I have seen the lids at Walmart in my area. You can also order online for oickup at the store, just make sure to add no substitutions before checking out, and after ordering the last item. Otherwise you might not get what you asked for exactly.
Sometimes you get lucky at thrift stores. I have also seen a video where folks were saying they reuse the lids, when canning regular wet foods. They said they never had a problem.
I would suggest reusing lids to pickle vegetables, because both salt and vinegar help preserve as well.
Dry pack canning obviously you can. No limits on reusing, as no heat is involved in the process.

For those that aren't aware, the green top from Kraft Parmesan Cheese fits the regular mouth jar! It is great as a dispenser for nuts, M&Ms, etc. The side of the top that has the three holes, works great for a straw! The store brands of the cheese also fit and often have different colors like red or black!

I just vaccum sealed 22 lbs of flour and what I did was to put approximately 9 cups of flour or 3.5 lbs into a brown paper lunch bag. slightly tap the bag a few times to settle it then fold down the excess bag only once and tape it with just a small piece then slipped it into my sealing bag then vaccum sealed it up. Became just like a rock.

One of my best purchases EVER was a Food Saver at a Thrift Store for $5. I figured if it didn’t work I wasn’t out much but it was kinda life changing. I use my used canning lids and some antique blue half gallon jars I inherited from my mama. Great for bulk food crackers and snacks from my Amish market, my brown sugar and it also makes it very economical to buy the entire cart full of Oreos marked down to $1 at Big Lots - they will last for YEARS. 😊 Great video.

July, 2022 - I just found vacuum seal canisters from a small Kansas company that makes chamber vacs. Three sizes for $39.99. The tallest will hold a quart mason jar inside it and seal it with a hose that fits other vacuum machines as well as their own. It will seal the jars that we normally throw away, too. The canisters are a vac chamber themselves so will save my canning jars for canning and I can use commercial jars for dehydrated food, leftovers, and lunchbox food for Hubs. Made by Avid Armor.

I used oxygen removers in the jars with butter cookies and ritz crackers. That plus the dry vacuum seal worked really well. When we opened a jar and needed to close it back up with unused product we just put a lid and ring on it, finger tight. The oxygen eliminators actually pulled a seal! I bought mine from Harvest Right (the same folks that manufacture the freeze dryers) they are called Oxygen Absorbers and they look like the packets that you see in other products but they are specifically for food preservation. Originally I put these in my dried beans jars to kill any kritters that might be hiding in there. They worked really well.

Actually we reuse the foodsaver vac bags often, depending on what was stored in them. They just continually get shorter as the ends are trimmed off to open the bags used for dry goods like rice, beans, flour (in paper 'lunchbags' to keep the dust under control) etc.
I think you could load your saltines quicker with less 'adjusting' if you just opened the end of the sleeve and put that into the jar, then pull off the sleeve, leaving a neat stack in the jar, then fill in the rest of the space as you were doing.

I've got a bunch of the blue, green and purple Mason jars that I bought years ago when they were a lot cheaper than they are today. I think I will use them for dry canning. Thank you for the video. Have a Blessed Day everyone.

Just last week, I was set to buy a handheld food saver..had it in my Amazon cart, but really balked at the price. Happened to think to check Ebay, and found several for about $33-35 including shipping, for buy now..and was about to spring for one. THEN I spotted a used one for $12..shipping raised it to $20.40. I haven't used it yet, but it looks like it was opened and tried once, possibly without the jar lid attachment. Another video I saw said results were iffy without the attachments. So, try Ebay!

I have read some tips to make sure the jars stayed sealed. One person put the lids on a heat pad to soften the rubber and another wiped the blue seal with a damp cloth. I think the last tip was just to make sure the blue seal doesn't have any bits to allow an air leak. Just make sure the damp rag doesn't come in contact with the jar or product.

I use my Weston vacuum sealer with the tubing that has a fitting on each end. One end plugs into the sealing cap, the other end fits into the Weston unit. Does a great job. I have to put powdered foods into a non-ziplock bag, then lightly twist the bag and lay the twist down before I put the cap on to seal if I don’t powder gets sucked up, makes a mess and prevents a seal. I also find that if I warm the lids, whether by hot water or oven, then dry them the lids stay sealed better and longer.

A bunch of years ago my mother purchased me a FoodSaver and I love it! It still works like it's brand new and I buy my bags off Amazon a whole lot cheaper than through food saver. I've got to buy the vacuum ceiling tops and the hose though because they have gotten lost in 352 moves in my lifetime overseas and back and across and back and now I'm back here in New England to stay.

I have $160 pink velvet blackout drapes in my pantry because it's one of my spare bedrooms and those curtains were meant for my living room and they looked awful! So, I had my caregiver nail them up in the pantry and I've turned the heat off in that room and if I had to I would keep the door shut and crack the window but right now we're in the negative numbers for temperature so there isn't any place in my house that isn't cold except the bathroom!

I have that type of food sealer...it works pretty well...but I do keep an eye on it...have had a couple of fails...I have found if I suck the air out twice I get a better seal that seems to last. Great info leisa. Thanks...also those lids can be reused for vacuum sealing... not for canning...I write dried on them so I know which lids they are.

Im in Arkansas..I keep trying Walmart...we are older and shopping was hard so we were doing pick up for a couple of years before the covid....no jars in my local area as of aug 9... Not at Walmart.. dollar general.. tractor supply ..Lowe's target or big lots...I refuse to pay the inflated prices at Amazon....although I may have found lids there...small mouth...I've been canning for a few years and I saw this coming but didn't have the money to do more than I could... SSI budget you know...I did get wide mouth lids a couple of months ago and I have the jars to do my tomatoes in them....but none left for anything else.

  • @beckyshook3526

if you have a canister that is for vac sealing you van seal little jelly jars even spaghetti sauce jars so save their lids the lids now have the ring of rubber in the lid you wash and dry well then put like choc chips in put the lid on put in canister then either insert hose to port in lid or into one of the jar attachments you showed and put it over port in lid and vac seal' this saves canning jars for canning with canning shortage this works well remember to release pressure in canister by pushing button on lid you won't be able to open canister without releasing pressure then take out the sealed jar label and date... one other very very important thing if you are sealing a powder like flour you must must must cut a coffee filter or paper towel the sizr of the lid you use then lay on top of the flour then finish with lid and vac seal if you do not do this the vac sucks up the fine particles and Kills the machine and cannot be repaired

It seems to me the vacuum attained with that gadget is kind of anemic.
It would be interesting to see a test with different levels of vacuum and perhaps nitrogen flushing.
Also I suspect if you were to warm the used lids, you might have a greater success rate as the heat would make the rubber a bit more supple.

Leisa, Leisa..... It took me a year before I was ready to tackle this project. I love the fact that you are storing candy. We all need it... sometimes. I noticed you didn't take the wrapper off the Hersey kisses, which I was so happy to see. What about miniature chocolate bars and other types like, rolo, peanut butter cups, twix, etc. Can I seal them without taking out of the individual wrappers? I hope so because I suspect it would be one big clump. I ask because hubby came home with the biggest bag of assorted chocolate bars and I don't see us giving it all away even if it's a handful at a time. I would love to seal a bunch for cooking, surprising hubby with a little treat, as well as the gkids. I suspect it will be okay since you did the Hersey kisses but I wanted to check with the pro. Thanks, Marcia.. your Maine Grammy
PS. He recently came home from Sam's club with a giant bag of peppermint candy. Guess I'll be processing that also. 🍬🤦
