Purusha is the Atman un-manifested. Prakriti is the Atman manifested. Being the subtlest of the subtle Purusha cannot be known with the mind, body or senses. However with intense sadhana a person can become one with the Purusha in a super conscious state .

@@sca8217You would do well to remember that all FUNDAMENTAL laws of the PUREST of MODERN SCIENCES are HYPOTHESIS of visionary scientists based on EMPIRICAL EXPERIENCE & OBSERVATION with measurements where possible, and they are ALWAYS waiting to be SUPERCEDED by a BETTER hypothesis when any empirical experience VIOLATES the existing hypothesis. THIS is how Newton's laws were superceded by Einstein's theory of relativity when the former did NOT work with heavenly bodies. Now, Einstein's theories are waiting to be superceded by a better "theory of everything" covering Quantum phenomena.

Pranam guruji ,I have some questions, I know that god has created this universe and all conscious being but why did he created it,and moksha, nirvan, or Maha samadhi is the ultimate goal of human being in gyan marg ,how will know that I am gradually progressing, and is this one life time sufficient enough to get Maha samadhi ,I also understand that this will of getting Maha samadhi is also bondage, so I have not so strong desire to get it ,please guide me

When we say someone died, the body has lost its ability to conduct the life since it has perished. Since we, each person around is identifying himself/herself with his/her respective body+mind setup(as I am), we have the habit of telling the death of a body as the death of the person. It is an error of mixing two levels of "order of realities"(purusha and prakriti) and say "person died" for the body's death. In another view point it's not wrong to respect kshetra even though kshetragnya(purusha) is no more active in the kshetra(prakriti) which is declared as dead. It is simply a way of addressing. It is like the bulb is fused but electricity is intact.
One thing to be noted.... If I take myself as this body+mind setup then I die when this body+mind is dead (for me nothing exists after death). If I am clear that I am not this body+mind setup then whatever happens to this (kshetra, prakriti) is not a significant issue for the "I". When a bulb fuses it is not a topic of discussion for the electricity which was keeping it alive so far.
Almost all explanations are a comparison to our everyday life, wakeful state. As if this reality is the only one that's significant, and the most fundamental. That is how we treat it at least.
The other important aspect is that we are using this reality to comprehend something else, a different existence.
But we can only do so using the faculties of our reality. So our point of view can only be this reality.
Another analogy for this is, using a lower state of consciousness to understand a higher state.
Any understanding will only be a form of the lower state.
In actuality there is no higher or lower, more or less fundamental, it's just variations in cognition.

**Enlightenment as per Advaita vision can be summarised as given below**
If enlightenment happens to you in this life itself, only then you can realise the freedom thereby you can experience that all pleasure/pain are utterly meaningless.
But If enlightenment happens in the next birth then that enlightenment is not yours, it is for somebody with some other body+mind (what is the use !)
So it is wise to get enlightened now & here such that you realise that you were never bound and there is no necessity for a liberation because as per Advaita vision as such no one is bound and hence no one needs to get liberated also.
This state of "BUDDHI" one should achieve through a systematic SELF ENQUIRY, in this life itself !
Ultimately BUDDHI is the agent for binding or liberation. If it gets settled then the game comes to an end.
How to diagnose whether the BUDDHI has reached the state of liberation?
Buddhi can itself keep on monitoring these two parameters within !
1. Absence of sense of doership & enjoyer ship (kartrutwa & bhoktrutwa bhava) in it.
2. Absence of me & mine syndrome (dehaatma bhava) in it.
If both are zero in the psycho then it indicates that the buddhi is resting in its Abode(Paramatma) comfortably.

Kshetra is quality and not prakriti, which stands for material. Don't get excited thinking your body as bulb and your consciousness as electricity as electricity is not perennial and needs to be generated by generator.

