Another tip, since the person with the question did mention a preamp: Many preamps have settings which influence the level of amplification. Just look at the bottom of the Pro-Ject phono stage Matt mentions, for example. So when playback sounds too soft or muffled, or too loud and harsh, you may want to check those settings. Refer to the manual to understand what the settings do, and then the specifications of your phono cartridge to look at its output. That will tell you how to set the right settings.
I have an Audio Technica LP120 and was looking at a different stylus and saw the preferred one by many was about $300…. Or I could spend it on CDs that sound great already…. For the record (pun intended) that’s about 100-200 used CDs…. lol Great call outs on what to check to get better sound
Hi Matt great channel - at last ...one that talks sense and if may I make another comment, your listenners might want a USB powered microscope - this allows you to examine the profile on a stylus for less than a trip to Pizza hut. MC's i.m.o are a waste of money. I run a hifi shop and have both MM and MC in stock . There are plenty of MM's that are super responsive, great clarity projecting a massive stagewidth. With the added benefit of swap the stylus out when worn. Save money folks

I use the ELAC Alchemy Phono Preamplifier - PPA-2, which gives excellent sound with my moving coil cartridge.
I plugged mine into the mains socket...it sounded electric!
Haha love it!
I have a Revolver Black Ash Turntable with Linn K9 Cartridge on a Linn Basik LV X arm tonearm bought back in 1989 & still giving me great music.
Great work thanks very much !
You're welcome and many thanks for the super chat! That will go towards more great music to showcase on the channel so it means a lot!

Yeah I'm with you on that one. Most of my music collection is on CD for that very reason!
Thanks
Thank you too!

I also bought the USB microscope on Amazon & yes it lets you see things you would not believe when looking at Stylus tips & record grooves.
