and told me that a couple wanted someone to sing at their wedding. (or rather, the SIL wanted to surprise the couple, something along the lines - it's been some decades XD)
Originally, the bride would've wanted "My heart will go on", but the priest forbid non-religious songs, so I was supposed to sing Ave Maria. However, it was so on short notice, that there was no chance studying the song in time (I tried). So in the end, we (the girl on the organ and I) sneakily decided to ignore the priest and when the wedding day came, in the church, I sang "My heart will go on" and "I will ever love you". The priest couldn't do anything about it without destroying the wedding, so he had no choice XD HA!
My mom told me later that when she was asked to sing at weddings, this was a common theme, and she always ignored the priests XD

I've been to probably about fifty weddings in my life. I come from a big family with a lot of cousins, and my aunt owned a wedding decor company that I worked for as a teenager. My favorite wedding, out of all the ones I've been to, was also undeniably the cheapest. It was held in a friend's backyard in late spring. They didn't serve a meal, but they had pretzels and a small business owner with homemade fruit popsicles--so you could have strawberry or watermelon or mango. The bride wore a white sundress with bright pink flipflops, and the groom wore khaki shorts. Instead of a cake, they cut a watermelon into tiers. The whole event had an amazing energy, it was really about the couple and how happy they were, rather than making it about the event. It felt like a new beginning rather than a culmination of their relationship. That's the kind of wedding I want to have.

My cousin just got married last month, he and his wife met in a dance troupe and did an incredible clogging routine the night of their wedding!! They choreographed it just for them, and practiced it just to perform in front of all their families and friends to declare their love for each other, and I thought it was wonderful, definitely my favorite part of their wedding ❤

We got married in a friend's backyard. We had maybe twenty people. We aren't religious so our best friend got ordained just for us and family members each brought a small part of the set up (dad rented chairs, mom bought wedding cupcakes with a mini cake on top to cut, sister brought burgers to grill, etc) we didn't have a registry because everyone pitched in on the ceremony. It was a beautiful day and ten years later we're still in love. There's nothing wrong with a big pricey wedding, but you should be more excited about the marriage, not just the one day ceremony❤

My neice was 3 at our wedding and our flower girl. She had tried practicing with grandma (my mother) and was very confused by the role. So we had them both do it. My mother walked down with her helping her throw the flowers. About halfway down she ran back and started picking them all up and putting the back in the basket 😅 to many giggles from the family. There were still a few left by the time it was my turn but was a hilarious way to start things. She's 16 now... i will have to remind her of this 😂

I was a bridesmaid in one of my childhood friend's wedding. For the rehearsal dinner, the bride and groom asked us to come in pajamas just so it would be more chill and comfy. The bride was wearing an oversized and well-loved TMNT onesie, and when she came down the aisle for rehearsal in her onesie, I looked over and saw the groom had the biggest grin and was ugly crying from just seeing his person walking down the aisle toward him.

When my guy and I got married, we were a small group (20-ish people) of our closest relatives and dear friends, on a cozy touristy boat sailing down the Spree river (Berlin). There was an improvised DJ who tried his best to play some Latin American music (Latina bride, and it ended a hilarious anecdote that wasn't really his fault but we decided that nope, go back to pop please) and even though we couldn't afford an actual wedding cake, we ended up having the most delicious chocolate mousse cake I've ever tasted. Well, maybe it tasted delicious because we were happy.

Wholesome wedding story, my BFF wanted my children (8M, 7M, and 4M) and me to be in her wedding, but she lived out of state and asked me to ask them for me. I called to tell her they agreed, and she asked if I told them she was marrying a woman; I said yes. She asked what they thought, and I said they are much more worried about if they were going to wear something ugly. For months I coached them; whatever the bride wants, she gets; it's her day. When they were about to walk down the aisle with my BFF's 3yr nephew, someone forgot to give the boys the lavender to throw for the bride. The eldest looked around, shrugged, and grabbed his brothers hands, and another boy grabbed the nephews hands. They walked down the aisle holding hands, and everyone said it was the sweetest thing. Including my bff.

Wholesome wedding moments: My moms best friends wedding was absolutely beautiful, but one of the sweetest moments was her husband did a father/son dance with his step father.
Also at my aunts wedding, there was unfortunately a tragedy that occurred during the wedding. My grandfather was watching on live stream when he passed, which was quite sad but those who were with him said he passed as soon as she began walking down the aisle and told her he wanted to walk her down the aisle so he had to go. This meant a lot to her and she had a lovely wedding, having the entire family with her when he passed she said was an exceptionally special moment she’ll always be greatful for.
To finish it with a happy one, at my moms wedding (i was one) apparently i was meant to walk down the aisle but got so excited to see my dad and my grandma i ran down the aisle so the only pictures of it are a tiny blur of a baby and my dad bending down to pick me up.

The Spuds/ Preaches thing actually could be a really cute wedding theme. Neutral pastel tones of peach, yellow and beige (like the outsides of peaches, potatoes and the inner pale yellow yellow of both)
And a menu that incorporated peach desserts, fancy potatoes in the mains or as snacks (spiralled fried potatoes on sticks at the cocktail hour?) And little motifs of a peach and spud on any custom stationary/ favours.
Silly thought, but hopefully wholesome enough to cheer you up

I don't remember much about their wedding, but when my grandma and papaw got married, I was 5 and the flower girl (lol), their whole theme was green. Her dress was green and my papaw's tie was green, when he passed I was given his tie and still have it and have considered the possibility of wearing it for my own wedding, but that's FAR in the future. The reason it all was green is its my grandma's favorite color. To the point we call "lime green" grandma green. My papaw loved my grandma so much he got everything in green because he knew she would love it. His '69 Mustang convertible he painted green for her, their bedroom got painted green as well as their living room, though not in Bright green. I'd bet $1,000 that 80% of her clothes are green because of how he'd just surprise her with random little presents. I aspire to be that type of husband in the future 💚💚
