Restoring faded and oxidized paint

  • In this video I clean up and restore the finish on my truck. I washed it first, then used a mothers clay bar kit, then used meguiars ultimate compound, then I used turtle wax cleaning polish, and finally turtle wax hard shell wax. I’m sure there are better products available but this is what I had. It can be done by hand but is much easier and faster with a dual action polisher. I used a Bauer da polisher from the HarborFreight with the green medium pad for the compound, the yellow fine pad for the polish, and the white extra fine for the wax.
I attribute my successes to god and give him the glory.

Wonderful work, congratulations. It will look great pulling that camper, but you can rest easy as the powertrain you built will do its job. Looks make the youngsters happy power train functioning as designed makes the operator happy. Congratulations. Take care,

Thank you.I’m always worried about breaking down when we go on trips. This truck should be more reliable than the other one having the manual. There is half the hoses and stuff on this one just without the automatic cooling system. I tried to upgrade the trouble parts when I was going on the spending spree.

Wonderful job. This video gives me the confidence to follow this sequence of steps. I have an old Black and Decker buffer with a lambswool pad but it has a learning curve such that one can easily burn thru the paint. I think these harbor freight pads and the dual action Bauer buffer is the way to go. I think I will skip the clay bars unless the surface feels rough after the fine joint compound step. Thank you so much. Kind Regards, Craig

It was surprisingly easy with the da polisher. This was the first time I had used one. I was a bit nervous at first but it’s really forgiving. I watched a few more polishing videos and from what they said. You don’t need a lot of compound and I probably used more than necessary and hold the pad as flat as you can. The clay bar is to get the impurities out of the paint and get it as clean as you can before the compound. I would do it but I don’t know if it’s a requirement. I’d recommend taping off the plastic trim and stuff you don’t want wax on. I didn’t i wish I did. I wish you luck with yours.

That truck cleaned up really nice. A little paint on the wheels and it will look perfect!

Thank you. I’ll probably get some new ones in the future. A few of them looked like they might have loosened up and egged the holes out a bit.

Man my arm hurt from watching the first part. Night and day difference. You need to come to NC in the spring the pine pollen looks like yellow smoke when its windy.

That’s some serious pollen. We were at a campground that was like that one year. We left early because of it. I wonder why the pine trees pump out so much pollen. They don’t make fruit or anything.

many years ago, i applied blue coral to my mustang on a hot sunny day. it took me 2 days to rub it off and it did not look good. i haven't waxed a car since lol.

I did something like that once. A guy told me you need to let the wax dry otherwise your just wiping it off. Yeah he must have had some different product because it took some aggressive rubbing to get it off after that. I got a Life lesson: don’t let the wax dry.

I think that the only decent way to apply / rub off cutting compound, polish or anything like that is to do it under cover. In the sunsine, you're just asking for grief as it dries on the hot metal.

I was thinking the same thing when I edited the video. I recorded it over the course of a week, not because it takes that long but I kept getting interrupted with rain and work so I didn’t see the start finish like I did when I put the contrast section of the video together.

I think you were waxing wrong
    Right hand-wax on
    Left hand-wax off,
