Farewell to First's Scrapped Buses

  • Farewell to First's scrapped buses.
I created this video to show the waste of buses we more than often have in the UK. I was showing the importance of how the majority of them get left in scrapyards when, there was nothing massively wrong with them. They were tired, after several years of service but nonetheless they were far better than the majority of buses in smaller UK fleets.
My conclusion is not that First are a bad company: my conclusion is that many, many buses are withdrawn and scrapped very early by bus operators and I think people should be reminded that they do have to go somewhere.
PLEASE NOTE: I am aware I have used other people's photos in this video. None of my videos are monetized and I do not make any money off CZcams. All credit goes to the original photographers.
Disclaimer: I have nothing against First or any other companies. I just think it's sad how many buses go to waste.

I drove a bus for 12 years, usually a short Marshall or Plaxton bodied dart, it's funny they all have different characters and I always think it's so sad to see them scrapped, all the people that have ridden on them, all the different stories they could tell, I'm not sure why, with all the homeless, some could not be converted and put on a piece of land as temporary accommodation, better than sleeping rough every night and cheaper than building a hostel.

In New Zealand, we still recycle/resell buses 40-50 years of age. So I don't know for the UK. But we also have fleet age requirements, and most company just bang their old fleet onto school fleet then another operator until unable to be repaired/outdated.

I'm with everyone who agrees that scrapping a vehicle just because it's old is wrong! All classics and legendary buses and coaches from many years ago, just scrapped without a second thought and lying on a scrap heap to rot.The Dennis Darts, Volvo Ailsas, MAN ALX 300/200s, Leyland Olympians and Titans etc etc. rotting whereas a sensible alternative would be to encourage private or local community ownership! Us Bus Nuts and Lovers could take those darling gems away from the scrapheap and give them a new lease of life and usage. Do them up, get them fixed and give them all the TLC they deserve! What a waste and it breaks my heart to see them there. Agree? I also suspect the scrapyards aren't doing much scrapping because you always see more and more vehicles added onto the already ageing pile.

I'll say one thing: sadly not every bus can enter preservation, and a bus has to come to end of it's life at some point. The point I was making is that many of these 'old buses' are far better than the newer ones, and had many years ahead of their lives. Some of the darts I go on are still top condition, although others that have not been maintained sadly are starting to rot already

Believe it or not, I’ve been on the R220GFS as late as 2018/19. Can’t remember the years exactly but I clearly remember being so shocked to see the buses taking me home when they were driving alongside the newest models. It wasn’t even a one off I actually went on them twice then never saw them again. Brought back memories because it’d been 8 or so years since I saw or even thought about that bus. So difficult to believe after watching this video but I hope someone else shares this experience.

Leaving aside the viability of public transport, post covid19, surplus vehicles are probably scrapped to prevent them being run by potential competitiors. Though many of these poor old buses simly don't comply with current regs vz emissions, accessibility etc and would not be worth the cost of upgrading them.
It IS a wicked waste of resources but that's the sort of society we live in.

I would like to annouce some good news. That after almost 10 years of doing nothing except sitting on top of other buses in a scrapyard, one of these buses may return to roads.
I have recently been in contact with the Dudley scrapyard, where mentioned Marshal-Bodied Dennis Dart LN51DWX lays dormant, and have expressed intrest in buying it.
Yes, I'm aware that it hasn't moved an inch in nearly 10 years and yes, I'm also aware that the bus itself is either just under or just over 20 years old. But I was always a fan of Marshall Darts, And if my purchase is succsesful, not only would it mean the bus would be brought back into service in after almost 10 years of decomission, it would be the First (No Pun Intended) sighting of a First London bus in roughly the same amount of time. They stopped operating a year or two after the Dart was withdrawn.
I would love to recomission this bus so please wish me the best of luck in my purchase

I’m happy to announce that after rigorous trial and error, the now 22 year old bus was lifted from the scrapyard and at the start of this week took its first journey in well over a decade at the start of this week (Monday 14th August 2023) as a test run, and as of today (Saturday 19th), has officially entered preservation status, where it’s primary purpose will be for my own private use, and it may also become available for private hire and/or heritage events in the near future. Sadly though, it can never return to public service, this is partially due to the buses age, and primarily due to the fact that I flat out refuse to pay more than what I did for the bus in general for somebody to come along, strip out the original engine and install one that complies with ULEZ regulations.
What also occurred to me during the bus’s test journey is that it last operated on Route 309, which now mainly uses Optare Solo’s, most of which are ever so slightly older than LN51, talk about a downgrade 🙄
