Ferrari F40 with Lexus V8 TwinTurbo Engine || 750Hp/1200Kg LM Replica Monster

  • This will be a controversial one. It´s Steve Cox´s Ferrari F40 Silhouette and it is a 4.0L V8 Lexus engined Ferrari F40 LM replica built in New Zealand in the early 2000´s as a Passion project.
Still running nowadays, the footage seen here is captured on Leadfoot Festival´s 2016, 2017 and 2018 editions, with this Monster in its ultimate stage of evolution. With around 750Hp from its dry sumped, alloy Lexus Racing engine in Twin Turbochagred form, with said power sent to the rear wheels through a Quaife Six speed Sequential transaxle gearbox, it is a 1200Kg Monsterwith custom designed and built chassis from specially imported tubular steel and pretty much all other bodywork components being custom built in Fibreglass, Kevlar and Carbon Fibre.
It has posted some amazing results throught the years and even its acceleration figures are quite impressive with a 0-100Km/h sprint in 3.2 seconds and a 0-200Km/h in 9.1 seconds giving a proper idea of the kind of fire power propelling this Beast.

Hi everyone. Great reading your comments. Thanks to all those that appreciate the build and for those that don't - you are entitled to your opinion anyway. It is my car and many of you are right - the Leadfoot hillclimb is not what the car is best suited to, and these runs were all on tyres that were 10+ years old as we were just going to have fun. We put new tyres on for 2018 but did not get any video from outside. On a proper track the car will only get to 280kph (yes I have had it there) because none of the tracks here will support much more speed, so that is what we geared it to do. Search CZcams for 'F40 nz' for some more video from when we use to run on the circuits. The car was built from 1997-2002 as a project because I always loved the F40 shape and enjoy building cars. The Lexus was chosen because it is a strong engine and we knew we could get good power out of it. It has a Quaife 6 speed sequential with paddle shift that is the weak link in the car, and that stops us putting the 1000hp that someone has suggested. It is only running 15lb of boost and would take 20, so the 1000hp is very achievable. It has no ABS or power steering but does have traction control. I'm happy to answer questions on this post, but please remember NZ is 12 hours different to Europe time so I may be asleep when you post. Cheers. Steve

.. and the other thing is not everyone can afford a genuine F40, let alone an F40LM. It would be so interesting given the owner/builder Steve's comments how it would be with a stronger gearbox, appropriate race tyres .. AND 1000hp .. as well as some fettling by those used to fine tuning cars like this for the track. Also if no one told me I'd assume this was a real F40, certainly without looking at it close up. Many of the 250GTOs and the like you see racing at Goodwood and similar events are actually 'evocations' built with genuine Ferrari parts for people to race who actually own genuine GTOs, but aren't prepared to risk potentially a US$70m dollar on the track (or perhaps even more than that (one did sell for this privately in 2018, confirmed by Ferrari authority Marcel Massini.)) In the case of F40LMs, in February a very fine one (a two time Le Mans entry, and a car that has actually beaten an F1 McLaren in competition) sold in February 2019 in Paris for just shy of US$5.4m (€4,842,500) .. rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/pa19/paris/lots/r0085-1987-ferrari-f40-lm/740406 .. which is actually pretty cheap compared to a Le Mans spec McLaren F1 .. rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/MO19/Monterey/lots/r0164-1994-McLaren-F1-LM-Specification/792832 .. CRAZY !!! You too could possibly build a car like Steve's .. never say never !!! :-))))))) ...

Makes a lot of sense, I think. The engine's more reliable than Ferrari, and although it doesn't sound quite right, the LM look probably throws most casual observers off. Personally, I'd have painted it one of the race team colour schemes, but again, it looks the prototype/racer part. Very clever!

I think the only reason it doesn't sound right is the fact that it doesn't have a flat-plane crank , which gives Ferrari V8's their very distinct sound. I'm curious what the donor was because it's proportions are almost just right aside from the the wheel stance.

I consider myself kind of a purist when it comes to Ferraris, but consider the following:
    - V8
    - Mid-engine, RWD
    - Twin-turbo
    - Output somewhere north of 700 horsepower
    - Weight in the ballpark of over 2300 pounds
It's a miracle this guy could build a replica this close to the original's specs with a totally different engine that's a little over 30% bigger than the original. So if this replica is being flogged like a Ferrari and placing well like a Ferrari, then to me this is a Ferrari.
