Great video, long time believer on having multiple sources of starting fires. Have to ask, your custom camp knife shown in this video- are they for sale?
I've got fat wood but I use bacon grease soaked paper towels that I put the bacon on after frying it. Those are normally thrown away. I roll them up and cut them into about half inch wide spirals. They burn for about 10 minutes, I think. I've never timed it so I'm not completely sure about that time.
I'm 64 now. When I was a kid, I used to go out into the woods with friends and show them how to find fatwood. The main thing that always got a chuckle from them and helped them to remember was I told them to look for woodland sharks. Fins that stick up out of the ground. I still have a bunch of firestarting necklaces that I made. I'd take a piece of fatwood about the size of your thumb and at least 3 inches long, drill a hole in one end and run paracord through it. Then I would take a little cheap dagger or knife that you could wear around your neck and add it to the paracord. The last thing is the ferro rod. You can find the small ones everywhere there is camping stuff. A 3" long and 3/8" diameter rod with a hole in the end works perfect. After that, a couple of slip knot tied over the other string on both ends and wallah! And adjustable firestarting necklace. I've given them for birthdays, Christmas and just whenever I felt like it to people that I knew would appreciate the value. A great, cheap gift that has immense value and lasts for years. I still make them to this day. You can get quantities of the little knives and small ferro rods on ebay for ridiculously cheap. Hope someone out there can use my idea to better their life. Be blessed and respect life, nature and each other! Edit: I forgot to mention, I have also made throwing sticks and clubs with fatwood. This eliminates two birds with one stone, so to speak... A hunting and self-defense weapon as well as an awesome source of fire making material in one item. Trust me, you do NOT want to get bonked with a fatwood club! ;-)
The way I go is the metallic pencil sharpeners... they're made out of magnesium, that's lightweight and a great firestarter, plus they make great shavings... they're everywhere in my bags... everywhere in the world... I provide man-made things... I let Nature provide the natural...
Nice trick brother.. I just picked up a 6pk on Amazon. For the weight and size , why not add to every kit... It's rare I get turned on to new stuff.. thanks man
You are a real Boy Scout (hope that’s not offensive to you). Wish I were watching this as a preteen vs seeing my last sunsets. The information you provide fantastic & necessary. Even if the lights never go out these skills give so much confidence & usefulness -backyard, camping, hunting, vehicle breaks down on a forest road. Hope your family is healing fully. How bout a video of your wife making fire & shelter with pain & bad leg or the child urpping doing the same.
I carry a pocket rasp in my back pack. It is a tool that doesn't cost much and it's a tool you could let a fellow outdoorsman use to make shavings instead of a knife. Also, it captures the shavings inside.
It's a very nice version of that style of tool. Zero doubt about that. I personally would, as I do with students, call that a backup as it is no different that a modern lighter in most ways. "Fire starting skills" are the only ones that will "last forever," as the more fluid, functional and familiar you are with starting a fire from scratch without modern tools "the way" generally becomes moot...
I love that golden goodness. I have enough to last me and my kids for a long long time. But now, thanks to you, I have another project. You really need to stop giving me these ideas. My wife is getting really pissed.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I have made one exactly like that in the past, and would like to share or recommend an upgrade to your idea, this modification I did because the way we did, we end up losing a small part of the ferro, the part that is embedded inside the fatwood handle. The idea for the modification came because of a Doan Magnesium bar, instead of using the fatwood as a "back handle" I tried instead using it as the magnesium bar, fatwood on the length of the whole ferrocerium bar, the only down side from your design is the gluing of the ferro to the fatwood, it cannot be done only using the resin from the fatwood, it needs a better type of glue like an epoxy and the drilling needs to be done all the way through the piece and have the fatwood cut after to leave the perfect concave groove so you can glue the ferro bar. Thank you for reading and hope you could understand my broken down english as it is not my first language, but as your fellow woodsman I had to share this modification with you as it helped me when carrying it, storing inside the pack, pocket or belt, easier to remove shavings from it, and uses every little bit of your ferrocerium bar. (Also if you work with leather as I do, to make a sheath for it is a lot easier) Again thank you for sharing you knowledge with us, may God bless you and your family, all the best to you! Cheers and have a great Sunday.
Wszystko ok, też korzystam z tego jako rozpałki, tylko taki duży wałek jest dość ciężki i niepraktyczny. Lepszy byłby mniejszy lub mniejsza tłusta gałązka luzem do oskrobywania.
For decades, I have always used BIC Lighters and I don't even have to explain why because it's too obvious.... I keep a couple in my van, a couple in my backpack and in my tool box, and a case of them at home.... With that said, I did buy 1 Magnesium Fire Starter that I keep in my backpack in the extreme rare case my 2 BIC Lighters stored in the backpack fails for some reason.... So far, I only used the Magnesium only once in a practice test, and it lit with just 2 strikes, and I never used it again in roughly 25 years, but since it never expires, it will remain forever in my backpack.
Possibly. I recently sold a batch of machetes. Once I streamlined the process, it wasn’t so bad. I thought about making 20 or so of these fire starters and selling them as well. I’ll keep everyone posted if I do.

