SAHB - Sensational Alex Harvey Band Schwechater Hof, Vienna 25. Jan. 1982 Alex Harvey died 2 weeks later on the 4th of February 1982 Copyright Videokurtl
What a great find this is. No click tracks here. No lip syncing, or pre recorded backing tracks. Just straight in your face loud raw rock n' roll. The way it should be. Thank you for posting this video, and keeping the Alex Harvey legacy alive!!!!🤘🤘👍
This is Sad, Super Sad ... but what a legacy Alex left, & to all who saw him with SAHB in all his glorious pomp something that lives front & centre in yer heed. RIP Hero.
Extract from: THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY (John Neil Munro, 2002) (...) when the moment was right he could still summon up some of the old magic. A bootleg video of the Electric Cowboys playing in Vienna can still be bought at record fairs, and although it’s a very poor recording from the crowd, it’s a snapshot of Alex playing live near the end of his life. Throughout the 95-minute tape, Alex looks seriously under the weather. At times he seems to be in a trance, smiling sweetly out into the small audience. On other occasions he grabs his guitarist or bass player in an emotional hug. Then he has extreme difficulty getting his own guitar plugged in. When he finally manages to do so, he drops his plectrum. With anyone else the whole debacle would be an embarrassment but somehow the affection of the audience and the band members towards Alex pulls him through. The band open with a blistering ‘Faith Healer’ before playing lengthy jams on a couple of new songs - ‘Snowshoes Thompson’ and ‘Flowers Mr Florist’- to cover up for the fact that Alex had missed his cue and is wandering around aimlessly backstage. A slovenly ‘Delilah’ sees Alex entertaining the roadies by taking advantage of an inflatable doll at the side of the stage. He introduces a new song ‘The Ballad of Billy Bolero’ by saying he wrote it for his friend Clint Eastwood. When some of the crowd laugh, Alex tells them ‘I’m no fuckin’ jokin’!’ The old showstopper ‘Framed' is also peppered with expletives before Alex at last gets his act together and does a passable impersonation of Marlon Brando in The Godfather. Things get a bit silly during ‘Gang Bang’ when Alex tries to get the docile audience involved, inviting around 15 of them up on stage - where they stand around looking bemused and wasted. The drunken ringmaster eventually remembers he has company and they all go into a huddle to sing the chorus. The concert ends with Alex making painfully naïve - if well meant - comments to his Austrian fans about the Nazi occupation of their country during World War II. By now Alex has given up any pretence of singing in tune, and the whole affair is a glorious mess, even though the audience seems to enjoy the spectacle. Even if live concerts were increasingly hit-or-miss affairs, Alex still was hooked on touring and performing. Janet Macoska recalls speaking to him prior to his final tour of Europe. Alex told her that he was off the booze and he sounded in good spirits and genuinely enthused about his latest band, asking the photographer if she thought they would do well in the USA. The Christmas before he died, he travelled to Scotland to visit his parents and his older son. Alex junior was by now starting to play a bigger role in helping his father and he worked alongside management to set up tentative plans for an Australian tour that would have gone ahead in the spring or summer of 1982. Sadly it was never to happen - within a matter of weeks Alex Harvey would be dead.
@@Ledbetty1 I wrote a letter to Alex Harvey every day for nine years. Many of his decisions were based on the ideas in those letters. Even his last single release was prompted by me saying that his voice was similar to Bob Marley's. I was 22 when he died. He said I was his favourite writer.