Don't take the metaphor verbatim. Please mean in the following manner(This is told by Swami Chinmayananda)
If the bulb has a "buddhi" then that buddhi must realise that Electricity is the Atma(Sathya vastu/ Purusha) and all the others in the electrical appliances world are Anaatma(mithya/prakriti). We should NOT stretch this example further (in any direction).
No metaphor will be wrong as long as it is not stretched as per our own idea. Metaphors should be handled carefully and dispensed carefully!
Body dies but consciousness dont die which may put on another body .live with awareness that might be the solution of life.
Swamiji from my own experience I can say that when I sleep I cant experience external world at all because my senses are not interacting with external world. In dreams I have experience because my mind but in deep sleep I don't have any experience though I am there it just mean I can't have any experience without body and mind though I exist. Body is instrument for experience like if experience are not dependent on body then why blind people don't have experience of seeing ??
blind people actually do report visions and experiences of seeing in their dreams

Yesterday I was listening to a Ted talk video where a scientist was saying Artificial General Intelligence is 5 years away at this point(if we allow AI research to develop unregulated). If AGI is really possible, then consciousness is just a result of the physical objects. Even though the consciousness of the AI may be in different form than humans, it may still definitely be a kind of consciousness.
There is general acceptance that humans are more than just their body or aspiring to be more than themselves, we all want more meaning to this life than we can perceive, that is not same as some robot or AI using software and database acting like human

Consider the biological body as just a machine that manifests consciousness (the comet in space reflecting the light of the sun analogy). Similarly, any AGI would just be a different vehicle to manifest consciousness.
The key differences are sentience (in most cases) with the ability & innate urge to reproduce ad infinitum. No matter WHAT the processing capabilities of a machine, they will NEVER be "life".

communication is a sensory experience like swami says I infer based on similarity that the inner dialog of another is similar for all... externally we have language ... some similar and somehow we communicate and exchange a fraction of thoughts and emotions... in the moment... but later on the person could have a different set of thoughts and emotions about same context and we wouldn't even know of the change ... e.g. I talk to someone and we collectively think based on XYZ this person is not a good person... but later the other person gained different perspective and has become a devotee of this person...we haven't met them and still hold the common ground regarding person until we recalibrate our thinking when we meet... so physical communication has limitations and is bound by time and space and when we don't meet someone for long so much could have changed in them that at times we feel we are meeting a "new" person body is same software different ... (frequency of exchange plays a role .. time for familiarity etc) ...similarly we aren't equipped to tap into someone after they are dead as our limitation is to only connect with physical... and that too with limitations like mentioned above... there is hardware .. there is software.. sukshma that expresses through hardware like on a monitor and loops feeds back to sukshma ... and there is electricity ( brahman).. only the hardware dies.. the software migrates.. or is transferred ... just like a video game with scores from previous games saved... and the avatar playing the game has certain abilities / powers accrued... and is trying to move to next level... loosely put..

Consciousness witnesses the death too ?
It seems to me that all the work done by Spiritualism and related fields of inquiry could be brought to bear on this question. People who have died have, indeed, been interviewed. People have died and have come back to describe the experience. All this evidence indicates that when the body dies, the person remains as they were, except at their best. Physical death is just the outer sheath dropping off. As I understand, death is an opportunity for Moksha. Otherwise, it is just a change of rooms--the person, their personality, their sense of identity, is still there. It's a vacation, a time for reflection, and so-on before the next birth. Really, it's not the big deal we make it because of identifying with the physical body.
It is possible that consciousness of a person continue to exist after his or her death. But how can we be sure that is does? I think that was really the question asked to Maharaj and to my understanding it was not answered.
The analogy between individual consciousnesses being reflections of Brahman and reflections of the sun in small pots of water, provides a possible explanation of the relationship between individual consciousnesses and the Brahman. I am looking for an argument that it is actually so and there can be no other explanation. This question is immensely important to me and I would sincerely appreciate if Maharaj Sarvapriyanandaji kindly answers this question.🙏
Your question is exactly my question. It is through this consciousness experienced through having this body I am aware. When gone there is no individuality to experience consciousness or at its best a general awareness like in deep sleep.

The reason we think after death it all stops is because the consciousness that is able to experience consciousness in and through an individual body will be gone.

Good evening. Why did a Sage like Nisargadatta Maharaj sometimes say that when the physical body dies the I-am also dies? We know that the I-am or consciousness survives the death of the physical body! On other occasions he emphasized samsara and the cycle of birth and death, making it clear that consciousness not only survives the death of the food-body but it can be reborn. How to harmonize this?