Always nice to see a like-minded! Fatwood is my favourite Firestarter for years now, the only way for me to start my oven!

Woodland sharks. Love it!

You have to hunt high and low for the magnesium version. I finally found some online at a fabric type hobby store and ordered 5.

@marvinbrock960 Amazon my man.. They may have just added them but they have pleanty.. cheap too

Great idea!
I’m in 😃
Awesome comment!
One more good fire starter learn something new everyday from you

BG makes one😉
SMITH'S (of Arkansas sharpener Co.) has a small fire kit with a rasp .

I do love those fire-starters that you made us. You never seize to amaze me
Praying your knee gets better soon !
Hello from Oklahoma! Love me some fatwood! Some people around here call it lighter knot. Fun project. Thanks for the video! Good Stuff.
Thanks for watching!
Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Good philosophy, no matter what the subject.
Truth!
Cant have too much knowledge. This was a good refresher !
Great idea, i now have another use for a pinetree that just fell in the my yard .👍🏻
Go for it!
Many thanks. Feeling confident in finding some now
EXCELLENT IDEA! Thanks.
It is also like the BIG log chained to the bathroom key at the gas station -- it's not likely to "walk away".
Excellent idea my friend 👍
Awesome show on how too, thanks
Outstanding one of the best videos I’ve seen
Thank you very much
Dual purpose things are good things 👍

Ha! Glad I can help.
That shot of Maggie from the opposite side of the bike, peeking through between the pine knot and the seat got my sub!
Ahahahah. She’s the true star of the show! Thanks for subscribing

Love to watch and see the Bushcraft.... and it's nice to know you're one of the few that still have dinosaurs on their land now a days. Ax
I just bought a few rods to do this same thing with. Great minds, and all that...
Thanx
You know it!
Awesome fire starter Tganks for a great idea👍
Anytime!
I think I’m going to make one. 👍🏽
Go for it!
I put mine into a small piece of maple. Think I will remove and change to fatwood.
I just watched your episode on Call to the Wild. Maggie may was a superstar, so cool!
Thanks. Yes, she is! She let it get to her head
We ran out of anything everyday. Nice backyard mate.
Really great info.....thank you. Oh, and PLEASE put some grease on that vice screw. It is not happy.
Ha! Will do.
Silver birch bark is available always and an excellent fite starter also. I have a nice bagful that always comes in handy
Great tip!
I've never seen a Birch tree.
Awesome
Genius!!!
your dog probably trying to herd the cars.
That's a ittle bulky for EDC, but great for demo's.
Yeah, it would be unpleasant in the pocket.
Good video, thanks for sharing YAH bless !
Awesome idea
Thanks
See ya on the next one

Nice!
Thats how it goes in my house hole too. When it rains it pours
If you made it a little bigger, say the size of a bowling ball you could hand it down to several generations……😂
It would be nice to live in area were you could fine fat wood
It’s some pretty great stuff!
No pine trees where you are?
hope your wife heals up soon
Fatwood is king
That's really cool. Is it just pine trees that you can use to do that or would that work with cedar trees?...just wondering
I don’t think cedar will work for this.
Ferro rod doesn't like moisture, mine disintegrated in my damp shed, Wonder how it will react to the pine resin over time
So far so good. This one has been in my truck for months.
Please show some love to your vice and give it some oil.
Ha!! I greased it up not too long after this video.
Is possible long time survival?
Can you tell me about your bike from the beginning of your video?
It is made by VTUVIA
Can this dry out after a while once exposed to the air?
I don’t think so
Did I see "chicken of the woods" mushroom on that log?
I do t think so. I’ll have to look.
How 'bout a link to that fero-rod? Thanx
😆👍♥️
A pencil sharpener works good to make shavings.
Would you consider making a Ferro rod like this for me?
Possibly. I recently sold a batch of machetes. Once I streamlined the process, it wasn’t so bad. I thought about making 20 or so of these fire starters and selling them as well. I’ll keep everyone posted if I do.
@@ONThree I'd like to buy one with a really big handle like the one you built on the video, if or when your interested. Thanks.
Too big/cumbersome. I make the same, but they'll fit in yer pocket.
I make those too. I like to have one jumbo in my bag
Carry both, big one in travel bag, pocket one in pocket, just where they work best.
Bic lighters are cheap.....
Agreed!
