I’ve “saved” 3 Jaguar cars now. They’ve since become a passion and I love them. I have an 08 XJ, an 04 x-type 5spd (with well over 200k miles), and a 2000 XJ8. They’ve all needed work, and now all run like new. A common misconception is that Jaguars aren’t reliable. Wrong. They want to be driven. The more you drive them the longer they’ll last. If you let them sit around they won’t survive.

I have a 2000 Jaguar (S-Type). I had the front upper control arms replaced (after the ball and joint wore right off while I was driving).
And yes, I kind of hate myself, but in all honesty - the A/C runs cold and the comfort in the front is excellent (can’t say the same for the back).
I don’t have much cabin noise and it drives like a tank. I even used it for deliveries at one point for kicks and my manager liked riding in it. I don’t recommend putting too many miles on it, though. I broke it out (pre-COVID-19) for the weekends for brunch or for dates. I love it.
Definitely not for the faint of heart ($3400 first year, $2300 the second).

Well, being a 2003 model, this Jag is a badged Ford, so the buck stops in the USA. The UK has sold off its volume car industry to foreigners, probably to avoid this kind of unfair criticism. Between 1994 and 1997 the Jaguar straight six (AJ16) engine was at it's best. Those are the bulletproof engines and transmissions that are still on the road today, whereas the V engines were less reliable up until at least 2006 when the XF arrived.

  • @andrewhaywood1770
    @andrewhaywood1770 Před 5 lety +10

You may be thinking of Jaguars of the 70's and 80's with the Lucas electronics issues. Ford totally overhauled Jags electronics in the 90's so they were at least as reliable as BMWs or MBs of the time. You were spot on with the plastic tensioners and nikasil. But if you upgrade to metal tensioners and since nikasil eating sulfur gas was eliminated in the US in the early 2000s these can power on well past 200K. I'm guessing at 252K transmission drum has been sorted too, as I understand it this wasn't as much of an issue in the Mercedes 5G found in the XJR.
You can still get cheap XJ8s that are smoother than 95% of the cars on the road today and surprisingly fast XJRs. I've owned several and the only electronics issue I've had is the ABS/no traction which is just a bad solder in the ABS control module, a few hours to fix. These cars are a steal.

    1. Buy an expensive car on the cheap (mechanical problems are encouraged but not compulsory)
    2. Do a walkaround and short test drive to talk about the car
    3. Bring it over to the Car Wizard's workshop for him to analyse and explain said mechanical problems.
    4. Spend tons of money on the car to fix it.
    5. Keep it around or sell it on for a profit/loss (Loss is preferable to add humour and irony)

to fix all those dents would be a week's work if you did it yourself, but Hoovie doesn't do any work himself other than the odd 'holding a spanner' shot for his videos.

Once it’s all fixed up it’ll still be a Jaguar and it’ll wear out and break really fast and the parts can be super expensive. A money pit.

Speaking as a Brit - who owns a Jag-u-er - it always amuses me hearing Yanks say Jag-war.
Still, I do love Hoovie - it would be great to see him on the Grand Tour with Clarkson, Hammond and May, one day.

By the looks of it, not much at all. I can tell because the exterior condition is really tatty. And generally with these cars, if you're going to look after the mechanical, you're going to look after the body as well. I imagine all this thing has had to keep it on the road is oil changes and spark plugs, maybe another wheel bearing.

I have a 2000 XJ8L (base model) with 239k miles on the original drivetrain. Engine has DEFINITELY lost compression as it doesn't like to go over 3,500 rpm as you floor it, even when using the jgate shifter. Transmission is still great, electronics are flawless, body is straight. Cracked windshield, broken sunroof, no heat, leaks coolant from the reservoir, but I daily it and I love every minute of it (except for 12mpg on premium)

Dump it! Right away! Unless you have some really strong sentimental reasons to not to do so.
Your friend will earn way more than the 200 bucks just for selling your pieces of it.
And like you said yourself, it might actually help to keep other Jags in good shape :)