Ego dies if we realize our true self that is brahman..You will keep taking birth till you get enlightened..One can also destroy the ego, as mentioned in Shrimad Bhagawt Gita is by selfless actions (Niskam karma)..
Good question. My understanding - based on what I have read about after-death accounts and reincarnation experiences - is that the "I-Consciousness" does not die with the body. The "I" has been likened to a sword and the body to a sheath. When the sword is withdrawn from the sheath, the sheath becomes empty but the sword which is the real essence is very much there. But your question was somewhat different, You were asking how can an entity (another word for consciousness) be reborn if we assume the "I" is dead? The answer seems to be that within all of us there are actually two "I's". One "I" is that associated with our present body and our present embodied personality. This "I" survives the body but gradually fades away out of active consciousness (but remains in the subconscious as memory of the entity). The other "I" - which is the more permanent I - is the sum-total (as it were) of all the "I's" that the soul entity has experienced in the course of its cosmic existence when it has taken birth in different bodies and also possibly in different realms. This permanent "I" is the one that undergoes repeated rebirth until final dissolution when it attains union with the Absolute which is God or Brahman. This explanation appears to serve as a reconciliation of the apparent contradiction you mentioned. Our present "I" survives for a while after physical death; how long it survives is dependent on how attached the soul has been to the physical existence it has just emerged from. For instance, if in my present birth I have been deeply attached to a person or object, after death the chains of that attachment or those attachments will perpetuate my identification with that body and so the "I-ness" of that particular life will endure for a longer time till I discard it and move on. (Incidentally this explains the existence of ghosts who are nothing but earthbound spirits that are trapped within the memories and attachments they formed during a particular lifetime.) Edgar Cayce, the great American mystic and psychic, has said that when we are alive in this earthly realm we actually have three levels of consciousness operating. One is the conscious mind that keeps us going in our day to day life which is totally based on our present embodied existence. The second is the sub-conscious mind that is the storehouse and repository of all our experiences and memories gained hitherto both in the present life and the lives we have undergone in the past (which is the source tapped by past life regression analysts). The third is the Superconscious which is actually the Supreme Consciousness i.e. God or Brahman from Whom we all emerge and to Whom we return. When our physical body dies (says Cayce) our present conscious mind also dies (in due course) and our present subconscious mind becomes - in our disembodied state - the conscious mind for us whilst the Superconscious becomes the Subconscious. In other words death of the body brings us closer to God but not close enough yet to be merged in Him.

I was about to say it as well. The first "I" referred to here is the Ego that is a consequence of this body and the mind, all of which die when the body dies. The second "I" he has referred to is the Consciousness (keeping aside for a moment, the different schools of philosophies saying it's only one - Advaita - or there is an Individual consciousness & Super consciousness) which is essentially the carrier of Karma leading to birth-death cycles.
The self is never born nor does It die it is not that not having been it comes into being It is unborn eternal changeless ever Itself according to Bhagavad

What makes one think that a living body has Consciousness whilst the dead body doesn't?
I think most of them don't understand purpose of vedantic studies..Basically, it is aimed to mitigate unsettled nature of jeeva. Please dont confuse beyond this. Sage Baratwaja was in sorrow when Sukar left for moksha even when universe resonate and indicate that sukar has attained brahmam That is the power of maya. Please dont try to understand only through vedantic texts.

Mj, you say that every religion including Islam says that I am not this body itself. Will you kindly refer any Ayat of any Surah indicating so. Pranam.
But Swami, the point is that individual consciousness can only be experienced through this individuality. The individual gone, conscious observer will be gone.

A :- The body, mind, Consciousness etc are material/Jad (Because, consciousness arises from the body, So when there is no Body there is no Consciousness→SBG 7.4 & 7.5)
Generally, when a person is born, he/she associated with the body and by associating with the body ego arises. The ego identifies itself with the body. Thus this ego acquires a name, form, qualities etc. When I alive, the feeling of my presence is always there. Like I am writing, I am listening music, I am doing this, I am doing that, I am an engineer, I am a scientist etc etc.
From Vedanta I know that my true nature is pure consciousness, the Sachidanand Atma and this body, mind, ego etc are belong to prakrati which generally at the time of death perishes.
So when the body dies mind, thought, ego, intellect etc also die. But, when I understand my true nature as Atmān my consciousness becomes pure and thus it stops from false identifications like attaching itself with the body, mind, prakrati, ego etc. So, when the body of an enlightened person dies, the person not dies.
Because, the person is no more the body, mind, ego, consciousness, intellect etc. So, what happens is after the death of the body mind, ego, intellect etc all die and the enlightened person remains as pure awareness (aware of it's existence).This pure awareness is very similar to that of Permanent Deep Sleep (You can call it "Turiya") where there is no me or the world, there is just awareness (Forget duality there is not even singularity).

