    This was my stomping grounds from the early 60's till moving there in 1974. I had a sweet studio apartment on 3rd Ave near 75th Street (aka Bay Ridge Pkwy). Rent was $90/month including gas and electric. And I had a freakin' YARD to boot. A fantastic neighborhood then. Almost exclusively Norwegian, Italian and Greek. Low to non existent crime and this was during NYC's 1970's crime heyday. Hung out at Cannonball park (101st and 4th). The real name is John Paul Jones park. Bliss park had some swell concerts in summers. Usually, crappy local bands but it sounded great. With my girl, a few joints and Boones Farm I was set. Glad you spelled Verrazzano correctly, fuhgeddaboudit.

    What's up Manny? Man, I haven't been there in years. That's not the Brooklyn I grew up with. Miss that diversity. Here in Chicago the different cultures are usually in different areas of the city, not mixed together like that. It does look like Jersey. So cool you can see the bridge from there. You're very good at showcasing these hidden gems.

    Manny, I lived on the army base there and walked through John Paul Jones park to take the city bus along Shore Road to Fort Hamilton High School. 86th Street between 4th & 5th Streets was the place for Bay Ridge shopping. 3rd & 4th Streets from the bridge northward had restaurants. Some wonderful memories there.

    • @martyjewell5683
      @martyjewell5683 Před 2 lety +3

      Think you mean 3rd and 4th Avenues, not streets. Always called that park Cannonball park. The shopping on 86th street went from 4th Avenue up to Ft. Hamilton Pkwy. Was a great area in the 1970's. A fair amount of eateries along 5th and 3rd Avenues. I lived there from 1974 till moving upstate in 1989.

    • @NDNelson
      @NDNelson Před 2 lety +1

      @@martyjewell5683 OK great, thank you for the corrections. Loved exploring the neighborhood back then. I know why you called it "Cannonball Park!" A few cannons on the base, too. Do you remember Tiffany's restaurant close to that park? Divine cheesecake there. Miss the area so much. How fortunate you were to live there so long.

    • @martyjewell5683
      @martyjewell5683 Před 2 lety +2

      @@NDNelson Yes the Tiffany Restaurant. I saved a paper placemat from there and framed it. Went there last in 2011, hear it's gone now. Remember the St. Patrick church baseball fields across from Cannonball park??? That's all apartment buildings now. As kids we watched them build the Verrazzano bridge. I went with a girlfriend to the Easter Dawn service at Ft. Hamilton in 1970. Went there again for my draft physical later that year. Those cannons in the park (and on the base) are from the Civil War.
