Viewers of these videos and others familiar with conservation of artworks will recognize that one of the most common refrains is "archival and reversible." Conservators hold that phrase sacred and as a guiding principal for their work. Conservators labor to ensure that the work they execute will be stable for the long term, will not cause harm or damage to the artwork and is able to be safely removed in the future if ever needed.
In this video Julian demonstrates exactly what that phrase means by revisiting a conservation he completed five years earlier. The first successful conservation addressed a several issues that the painting presented. Unfortunately as is sometimes the case, the painting suffered additional incidental damage and returned to Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration. It is during this second visit to the studio that Julian reverses all of his old conservation work as he labors to again conserve and restore the painting. It is through this pursuit that the difference between antiquated materials, approaches and techniques and modern ones can be clearly seen.

When I was living in Washington DC I met a refugee from 1949 China. His father gave him a beautifully painted silk scroll as he was leaving. 30 years later my friends new kitten took a flying leap onto it hanging on the wall and left a long tear down the entire length exactly in the middle. I took it to the Freer and some wonderful restorer repaired it so well you couldn't see that anything had happened. THANK YOU again 40 years later.

  • @lwilton
    @lwilton Před 4 lety +186

Hum, they removed your tag, which might have been problematic if someone else had had to do the restoration. Since you seem to always add a backing board, why not put a copy of your label on the inside of the board? The next conservator will find it, but the curator probably won't, and won't feel the need to remove something "unoriginal" from the back of the painting. (Put a label on the the outside of course, so they can again remove that, while missing the hidden label.)
This is why I'd suggested recently on another painting video with massive retouching that you could have hidden pictures of the painting before and after retouching inside the backing board. I've spent a lot of time working in the data industry, and one thing I learned about 50 years ago was that it is really easy to lose documentation that isn't intimately attached to the item being documented. You gave the owner of the painting the documentation, and he probably put it in his safe deposit box. Then when he dies, his descendants will throw it out before selling the painting. They are less likely to remove the backing board before selling the painting.

@@benjigalvani I mean, you can take measures to try and prevent this. For example, n o t l e t t i n g the cats sit on a valued piece of art. Or, training cats to not to do that. I get that cats have a destructive nature, but there is a fine line of their nature and spoilage. If you don't want your cats to wreck your things, maybe place them in a hard to reach place.

@@peepichu5594 that’s understandable, however it’s hard to train cats to *not* do something like sit on a painting, because there’s no way you can teach a cat that. Paintings are usually on the walls. You can only really train a cat to not do something that they have the opportunity to do anytime.

Now I’m thinking of a modern and almost reverse Pygmalion love story where a painting of a young woman is alive and falls in love with the conservator her owners send her to get repaired.
The conservator is kind and talks to her even though she can’t talk back. When he handles her he uses a gentle touch and admires her beauty. She’s embarrassed by the unsightly hole in her forehead and how poor her upkeep has been, but this conservator sees her flaws and mends to them tenderly. She leaves the conservator feeling better than she has in a hundred years!
Then the moment turns bittersweet because since she’s fixed she can’t be with the conservator anymore. After five years, she’s pining to be back with him again. She tried to think of a plan. Of course! She has to give her owners a reason to see him! She won’t do anything drastic, oh no, she wouldn’t dare undo a majority of the lovely work the Conservator has done, though a little scuff could work. But there's one crucial problem, being a painting means she cannot move.
The owner's cats being the ever paranormally sensitive creatures that they are, sense her distress. They see that she’s alive. She somehow communicates to them that she needs a little disrepair. They give her a few scratches, in fact, one of the cats tries to comfort her by sitting on her chest. He causes a small rupture, but the Painting doesn’t mind the contact, in fact, the cat’s tail tickled when it feathered her nose. The owner sees what the cats have done and panic, quickly calling the Conservator’s phone number.
During the transport to his business, the Painting is so nervous. Has the Conservator tended to other paintings more magnificent than she? Perhaps, she fears, she wasn’t that striking to begin with. Maybe he doesn’t remember the experience and how much it meant to her. Why would he? Despite her connection, she admits that when she interacted with the Conservator it was quite one-sided. During their first session, all she did was lay there like a knot on a log, she is inanimate after all...
After a few days of being in the Conservator’s storage, it’s finally her turn. He picks her up and places her on the display wall. He steps back and puts his hand on his chin, taking her all in. As she is pensively studied, the flowers in her hand have never been gripped tighter. Her lily-white skin has never felt moisture before but if it did she believes it would be flushed with sweat. She cannot move her eyes, but she watches his as they dart around analyzing her. His gaze feels like someone has brought a lit match dangerously close to her canvas.
She has always wanted to feel this seen.
It is momentous, it is adoring, and it is agony.
The Conservator's posture relaxes, finished with assessing what needs to be done. He smiles and says,
“It’s wonderful to see you again, Anne.”
Relief and elation rush through her.
Oh, how wonderful it is to be with you again, thought the Painting.

Julian, I have some questions that my inner nerd just can't contain:
-Have you ever had clients who may have considered themselves purists, insisting you use traditional methods and materials? If so, what was your response?
-Have you ever been asked to retouch a watercolor? Can one even do that using archival materials?
My father has this gorgeous and rather large Pennsylvania Dutch traditional scherenschnitte piece. It's painted with watercolors which have dulled a bit over the last few decades. Is this something a conservator could realistically take on?
-To date, what is the strangest piece you've ever restored? I'm talking about strangest construction, materials, medium, etc. rather than subject.
    And finally...
-Hardest (Most costly?) restoration lesson(s) you've learned.
    Inquiring minds want to know!
