Welcome to Chasing Latitudes! Have you ever imagined the smell of the ocean air as your boat crashes through the waves? The freedom that comes from casting off the bow lines and heading out to sea to explore new places you can’t reach by car or airplane? Then this channel is for you.
You will not see white sand beaches here, restaurant reviews, beach parties, selfies or Japanese knives. What you will find is factual information based on decades of sailing experience.
My channel is specifically meant for one thing and one thing only, to help YOU find your new to you fancy-dancy yacht of your dreams and get on the water in the fastest, most time efficient manner.
Don’t get caught up in looking at old boats! I focus on mostly newer vessels, built in 2000 or later because I want you to spend as much of your time as possible sailing, not practicing your restoration skills on an old boat attempting to bring it to its former glory.
You want to take advantage of the amazing newer technology and modern hull designs when it comes to sailing. This is going to make your vessel far easier to sail solol or short handed and make them far more comfortable and efficient to live aboard full time or even just weekenders without buying more boat than you need.
I offer a wide variety of services including consulting where I will take you through the entire process of how to budget properly, choosing what vessel size will work for your needs, what type of vessel, I will help you shop for vessels, determine offer prices, schedule surveys, talk with brokers, teach you how to do your own pre-survey, walk you through hiring the correct surveyor and help you avoid all of the common pitfalls that you will find when purchasing used sailing vessels.
The consulting does not stop there, I will be with you every step of the way and long after you have purchased your vessel as consulting also comes with lifetime access to the members area,.
Chasing Latitudes hosts a large, active private members area where the members are more than happy to offer their own experience to solve problems, host private videos for ASA Sailing quizzes (ASA 101, 103, & 104), and live stream videos which feature anything from member cruising to boat shopping, boat comparisons, and other live content with chat from the subscribers to my CZcams channel and channel members.
It’s time for YOU to get on the water. Come aboard!

I was in contract with that POS 2015 Oceanis 45 you just showed at the Moorings for 169k named Pelican Pat. Its a complete toilet/dumpster fire. I ran as fast as I could after they finally "let" me see the actual boat. I ended up buying a 2013 Jeanneau 41ds. Very happy with it.

Your opinions are informed by reality, facts and experience, which is why at least I faithfully watch your videos. You often have something meaningful to share, and you actually manage to have original ideas and content regularly. Thanks and keep it coming.

The real problem with that Moody is the teak deck. Otherwise, it seems like a great boat. Let's say that boat is $199k. Or the new one is $1M+. So would you rather have that classic Moody 54 and $800k in the bank, or the new one for $1M and nothing in the bank. Think of how much boat work and boat enjoyment you could do with that Moody 54 and $800k. The Irwin 54 is a bunch of junk compared to the Moody. I would imagine the new Moody boats are pretty great, but lots of people have bought new boats for $1m and experienced a complete disaster. Check out that travel sketch channel with the new Leopard 45 that has been in the yard for 1 year working on warranty repairs. The case for an older boat that has all that worked out is compelling.

    yarrrr captain
love your channel. I'm way too poor to purchase most of them boats. We were living in a 1987 Oday 302 for 18 months until that storm around the 17th of December when our boat ended up on shore and smashing into a peer. Insurance claimed it as total. Recently we purchased a 1984 S2 9.2c. Would love to know your opinions on the S2. Thanks Captain

Do you know of any statistic, that tracks the loss of a rudder on boats where the spade rudder is in line with the keel, and modern broad boats with two rudders parallel to the keel? In case, two rudder boats lose a loot more rudders, beyond the too expected statistical happenings, as there are double as much rudder on a two rudder boat. That would very nicely prove your point that the keel protects the rudder and the skeg-hung-rudder is dangerous, can rip the bottom open, and is a waste of money as they are more expensive through more material and complications. Thats for the one who don't believe in your practical & theoretical superior experience compared to the average cruiser.
I do enjoy your rants tremendously. Thanks!

I think you are responsible for selling all the boats on the moorings brokerage. You have certainly reshaped my approach to buying my next boat. I checked out a Tartan last week and using your "re-think" approach helped me realize that the boat was way over priced despite being a great boat.

I love your Channel but I can't afford a boat over 40,000. I would like a sailboat between 35 and 40 ft. I'm going to use it as a live aboard and to sail on the Chesapeake and perhaps down to the Caribbean but that's about it. Do you have any recommendations?
I've lived on a boat before but not a sailboat and I used to teach at the Annapolis ssiling school about 15 years ago...

The Lagoon 410 is worth a look. Yes, the sails and rigging are complete trash and need to be thrown away. Let's put replacement cost at $25k. That's 10% of the cost of the boat. That's nothing. The interior design is amazing. It knocks the other ones out of the water. Sails can be changed. Interior designs cannot be changed.

You don't bum around on a sailboat and p$$p out your girlfriend in the thumbnails to boost your views. Your videos are always informative and educational. I look forward to meeting you in the not too distant future when I'm ready to purchase our sailboat.

I have no dog in this fight , BUT
Caribbean live a board sailing is different than Arctic , Australian , Day , Great Lakes , Great Loop , Nordic , South China sea , Southern Ocean or Weekend warrior sailing .
That "niche" is what Chris specializes in as he is a delivery captain living in that area ....
He is not a Louisianan fisherman talking about Caribbean live a board boats , He does it .........
Me ? I am thinking of Great Loop sailing with Caribbean sailing tossed in .... 20 years of adventure before I pass away
      1) "cheap" production boats have more spare parts available to buy . So less time waiting on parts and in an expensive marina .
      2) UV is brutal in Florida and Caribbean , so for a sailboat / fiberglass death comes quick if boat is not taken care of properly .
Which Chris does not cover .
      3) Sailboat market is still way to over priced like the housing market in US / the bubble is going to burst .
The reality for armchair sailors / owners .
basically what this video is about
      4) There is no reason to reinvent the wheel .... Chris's advice is not gospel but an educated opinion from experience for area he sails .
      5) Knowledge normally cost you $$$ to get ..... example : Colleges charge $$,$$$ per year for knowledge
This is free with reasons why the opinion
