Thousands are locked up without trial and face conditions described as sub-human by the United Nations. Haiti is known for recent natural disasters, reporter Seyi Rhodes was in the capital of Port-au-prince investigating a justice system in turmoil.

It's jacked up. A family member of mine is the director of finance for a chapter of Habitat for Humanity. He had someone who was an attorney in Haiti and had to flee the country because people were going to kill him. Him and his family (3 kids) lived out of a van for 2 years. He eventually got a job working in a chicken plant (with a law degree). He has a house now and is working in sales and doing well. He volunteers as the Creole translator for Habitat now. Just makes me wonder how complex the problem is, you don't hear about attorneys being run out of the US very often unless they did something really wrong.

Sounds like its easy to be a judge in Haiti, you get 2 months vacation and then when you get back, you can just leave work early. Must be nice getting paid while men are locked up and cant get their due process.

They make more money locking ppl up. They also commit more crimes than people do because they can get away with it.

We throw people in jails because they choose to sell or buy sexual favors, or because they want to sit on a park bench and enjoy smoking a weed that no pharmaceutical company has a patent on (think how different it would be if they did! There would be commercials exhorting people to relax with a little smoke, and maybe your insurance would even pay for it.) We have people doing more time in prison for piddly stuff than for murder. For decades you got more time for a rock of coke than for an equal amount of powder. Gotta pay for that over bloated police state we call America and how better to rip off citizens and make them fearful of "law enforcement " than with whole books full of stupid, unjust, and arbitrary laws?

They like it that way. It facilitates corruption, theft, and exploitation for generations to come. Yeah some people suffer, but it's all in the price of doing business. What's upsetting is that people here in the USA don't realize how great they have it, even if they don't agree on policies with people like Trump. As bad as some relatively isolated instances of racism and bigotry in the USA might be, the sheer lack of care about human life in so many parts of the world blows away the issues in the States.
This was one of the best investigative pieces I've seen in a while - great job on this to the team, especially the boots-on-ground reporter / crew. Amazing coverage, and it was refreshing to hear some tough questions posed to those in positions of power. Abhorrent treatment of other humans.
I have a coworker who is orginally from Haiti. He's fairly new to the U.S and speaks little english. When I asked him where he was originally from, what sticks out the most is him saying "Haiti. Very poor. Very crooked." He is one of the lucky ones. I can't imagine how blessed and grateful he feels to be able to have such freedoms each day.
These able bodied men could be helping to rebuild the country but they’re wasting away in prison.

Left Haiti for the US when I was 12, I'm 27 now. Unless Haiti is being ruled by foreign powers, there's no Haitian in Haiti to become president that could changed that.

The US and France did this to Haiti, during the colonization of Haiti by France, the slaves fought back and took their country back from their oppressors. The French then made the country promise to pay them back all of the lost profits caused by fighting for their own freedom.
The US overthrew the government of Haiti in more recent times and both countries are responsible for the horrors we see in this video.

@Allen Strange Haiti is in the Caribbean. People in government running the show are puppets for particular interests. And the problem is that these places are insanely corrupt. If you get rid of corruption, you can get rid of a ton of problems.
One time I went to Haïti for 2 months for vacation and they took me in prison for no reason… The prisoners were like "Why is there a white canadian man here" they had a lot of questions and that took the attention of the guards. I told them that I’m only here for vacation and I have nothing to do here and I got back to Canada my ticket was refund. Worst experience of my life

A huge problem is that everyone is saying "It's not my responsibility." When nobody is held accountable for their actions, this is what happens. Every step of the way seems to come to a roadblock each time. When the two guys were told they were going to be released, I had a feeling there was going to be a reason that they wouldn't be released.
This is more than heartbreaking, sad, sick, disgusting, unbelievable...there aren't enough words to describe how horrendous this is.
