- čas přidán 6. 08. 2024
- Long before the mystery of The Zodiac killer, there was the hooded assailant that roamed Texarkana and terrified a town right after World War II. There was, of course, a movie made on these tragic and terrifying events in 1976, 30 years after the true story happened, but how accurate did the filmmakers get with their depiction? Board up your windows and make it home before dark as we find out WTF REALLY Happened to The Town That Dreaded Sundown!

These 70’s flicks are bizarre in a way they randomly insert comedy in some scenes
Yea like that part in the exorcist where the girl's head spins around 😆
@@hchoe741 hahahaha!!! Awesome. That slapstick scene with the crucifix cracks me up every time as well.
Like the music in Last House on the Left
Wow revolutionary
Like the Kung fu scene in pieces
These 1970s horror movies were crazy.
The best and the 80's best decades in human history.
Yeah, I know all about this, being that it happened only 20-25 minutes from where I live. My dad believes Yuell Swinney, (I'm sure I misspelled his name), was the phantom killer, but I'm unconvinced. I love this movie & it's exciting to know that it was filmed not far from my home, even though, it was before I was born. I remember seeing the VHS at a local video store, when I was a kid, & looking on the back to see that this was a film set in Texarkana, Texas, & I excitedly showed this to my parents, who, of course, already knew all about it. Growing up here, Texarkana was the place to go for fun, as there's never really been any hangouts, in this area. At least not in my lifetime. The last female victim in the film was played by none other than Dawn Wells. It's awesome knowing that she was actually in Texarkana, though, from what I've discovered over the years, many famous people have come through Texarkana. Sadly the 2014 remake was not filmed in Texarkana, which was a huge disappointment for me. Charles Pierce is still a personal hero of mine. Hey, would you guys please cover the legend of Boggy Creek, soon?
Interesting. I too grow up near the area. I remember my history teacher told me about when they were filming about the first one. This was back before the interstate was made. I remember he said that they blocked up a long line of traffic. It was interesting to have Mary Ann from Gilligan's island to play as one the victims. The other one they did was completely terrible. I remember how interesting it was they was filming near the area and got some actors to play the film.
Your dad would be correct
you from new boston?
I love how the phantom kicked the door in, then raised his arms over his head, which made me think he was going to throw an ax or something, only to then aim his gun at the woman.
I loved that
This movie is terribly underrated and the Phantom Killer is a terribly underrated killer. I love both Town That Dreaded Sundown movies
I actually really liked this movie it was so creepy because based on a true story
I think this movie was the inspiration of Jason Voorhees look in Friday The 13th Part 2 (1981)...
love this one, its historical context and real life events and its impact on jasons look in part II
Ye they gave Jason one eye hole to avoid the lawsuit
Thats exactly what I said.
1946, the year after WWII ended...it leads me to believe this may have been a recently returned soldier suffering some kind of PTSD or untreated mental illness. This being the 40s, there was nowhere near the kind of therapy for the mentally ill there is today. Just my speculation.
Facts
Good theory as any other.
Or the war made the Phantom like killing
It was an unregistered visitor. Thanks a lot, demacrats !
8:43 LOL!! You can actually see the camera crew on top of the passing train car 🤣🤣🤣
I’ve seen this a million times and never noticed that!! 😂
That always cracked me up😂
I didn't realize this movie came out during the 70s. I thought it came out more along the timeline of Friday the 13th part 2. Another movie with a bag headed antagonist.
My family has driven through Texarkana several times during road trips. It's a good place to get meatloaf, and that's about it.
The Texas Ranger was based on the real guy M T LoneWolf Gonzalez . He came to Texarkana but did absolutely nothing but interviews and take credit for other officers investigations
Gonzuallas* The Arkies "requested" his help, and he was legally granted because one murder happened in Bowie County (the Texas side). You're kicked off the case for illiteracy of opinion, and grammar.
Keep passing this over on Prime. Maybe I'll have to give it a shot on some stormy night.
I saw this movie in my hometown theater when it came out. I was a kid. It scared the hell out of me. I tried to watch it again years later & couldn't do it.
Absolutely loved the 1970s version of this movie. I never saw the remake, but this is one I go back to every now and again. Great video. Crazy after the woman who survived getting shot in the face and lived.
This OG is a good film, no doubt, but the sequel/reimaging is a top notch horror film that you should cheek out. I just upgraded my dvd of it to the bluray. I like it a lot more than the OG, though the OG is still a dang good film.
Check out the songs "Town that dreaded sundown" by BLOODY HAMMERS (2014) and "night of the phantom" by LARRY & THE BLUE NOTES (1965).
Probably one of the best movie titles!
7:43 - yes, that IS Mary-Ann from Gilligan's Island!
Is this the first movie where someone got killed with a trombone? I remember that scene and being stunned and comically perplexed at the same time.
First? You mean there were more?
Peeping tom have a similar kill
She didn't actually get killed with a trombone. She was shot. I know exactly where her body was found. I actually live in the neighborhood where it was found
I remember watching this and the sound was very poor - Dawn Wells was in it along with Ben Johnson so that is a plus. Reading stories about this no one knows the identity of the killer and he was never shot as was depicted in the film.
