  • From buses as old as a Leyland Atlantean, to as new as an Hybrid Enviro 400MMC, prepare for an interesting one!
Here I am invited to go look around a few Bus Scrap yards, and for the privacy of the yards, I will refrain from mentioning where they are. I was joined by Chris Lewis here.
To all the new Subscribers, thankyou for the support recently it is much appreciated.
If you would like me to speak in some future videos then as always do leave some feedback down below, but I hope you enjoy this as I put a lot of work into it.

The hybrid E400MMC you saw was Stagecoach London 12372 which hit a tree in Woolwich last year that obviously sustained serious front end damage that took out the whole cab into to pieces and the chassis was damaged in the process so it was deemed as a write off.

That's one of the biggest reasons MMC's ripped off by Woolwich casually thrown down from last year out on a route 122. Although 16 reg softened with low branches on the high road.

My local bus company down here in Kent run plenty of buses of this age, although they are slowly getting newer ones in thier fleet.
One of my regular rides is a 05 reg Dennis Dart Plaxton Pointer SLF 8.5m, which unfortunately is currently off the road waiting a repair to the fan i believe.

It is ashamed to see things being abandoned or scrapped but visiting a place like that is just kind of cool and eerie. Whether it be this place, remains of an old castle, or even the burnt down Brighton Pier, its just such a cool feeling, comment below if you know what I mean!

Buses get accident damage or as they get older they become more expensive to run and take more expensive fuel . As expenses rise ticket prices would have to do the same to cover costs . No.passengers would agree to that .

The Optare Solo, 47258, I drove it's sisters when they were brand new to the Dunfermline yard of Stagecoach Fife. Lovely driving machines, felt like a big van. Always cooking their coolant though, had to top them up at every visit to the station!
47258 was mostly seen kicking around Perth. No idea what happened to her to end up in a scrapyard so early. Maybe the constant overheating?

They had to replace pretty much their entire fleet there not long ago (pretty much all '72 plates now) after the sheer number of passenger complaints and inspection failures they'd been getting as up to that point most of them were worn out cast-offs from other depots sent up here basically to die.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the sense in not breaking up the majority of decommissioned buses almost as soon as they arrive at the knackers yard? I can see the value in holding onto more modern vehicles that have had to be scrapped through accident damage or a major mechanical failure but surely the rest could just be stripped of parts likely to be needed for vehicles of the same age to keep them on the road a bit longer. Do the big operators have a replacement policy based on age or mileage or is it more subjective and based on the condition of each vehicle. Do they deliberately take some vehicles of a particular model out of service to cannibalise for spare parts for the rest of the fleet. It seems that London buses and those in large metropolitan areas are replaced sooner than those operating out in the sticks by independent companies. That said most of the Arriva buses running in my neck of the woods appear be 15-20 years old. Besides possibly had replacement engines, gearboxes etc would they have had a full refurbishment and repaint during their lives? Presumably every bus goes through a very exacting MoT so is this the time when the axe falls?

Yeah, someone else mentioned that they've never seen a bus with seatbelts, so I replied that's what it's been used for, usually when schools hire them I believe.

WTF? 😲 A few plain Scania's (not sure if they're Omnicitys or Omnilinks?) then lots of Dart Pointers in Beachball MKI, MKII plus one in training livery too. All could have been sold for preservation or to a smaller operator and kept on the road! 😟 A scrapped MANviro! 😭💔

Can't say I'm particularly sad to see those horrible Solo's in the scrap yard. Awful things. Obviously designed by someone who had never driven a bus before. The Darts were my favorite. Easy to drive with simple controls laid out with the driver in mind.
