Part 2 here: • A New Dawn: The Restor...
Every now and then a project comes into the studio that is so desperate for intervention that the scope of the work involved seems insurmountable. Yet those are just the types of projects conservators thrive on; the ones that look disastrous, require a phenomenal amount of work and creativity but if treated right and with care and precision will respond beautifully.
Such is the case with this copy of Guido Reni's masterpiece "L'Aurora". Though the artist is unknown it was clearly executed with great skill and for a copy the scale is rather impressive. The same cannot be said about its condition. Having suffered water damage there is a tremendous amount of paint loss and what paint remains is perilously attached to the canvas. Several massive holes, tears, and canvas losses have also threatened the structural integrity of the work. Suffice it to say this will be a magnum opus of conservation.
But that's what we live for.
Hey folks, sorry I left you hanging there at the end. Part two will post on Monday the 18th (lets just hope I can finish editing it 😜)

Julian: Now this, is epic
If there's anything this channel has taught me, it's that people in old paintings were *blindingly* white.
Me
I was watching a video about the Mona Lisa a few days ago and apparently the paint pigments themselves break down over time. For example, a lot of the greenish skies we see used to be a super vibrant blue when painted. The red pigments used for skintone break down and become overpowered by the white pigment. Leaving all these white people looking *extra* white. I'm not an expert or anything, just parroting what I remember hearing a couple days ago.
That's how White I aspire to be 😂
In really old paintings like this one the way the skin tones were painted back when this was painted were always really fair, so it’s likely that the artist intended for the skin tones to be really fair.
But the pigments also likely had a role in making them super pale. It’s highly likely that the artist used some sort of red pigment in the skin tones (since using red and yellow and white is how you’re supposed to make white skin tones) and red pigments are notorious for fading overtime due to very low lightfast rating.
So yeah, it’s likely that the artist intended for very light skin tones, but the reason that all the skin tones (in old paintings, unless the artist specifically went for a darker skin tone) appear extremely light is due to the red paint fading over time, which generally happens at most 10 years after it’s painted.
But pretty sure the artist was going for blindingly white lol

Watching you clean this painting gave me food for thought about the current realities of photo editing. I always start out thinking what a shame it is that you are losing that lovely golden color cast given by the aged varnish and end up appreciating the more vibrant colors that are revealed.
I generally try to make people (and other things) appear as close to the way I remember seeing them when I took the photo as I can when I am doing basic editing. And, when I am editing a photo for more than just aligning the way the camera sees to the way I see, I let my own personal vision of the photo I thought I was taking direct my "brush" in adding a bit of light or shadow for emphasis here and there. I appreciate the way painters direct the eye in a painting. It's an education in itself to just look at them and think about where the eye is directed in a painting.

The skill with which the hair's been done... exquisite.
Julian, I’m sure you’ll never see this, but on the off-chance you do, I just wanted to thank you for the calm, self-assured way you speak about your craft. I struggle a lot with imposter syndrome and doubt myself even when I know that I have the knowledge. Hearing you change your, “We’re in luck this worked,” to, “Well, not luck-years of practice so that I know what to expect,” makes a great mental template for me to reframe my thoughts.
Super deep for something small, I know, but I’ve noticed it in several videos and it’s resonated with me. I’m sure that wasn’t your intent 😂, but thank you nevertheless. Your words and demeanor are always so thoughtfully chosen.
Man: lemme play you some Bach while I clean this painting
Me: ok...?
Me five mins later: damn I didn't realise how much I needed this 🥺
I 100% agree. I just wish he had turned the music sound down a bit and the ambient sounds up. Love the ASMR of cleaning.
It strangely made me emotionnal like I felt so priviledged to see the reveal of the true nature of the painting !
"No, no, no, don't end it here, don't end it here... this is the best pa... God dammit"
Seriously, I didn't realize it was just a part 1. ):
Same!! I was so caught up in it I didn’t realize the video was about to end right before the touch up part! Nooooo!
I honestly just said 'Julian NO' when he ended it haha
I felt the same way!!!
When I saw the video was 30 minutes, and then saw the epic amount of damage, I knew the video couldn’t be long enough. So I checked the title and sure enough it said part 1. I can’t wait for part 2.
Whoever painted this, if it wasn't the original artist, they did a crazy good job. Going back and forth between the copy you're repairing and the original is impressive.
I think Bach + restoration is a wonderful combination, but in case you do any more "water breaks," I would ABSOLUTELY take cleaning ASMR as well :D
He does cleaning ASMR! Check out his channel, he has some really good unnarrated restoration videos
Welp, time for my annual “im gonna be an art conservationist” phase
I've always thought that would be a fun and fascinating career, but I wouldn't be able to handle the pressure lol.
emeralddarkness same
this is me every time he uploads LMAO
Perhaps he should have uploaded the unedited continuous 200 hours of footage for you to realize how dull and tedious it can also be. You really need to be extremely patient to do this kind of work.
Johnny lol hence the word “phase”
“There’s even some old conservation work that needs to come off.”
*Wait you mean it GETS WORSE-*
I mean, could be polyurethane

@@LittleGrayRam god forbid polyurethane with staples **shudder**

LMFAOOOOOOO
I’ve watched this lots of times. Think it’s my all time favourite conservation by Julian. I also think the painting is stunning and something Id have up on my walls if only my house was big enough for it. Thank you Julian for sharing this with us all ! Watching it yet again as I type ! X
Very impressive. A master of the art
Julian: removes old varnish and the vibrant colors appear
me: *suprised pikachu face*
I really should know by now that old varnish is pretty dirty but my brain has old paintings saved as very muted and odd yellowish skin color XD
Agreed. The first time I saw a restoration video on this channel I was so shocked at how bright the colors were. Beforehand, I'd just assumed that renaissance painters liked yellow and brown.
@@mikkurzhal7390 SAME!!! I was like wow ok well thats not really my cup of tea (yellow and brown) for colors but who am i to judge lol
Might have to overwrite that save of old yellow paintings with new vibrant paintings XD
Old, battered painting in desperate need of restoration:
Julian: Come, you’re safe now my sweet child...
that is just the sweetest thing 🥺🥺
15:45 girls getting ready for bed after a night out be like
It is so wonderfully cathartic watching him clean the painting. I can’t believe how relaxed it made me
I wonder who brought this in.
They had to be like "hi, I'm *sorry*"
Athena Baucum I just want to know how much this one costs to restore. I’m thinking like 10k
@@cauchemar479 prob way more
@@cauchemar479 10k seems cheap AF. Honestly
Cauchemar seeing as he worked on this painting for probably close to a year it was probably closer to 100k than anything. It was immensely damaged and very large. Even small paintings are several thousand dollars to have restored so this one was probably a large investment to have restored.
HollyAnne he didn’t work on it for close to a year, it was sitting in his office for a year before the client decided to give him the go ahead to work on it
Julian: It's rabbit skin glue
Me: that damn rabbit again...
My dad works in book Restoration, and I love seeing the overlap of materials and techniques that you both use! My dad has made homemade washi kozo before, and uses blotting paper to press books as well. There's a lot more you guys both do, but I can't remember the technical terms for all of them.
