Hand drill fire making.

  • Using the hand drill for fire making has been a journey I have enjoyed for the last two years.
Exploring all the techniques just fascinates me.
I was first introduced to the hand drill in my younger years when I lived in Namibia and part of my playground was the Bush.
But nothing could be more different and more difficult than reviving a skill I once new in England. The whole process in my mind seemed to me like getting on a bike and just riding it again, how wrong I was to think that this journey would be a easy one.
Failure after failure just made me more aware that friction fire in a wet damp and humid country like England required more then just hopping on a skill I learned in my teen years.
There was so many more individual materials that were needed in order to achieve success.
Type of woods, tinder, bark and even fungi all combined together with a lot of determination the skill started to evolve and the whole process started to get easier.
That first ember was celebrated with the biggest internal smile and joy. I was officially infatuated with primitive fire. There is that one thing that each individual person want to achieve in this journey of bushcraft or wilderness skills and for me it was the hand drill. The whole process from harvesting the materials to getting that flame alive from a birds nest where the seed was planted as a little weak smouldering ember. This journey has not come without its failures, disappointments or even injury’s, and as much as it feels like I have achieved something great, I have to acknowledge that it was not all down to me. I learned by watching others, reading books, watching CZcams and talking to people that are interested and knowledgable in primitive fire skills.
As a result of my journey in bushcraft I have met and have established friendships with people I have come to respect. We may learn from others and we may grow but we should always give credit to those who we have learned so much from. And in a way to give back seems the right thing to do, to share a piece of knowledge is by far one of the most valuable things one can do.

Awesome video, I still find the hand drill more appealing to learn, i can't keep the bow drill going for more than a few seconds before it flies off...

Thanks Mike, it’s not easy to learn but once you get the technique things get easier. It was awesome to meet you and hope we can meet up again. We having a gathering soon up in the northwest so keep your eyes peeled and it will be great if you can make it. ATB Alex
