I just bought a islander36 coincidentally my sons name is Austin 🎉One more interesting thing we lived in Santa Cruz I have moved back home to Ventura Austin and my other son Kai still live in Santa Cruz.🎉🎉
This was awesome. I'm incredibly impressed by how laid-back you were considering you lost all power for the majority of the crossing. Any of the famous youtube sailing channels out there would have used that for clickbait and turned the whole thing into major drama. Exactly how did you maintain navigation? Was it just the handheld GPS unit and something like Navionics? I'm assuming you must have carried extra charged batteries. I sail out of SF, haven't done any major crossings yet, but when I do I hope it's with a couple of crew members like you guys. Cheers.
Sparky, thanks for the kind words. We did not have much other option other than hanging in there for the long haul. We had numerous handheld gps options as well as the other electronics with gps data. The two 100W solar panels kept our batteries charged the whole way.
Great trip, thanks. This is one of my favorite boats. Great bang for the buck. You could have drawn from the clean Gerry jug? Good of Perkins 4-108. I have had 2 boats that had old Perkins. A 4-154 and a 4-236. Both great engines. You made good time. Very nice, thanks.
We had tried to pull form many of the other jugs, as well as the clear jug. We ultimately had sal crystals contaminating the high pressure injector pump so we were never successful. Had the pump rebuilt, but the saltwater caused more damage. Boat now has a yanmar.
Great video. I hope to do this round-trip in the next few years out of Alameda. How did you get back into Monterey without an engine? Did you call TowBoatUS? Or are you just awesome at sailing into a slip (#goals)?
At 29.47 there is a fin in the water ahead of the other ship , looks like a hammerhead is cruising there. BTW great vid and thank you for posting this. Greetings from Greece.
Hey I saw this boat for sale in an earlier video. Recognized it by the placement of the emergency raft on the rail. New owners? Or previous owners. Is the 36 an S&S design? Always liked the profile of this boat. Wonder What finally solved the engine problem? I'm guessing the engine issue is a plugged cooling water manifold.
Hi Austin! Q from another I36 owner: While her cabin trunk is all "Islander 36", the cabin layout is more "Islander 36 Freeport"...? What's the story behind that, do you know? Have any pictures online? Thanks, great video!!! :)
Great video!!! Please do me a favor in all future videos though, whenever intentionally leaving the boat to dive or jump in the water and the boat is under sail power, please tie a lifeline around you and attach it to a secure place on the boat. Yes, you did have someone else on board. I understand that fully but do you realize just how difficult it would be to circle about on sail power while keeping his eye on you to retrieve you? Please don't do that again.
Fuel filler O-ring..blah.....water separator would have caught that, but you have managed....but next time maybe a small hand pump where you could by pass the tank with a yellow 5 gal can....and run the engine just to keep things charged.
We tried running from a fresh 5 gallon jug. Saltwater had already taken its toll on the high pressure pump and injectors. Had a water separator too but it wasn’t enough.
Howdy strangers, really love this video. When I was a boy my dad sailed me up and down the Atlantic. It was the best!
Lots of very sophisticated videos out there but yours is just pure sailing and its reality. Really enjoyed it.
Loved that. Thank you so much for sharing. Looks like you made some changes to the interior of Hangover.
Yeaaahhhhh...!!! We love your trip Guys !!! Thanks for making us a part of it..!!! We wait for the next one ...
Such a great adventure to do with your old man.
Lifetime memories. cheers
Kinda nice seeing a nice calm sailing video. Good video. Makes me wish I had sons.
Long journey! Looks like it will definitely be an epic adventure though!

Cool, I live on a 50ft sailboat in Hawaii!
HORRAYYYY!!!! Fantastic video chaps! Missing you David!!
Love your vlog. Great quality time with papa and son. I hope you guys had a blast!
You could easily pass as a brother for Leo from the Tally Ho Restoration channel (Sampson Boat Co). Thanks for your videos, they are inspiring

Perfect sized sailboat for making the crossing. I did it on a Santana 35.
wishing I could have been onboard with you guys!

@@Austin_Book very nice. I made that switch once in an Albert 35.
Nice trip.

its phosphoric acid in the coke. just like toilet bowl cleaner. they add it for taste
Added for taste. Huh, no wonder my dog loves drinking out of the toilet …
Rad stuff! Curious why you chose the islander Freeport…
Nice fishing

Thinking about buying an Islander and came across your video. What is the headspace like in the cabin?
Just above 6 feet all the way forward to v-berth. I think 6' 2" officially. My head doesn't touch and I'm 6' 1" :-)
Curious what windvane you used. Looked pretty bullet-proof.
It is the Hydrovane, it did an excellent job.
There is an I36 next to me in the yard.

Nice
What month is this?
29:47 is that a freakin Shark fin popping out right there or ...?
Nice dorado
Run on the jugs
That fish can only see outta one eye now. If he gets hit from his blind side, he's lunch for some kinda predator....

I agree and would add, please clip in anytime you leave the cockpit to go up on deck. Day or night.
. . . . you went to sea without wind diffuser over the microphone hole in your camera ?
Saltwater had already contaminated the high pressure pump as well as the injectors. All were toasted.

Paradise to 💩.
Set off across the ocean and did not even bring a spare filter. This is why Californians should not be allowed to vote.