I agree, but deep sleep is not experiencing consciousness that can be experienced through having a body and mind to experience it. Remembering my own deep sleep, there is no glory to that general awareness. As they say there is awareness but nothing to see what is interesting in that? Somehow scary and lonely.
1:29 minute - Vedanta says that only one atma exist . Jain dharm says that there are infinite souls. Each has separtate entity. It actually never dies nor takes birth, only paryay changes.

as Lord Krishna's explains in BhagavadGita " Atma Na Hanthi Na Hanthaye" "soul Neither dies neither does it Kill" ..now saying body dies is not correct because Body never had life&consciousness in it by itself ..it is soul that gives body life&consciousness, so saying body dies is wrong as it never had life in it by itself in the firstplace..yes you can say body is damaged or degraded ..soul leaves your body when your body is so damaged or degraded that it cannot produce enough energy for the sustainance of soul
The Gita only speaks of one consciousness, when you squeeze out an advaitic interpretation of the Gita. If you don't do this, it's pretty clear that the Gita speaks of multiple atmas (purushas), just as Sankhya does.

Not a very satisfying answer. I am not sure if SANKHYA considers many PURUSHAS . On one side ADWATYA says everything is happening in consciousness and on other hand there is no answer as WHY is it happening . I have a dream , which is based on MY thoughts and experiences . What is the reason for the dream of the CONSCIOUSNESS . In My dream I the characters have no free will and they act as I WANT . So what about the dream of CONSCIOUSNESS , if we are the characters do we have free will or not ? Too many questions and then we don't have clear cut answers

Very unsatisfying answer. The question was how do we know the (hypothetical) soul survives bodily death. The answer only at best undermines the argument that the soul necessarily dies when the body does yet fails to provide any positive argument as to why it in fact survives bodily death. And this latter issue was really what the questioner was asking about in the first place. Interestingly the Swami here could only end by saying that his argument makes it “more probable” though not certain the soul survives death (a conclusion, by the way, which I think is not true, either).
Because the idea is we are not a soul in a body. We are consciousness in which the world appears. It's like if you play a virtual reality game and your character dies. Where's the proof you are alive. YOu cant because the material world is different to the world of you. There's no proof in the material world because you aren't material.

Kind Sir...If you asked 10,000 people of your question; you would get untold "different" answers! Oh yes indeed. So, I believe this...
As a 92 yr Born Again Christian; I will answer it this way: There are "two beings" from Creation, when they die. 1. NON Born Again's and 2. Born Again's! And IF it's not born again; they will truly die, EXCEPT for their flesh, etc, in a funeral place. In a concrete casket. If they are not in a funeral place, they will just rot to nothing. But...
IF the Born Again dies; the same as the non Born Again's; EXCEPT...they have a "2nd birth". But it is not made of "flesh, blood and bones". Rather; It's a new Heavenly "Spiritual Birth".*
And that being; will go into a "spiritual sleep" when they die. UNTIL the "1st resurrection" by Jesus (the only true God Almighty, ever!)
Then they become again flesh...AND spiritual beings. But the non Born Again will be in the 2nd resurrection. Thus, they are a true fleshly being again. Regardless of how they died. Now, the end of the World comes (which is soon I believe)...
And ALL go to a "Judgment Day". Where Jesus determines which is going to Heaven or Hell. IF they are Born Again's they will be sent to the New Heaven forever. And their fleshly body is destroyed. Because they get a NEW Body!
But woe, woe, woe! IF they are NON Born Again; Jesus will cast them into a "Burning Lake of Fire"; which is Hell. And they will perish; where satan and his devil, his beast and his false prophet. And they never perish!

And this is why the dead should always be buried, never cremated. Nobody actually knows if the corpses feel anything or not. Just because there's no outwardly expressions, that doesn't mean the soul is not still attached enough to suffer the burning of the body. Just imagine, if it were true, what you would be putting your loved ones through! Cast your cultural biases & egos aside, and choose wisdom :)
Simple answer to the question asked, is we do not exist after death. We get totally annihilated on death. But, Sarbapiyananda knows, his talk will flop, if he says so.
