- This video documents my trip from Los Angeles to Hawaii. I spent 27 days alone at sea aboard my small Ranger 23 sailboat.

Does anyone else just *love* the fact the video starts exactly where it should, with him pushing off? Not rambling for 5, 10, 15 minutes about how & why he's doing it. Thank you for that.
yes but is anyone else pissed that he didn't wait until daylight to make landfall? If he was so all fired eager to arrive he could have kept it to himself then went back out the next morning and filmed an epic arrival with proper lighting. I want my 40 minutes back.

There was a kayaking group that was in the Grand Canyon all of February and then when they left the canyon in March they were shocked because the world was so different compared to the when they first went camping 4 weeks prior

At age 74 and no longer having a boat my love of sailing is satisfied (almost) by You Tube sailing videos. This one is the best because its shows how it really is aboard a small boat alone.

This could be the start of a good zombie movie. He is sailing for a month and during that time the outbreak hits and when he gets to Hawaii its abandoned and everything is destroyed. Idk something like that.
I love zombie movies!! Sounds like a cool story line though!!!

Doing this on a 23 footer is genuinely incredibly impressive. I wouldn't attempt anything like this in something shorter than 30. You're a hell of a solo sailor.

Cool video. My dad and I sailed from Berkeley, California to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1985 on a 25 foot Nordic folk boat. We used only celestial navigation and compass.(no such thing as GPS back then) It took 28 days to Hawaii and we had planned to go to Tahiti after that, but we stayed in Hawaii instead. I’ve been here ever since. Aloha from Hawaii 🤙🏼
That's awesome
Awesome story thanks for sharing! Did you guys sail on the intentions of never coming back?
uterotourettes15, no, actually we intended to sail around the world. But that was when we had the 30’ Tahiti Ketch. That boat could have made it around the world. My dad lost that one in his second divorce, so he bought the 25’ Nordic Folkboat. A beautiful little wooden boat with a lap strake hull. That one was pretty squirrely in higher winds and didn’t lend itself to self-steering, but it was built sturdy and we sailed it up and down the coast to see if she could handle the open ocean. We decided to just try the passage to Hawaii and see how that goes. My dad had single-handed the Tahiti to and from Hawaii twice, so he knew what to expect. We hit a few storms and got banged around some. Then just as we got close to the tropics we were utterly becalmed for about 5 days. I think we drifted backwards for about a hundred miles. The tradewinds got us moving west again. We spotted Haleakala on Maui and decided to cruise to Oahu and dock at Ala Wai harbor where my dad knew the harbor master from previous trips. That was a great adventure but that little boat kicked our butts. My dad got a job on Oahu as a sailing instructor and I worked in the boatyard. I guess Hawaii kinda grew on us and we decided to sell the boat and stay for a while. My dad got married to a Canadian tourist and they retired up in Canada. Sick of the relentless tropical heat mostly. I’ve been here since 85’ but I travel to Canada to visit dad.
Anyway, sailing across the Pacific in a small boat is not for the faint of heart. But when you get to your destination alive, there’s nothing in the world that compares to that experience.
Aloha.
Great life story man. I have five brothers yet I am the only son who will sail with our dad. It is a shame because he is so happy when he is sailing.
Hello from England. Forever keep that wind in your sails, cheers
That's sick!
This is truly epic. So many little highlights scattered throughout the duration… not to mention just the very impressive mid-voyage repairs, navigation, all the little nautical tidbits… very impressive. I hope you’ve got some serious sponsorships going because this is damn impressive. Beats the hell out of any of the reality TV shows I’ve seen lately.

I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to set out on a 27 day journey like this!!props to you man you’re living life right.
A little friend like a bird can really do a lot for the morale even if ever so brief.
Edited: And then the little bugger flys away and it's like, no..... wilson, noooo... willlllssssoooooooooonn!!!!!!!
My FAVORITE thing about this video is that he always has a smile on his face
It was a 27 day trip. You're only seeing the 40 minutes of smiling out of 38,880 minutes of crying, ocean sickness, and diarrhea.
CogniVision 😂😂😂

It's those prescription opioids
I can't imagine what those huge ships are thinking when they see his tiny little sailboat out there in the middle of the ocean
I love Sam's perpetual smile that goes right along with his positive outlook and attitude. Good on ya mate!
I lost it at "I made Henrietta a house." :)
osbjmg the transition from “I brought the bird inside” to “ I made Henrietta a house” made me burst out laughing
osbjmg
He definitely killed that bird lol
@Scooters Videos lmfaooo
This guy has the courage of a lion. What a amazing solo accomplishment. Total respect for this guy!!!
and after a month on the ocean, the mane to go with it!
We should compare a lion to him. I don't know how he held on to his nerves sailing into those squalls ... I would cry, pee my pants and kill myself if I had to do it solo.
@@Akashpagol Could you imagine being in the pitch black dark, and start to hear the droning of a 1000 ft container ship somewhere very close by? I would be so terrorized, that I would be as frozen as a salt statue.
@@scotabot7826 i can't agree more with you.
With the right equipment you get notified by nasty alarm if something is near. And are seen with a radar reflector up on the mast.
I really enjoyed watching this, thank you for being you Sam!
I’ve wondered about this for the past 11 years. Thanks for doing this!
I sailed to Hawaii back in 2010 from LA, hardest part was staying away from the buffet table
Good time to go do it again...👀
Cruise ships arent sailboats dumbass
@@richyyyyyy97 Whoosh!
@@hazbutler you need to learn how to use that. Because you look like some who doesnt completely comprehend what they say. There wasnt a joke i didnt understand. You're stupid, thanks for pointing that out to me.
@@richyyyyyy97 You seem happy and fun. Good luck, Dick.

Im watching this for the second time, after 2 years, wow, so much has changed, but so much is the same! I forgot about Henrietta!
Only 40 minute video I’ve ever watched without skipping anything
im trying to watch it, but im already sea sick at 3:16
@@goy1849 the baby bird had me hooked for the rest of it
I made it through. Worth the watch 👍🏻
I skipped around but the video was still super impressive!!
Me toooo
Dear Sam, I believe scarce few here truly understand what you accomplished. In raw reality. A fickle mortal, venturing into the belly of the archetypal beast for a month, without safe harbor or lifeline, in the only spirit that could make such a feat possible. The quintessence of the Epic Journey. The stuff of deep-time mythology. In modernity. Absolutely incredible! This is the kind of experience that defines a lifetime, that so few will ever know on their deathbed. You, Sir, are my Hero, and I could never say something like that superficially. Respect. Truly.
Thanks! I really liked this comment. Cheers.
Well said!
i feel like you should be a voice actor for the introduction in assassins creed or some shit 🤣
Drama queen
A bit dramatic but ok... good point
Amazing 👌 ....even despite seasickness , sleep deprivation you always keep that smile and positive spirit while filming ... and casually crossing a ocean 😎
That was amazing. Thanks for bringing us on the journey.
