Ex Multis Ad Unum - Restoring A Split Painting - Narrated

  • When a painting is catastrophically damaged often the assumed choice is whether or not to save the piece. For the conservator it is not a question of if or can the painting should be saved, rather it's how to save it.
In this video Julian Baumgartner of Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration in Chicago shares how a painting of Mary that had been split into four pieces is fully conserved and restored. Using both traditional and modern approaches, archival and fully reversible materials, slowly but surely the piece is saved. All of the work is stable and can be removed in the future if ever so desired.
One of the challenges that the conservator often faces is before being able to embark upon the work of restoring the painting the old conservation attempts and materials must first be addressed. That is, before the "do" comes a lot of "undo." Unknown materials and motives can be frustrating and difficult to address yet with experience and resources these can be overcome.
This is the narrated version of the original video. Many of the questions that were asked in the CZcams comments section are addressed here.

He’s good at finding information on whatever he wants to duplicate quickly and efficiently, whether it be a paint style, shoe style, or design engraved on a very rare edition of antique music boxes. I would never have believed it possible to save this painting - I've come to this video, and several of the others, a few years late: but that doesn't matter, they're as eternally fascinating as some of the paintings Mr Baumgartner has saved from the scrapheap - and like them, he needs to be conserved, cherished, and preserved! For how many people in the world could hope to achieve results like these from tattered and torn canvas, with chunks of paint missing, clumsy overpainting with permanent materials, little holes peppered throughout the canvas..... one thing's for damn' sure, I certainly couldn't. Mr B, you've caused me to run out of superlatives - even your advertising sections are witty, interesting, relevant, and ethical.... it's good to know that there are people like you in the world.

It's comforting to know that the world has you in it. Someone who knows how to fix the most distressed distraught abused and oldest piece of intellectual property that exists. I was mesmerised captivated enthralled during the entire process and positively relieved to see the final result restored to what it was originally intended even as it no longer displays the ravages of time that are sometimes considered it'smark of value. At some point, intellectual property will have no value if no action to restore is taken. I suppose having it be reversible suits the next restorer who wants to keep the restoration integral. But all historical work has it's value for the intellectual process that the original artist intended and applied to achieve that body of work. How long that piece of art survived is of no consequence. Art is not art for art's sake. But an individual process that tells us a lot about the time period itself and at the end of the day, true ownership lies with the artist.