Maybe he was a batshit crazy moral crusader. A precursor to Jason Voorhees. And we know how much he hated premarital sex.
It’s funny you say that because the hood Jason Voorhees wears in Friday the 13th 2 was inspired by the Phantom Killer
I love the format of this video! The movie seems great too, thanks for the video essay on this
I love this movie , I watch it all the time on CZcams
The narrator in the film sounded like Peter Thomas (Forensic Files narrator).
🙋🏾♂️ I remember this movie, I was a kid when I watched it. I believe that the killer was a WWII veteran who was shell shocked or just enjoyed killing.
I could watch a hour video on this movie.
I would love to see a historically accurate movie.
Don't forget that Boggy Creek also gained notoriety when it featured on Mystery science theatre 3000.
That's how I first became aware of it.
Cheers
And even more recently, its mention on the popular TV shows, Monster Quest and Finding Bigfoot.
I am a big fan of this movie and Charles B Pierce's Legend Of Boggy Creek 1972. His family has restored Legend and is so much better with great sound and picture quality. I would to see both of these as a double feature at a Drive-In theatre like when they were released back in the early 1970s. The documentary style makes it really interesting and gives it a authentic feel...
Good video, one of the reasons I love CZcams
The bluray looks amazing
I grew up in Texarkana my whole life. Visited the sites. My great grandfather owned a lot of land back then on the south state line area where one of the murders accused. People of Texarkana forget about it now but if you do know about it then even now walking the areas around morning or sundown has a gloom to thos day. Tk was booming town toll that happened. That affected the town it never really took off anymore after that
we always thought it was Bo gee creek, at least thats what people said, anyway you are a expert story teller and i love your videos, keep up the great work.
Shortly prior to the beginning of the film production, Dawn Wells who played “Helen Reed”, contacted the actual woman Wells character was based on, if she could meet up with her for a conversation but unfortunately was turned down.
Good one, Mr.Jo. Andrew Prine claims he wrote the ending because they didn’t have one scripted. It would be interesting if this could somehow be confirmed by someone involved with the movie who is still alive (not many of them, I know.)
Almost the American equivalent of
Jack The Ripper.
Just watched this movie yesterday. Great movie
I picked this to watch one night assuming it was a vampire movie. Imagine my surprise.
Yes, it’s a true story tho the movie took some liberties. I’m from Texarkana and grew up knowing the story. Have had people from up further north tell me the movie scared the hell out of them. Me? Not so much. In fact, I laughed all the way through it . Charles Pierce is the bumbling deputy who obviously needed driving lessons. He cracked me up with the silliness. I knew the story already so most of my attention was on him. The Legend of Boggy Creek? Yep, I remember it well. I was in the 5th grade and it made front page news in the Texarkana Gazette for months. Had us kids terrified. Try to go camping with a bunch of Girl Scouts after that. Yeah, had a couple of teenage guys scare the hell out of us that night scratching on our windows and stuff.
I like the fact that the movie had a documentary-style feel. I think it's big mistakes were its botched attempts at comedy and unnecessary changes to the real-life murders just for "shock" value.
The narrator on this movie sounded like the narrator for "The Invaders" (1967)....
there are some things that are not in the public record about this case. first the cops did shoot at and hit the phantom killer. my mom worked for a very well respected doctor in texarkana and he told her about removing a .38 bullet from one of the city leaders who showed up on his doorstep in the middle of the night. it was never reported.
If you see “based on a true story”, it’s most likely fake as hell with a small dash of truth.
The story could make an excellent film in the style of IN COLD BLOOD (1967).
This is the opening of Zodiac
Ben Johnson from The Last Picture Show to this?
Isn’t this the same guy that made Legend of Boggy Creek? Seems similar in style .
Yeah, it was the same guy.
Dam good movie!
The killer uses a revolver with a silencer. Lol.
and a trombone with a knife attached
I still don't understand why the remake decided to keep the trombone scene. It doesn't make sense and it's corny.
Ay bro im from here and i don't even fucking know what happened he was just never seen again but they use to play the movie during Halloween at the park
👍🏻
🤘🍻🤘
Yeah the train scene really happened. They've got it on film.
Isn't this the part of the U.S. where guns are openly carried by everyone?
So this movie was based around a true story about as much as texas chainsaw massacre was.
It's a lot closer to a true story than Texas Chainsaw, since there really was a Phantom Killer that stalked Texarkana after WW2, but it takes a lot of liberties with how the victims were killed.
They’re based on the same story, I believe
@@DocBree13 Texas Chainsaw was VERY loosely inspired by the murders of Ed Gein, but is overall a complete work of fictional. Town that Dreaded is more akin to From Hell or Zodiac, a movie that weaves fiction and theory around a real-life series of serial killings (in this case, the unsolved Texarkana Phantom Killings).
The town that dreaded sundown...based in Chicago or Houston. Ha!
Aaaaaaaaargh! 🤪
This is one of the reasons I hate movies that say based on a true story. Yes, it's true, people died, so the director can get by with that. Movies should say Loosely based on a true story.
Sundown towns though out the country no black after night
I don't believe in Zodiac signs.
Why is it like a zodiac killer has nothing to do with the real victims in the movie they’re using a completely sex and race 🤷🏻♀️
