How To Treat Heavily Oxidized Paint! - Chemical Guys

  • Have you ever wondered how to fix faded paint? Oxidation is caused by many different reasons but lack of paint protection like sealant and wax will leave the surface exposed to the elements which can permanently damage the finish.
    Prepare the surface by washing away as much loose debris before decontaminating with a clay bar to extract embedded filth. In today's video Nick takes us step by step through the proper steps of machine polishing when it comes to heavily oxidized single stage paint. The micro-abrasives in polish remove a fine layer of top coat which reveals fresh paint.

    This was for sure helpful as I'll be working on a Volvo 850 with similar issues of oxidation. The paint I'm dealing with is quite a bit better, with only slight oxidation but the customer wants to protect from future damage so I'll be ceramic coating it after correction. Should be fun!

    OK, I do not see above. I am a 77 y.o. retiree and unfamiliar with a lot of things...and no, I was never a detailer, but did my own mechanic/painting. My 72 PU is painted with metallic enamel about 4 years ago and the oxidation is pretty heavy. I never waxed it, or put polish on it during this time. My question is: you reference spraying the pad with PAD Conditioner?? Or Spray? What is it? I do not see it in your list of items used above.......

    • @ChemicalGuys

      Hi Kenneth! Pad Conditioner lubricates the polishing pads to reduce wear and tear as well as reduce excess heat and friction which can dry out compound/polish before it has properly broken down. Check out this link.

    • @holnugget
      @holnugget Před 3 lety

      That is very worrisome. When you see that much paint come out on the white pad, that means the clear coat is non-existent. You are just cutting off and thinning out the paint. Before long, you will be down to metal. I would measure the thickness of the paint and re-clear if there is enough left.

    I did this with my e36 original paint job with a different product. But I gave it a light wet sand first. The thing came out like a freaking mirror!! Now my issue is after about 2 weeks the paint starts to dull again.. is there another step to retain the shine? Or am I using the wrong product? Plz help

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  Před 2 lety

      Hey! After the paint correction, apply your favorite coatings to lock in shine. HydroSlick easily lays down a durable barrier of protection.

    You mean to tell me that entire car is evenly oxidized or did you just sand it down previously? Im looking a car that is restored from natural elements, not man made sanding.

    Did you have to clay the car before you polished?

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Rodney! Yes, it is important that the surface is totally clean before polishing. Using a clay bar will reduce the chances of marring and promote the best finish.

    Nice result, but curious why you didn't go to a V34 or V32 product? If you had wanted to spend the time, wet sanding it first seems like it would have made a bigger difference.

    • @AdventuresGaming
      @AdventuresGaming Před 4 lety

      Wet sanding will just be an aggressive approach and cause that to remove the clear coat off the car which will cause damage to the car unless you apply the clear coat back

    Is it ok to use quick detailer spray on the pad as a pad conditioner too?

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  Před 2 lety

      Hey Bryan! In a pinch, you can use your favorite quick detail spray to moisten the pad but this should be a temporary solution.
