No. Upshift should ALWAYS be pull toward you. This is one of the very few cars that have that right.
True. Those M5s had robot to automaticly change the gears so thats the reason you feel like its like delay.
That's weird. I don't care if it's the "right" way. The "wrong" way is much more intuitive in my opinion.
@@car_lov3r it makes more sense to have it like this BMW has it. When accelerating, weight shifts back so it makes sense to pull towards you to upshift. Under braking, you're enetria is going forward, so pushing up makes sense to shift down a gear
Correct
Yes, it's easier to pull back under acceleration and vise versa under braking
9:15 that's actually the right way! Up is down, and down is up. Race cars have it this way because it works with you when you want to change gears during acceleration and braking!

The shifter is not upside down. That is the correct way it should be. When you are speeding up, and upshifting it is more natural to pull the shifter back. Even more so, when decelerating and downshifting to push on the shifter. It is totally awkward the other way, if you are slowing and your weight is being pushed forward, to then pull back on the shifter, and pushing you even more forward.
sHillChannel In all fairness I’ve heard that before because in the early steptronic shifting bmws orientation was the way Hoovey thought it should be
Fargo Holmes yea, as I sit in my 2000 bmw 323 with the backwards forward + back for -. It’s a good thing that it’s not used in that mode.
Just like on an aircraft...
Every rally car, pneumatic gearbox car has push to down and pull to up..
I ended up with a Mini automatic, and I was very please to know that BMW had kept the towards yourself as an up shift and away as a down shift. It was very helpful while taking it onto a dirt road.
That kid will have nightmares about check engine lights for the rest of her life.

Na she will give it to her dad to make a video out of.
Lol thats 90% of the population
Think about the weight transfer during acceleration and braking and you'll realize push forward to downshift and pull backward to upshift is the correct way.
Idk I disagree why its that way. I feel like it mimics the pull from 1st to second gear shifter. Other than that I feel like it is wrong. My audi, on the infotainment system the knob moves the opposite direction for down, and that seems like a mistake.
I agree! Forward is downshift, backward is upshift. It’s a natural feeling
@@snotface8 if you've ever driven on a track before you'd know that under hard braking your body is pushed forward and pushing the shifter to downshift is much easier. Same when you're in full acceleration your body is pushed back in the seat so pulling the shifter to upshift is much more natural. Every race car with a sequential shifter works this way.
They changed this with the e90 models, I had an e46 that I took to the dealership and they gave me a loaner e90 and didn't tell me it was different shift pattern... I downshifted in traffic and almost rammed the car in front of me lol

This car should've gone to a specialist in the first place. Swapping the entire transmission out and throwing parts at the car without even scanning it using ISTA is just asking for more trouble.
All of the complaints about the SMG are valid if old, and anyone who drives one more than a week will get the hang of the gearbox. It's still a weak point, but to say it makes it undrivable is dramatic.
$5k for bearings and vanos refurb is about $2k high, and you're still having it done by someone who admittedly doesn't know the car very well. As great as the wizard is, these things are so friggin finicky, I don't think I'd have him tearing into the bottom end.
Hoovie cannot be convinced that anyone other-than Wizard can/should work on his cars. Funny, the only one that runs right is the McLaren (which requires dealership service for any warranty work).
@@MichaelJames-lz7ni he seems to be a pretty good general mechanic honestly, but specialists do exist for a reason.

@@joakimquensel597 Without having my hands on the car I can give you a 100% confident "maybe?"
A lot of the SMG problems are now being traced to frayed wires and worn out $14 relays. The first summer I had my car it started having trans issues, the first diagnosis I got from my usual mechanic was that it needed a clutch, p plate, flywheel and related hardware, some $4,500 all in. Took it for a 2nd opinion and it was just the slave cylinder. (still a $1500 job at shop rates because you have to drop the gearbox and bellhousing)
More importantly, the car would've been fixed properly. No bent tooth on the flywheel, and no used totally unknown transmission and related bits.
i agree...i have an 05' maserati QP with duoselect and once you learn to blip the throttle correctly the gearbox becomes a lot less of an issue

Techs like that bmw dude are worth their weight in gold. Too bad the dealerships rarely compensate them appropriately
m00nraker4545 well he DOES daily an E60 M5 though...
Some of those mechanics average $35+ per labor hour.
I agree with you. I worked at a privately owned VW restoration place in New Orleans and I learned a lot working on the same models and years. The dealerships that train consistently to a proficient and diligent mechanic can create some knowledgeable techs. We knew about the older model fine points and the techs at the dealerships were schooled in the brand new stuff.
Indeed, cars have gotten massively more complex, you need way more tools to work on them, and rates (to the mechanic) are unchanged.
That is one of the biggest fails today, probably the car is good, but dealerships are crap... and well the results is obvious
Interesting simple cure to a complex problem, it just goes to show, experience is gold when diagnosing mechanical issues.
Spanner heads rule!
You can tell the tech loves those cars and their V10 the way he's grinning while modulating the throttle!Passion right there!
Actually, forward being downshift and back as upshift is pretty much the way it normally works.

race transmissions have it this way as well, so forward being upshift and backwards being downshift is wrong

Push forward to downshift and back to upshift is the way it should be- you're going with the G forces instead of fighting them.
"do you need to take my college money again?" Jokes on you kid, it's already gone!
Still one of the best looking sedans ever designed!
It's normal for sequential gearboxes to move the shifter down to upshift. I know from rallying.
Or from any sequential gearbox ever, really.
@@343_GuiltySpark True. I just wanted to bring up a common example.
And thats how it should be. Because when you need to upshift, you are accelerating, being pushed back, so it is logical to go with the flow of movement and pull on the shifter to upshift, trying to fight the acceleration to upshift makes absolutely no sense and makes the car harder to control. And vice versa, if you are downshifting, you are probably decelerating, so you are thrown forwards.
Thank you for taking the time to type that all into your response. My thoughts exactly and you explained it well.
@Tom Yeah, don't make me start on how much I downshift instead of upshifting when I get to drive those cars(thankfully, I have a manual in my car) because it just feels wrong.

Shifting does make sense since when you are accelerating inertia pulls you back, and when you brake it pulls you forward.
Priča gluposti Hoovie
Came here to say this lol, almost every sequential transmission works like that
It makes perfect sense, but all VW cars have it reversed. Cant understand why.
Pulling back for the upshift is actually the correct setup. makes more sense because as you accelerate the G forces are pulling you back and vice versa. That's the way racing sequentials are setup.
The pull for change up and push for down makes perfect sense - think about which direction you are pushed/pulled under acceleration/deceleration - keep pulling back to change as you're pushed back to go faster, keep pushing forward to change down as you're pushed forward in the seat. Same in any rally/touring car.
"The worst transmission I have ever encountered" Try a first generation Smart ForTwo.
Also, pulling back on the gear lever to change up is correct.
Or the Ford Powershift in the Focus and Fiesta
it's correct in automatics built for girls, kid.
don't drive your mom's lexus.
"Also, pulling back on the gear lever to change up is correct." Couldn't agree more!
At least with some, you could just flip the wires on the controls and have it back like normal.
It makes much more sence to pull back the gear stick if you wanna change up. The g-force while accelerating makes it more comfortable to flick it back and the g-force while breaking throws your body forward just like you will throw the gear stick forward to down shift. It is the ultimate setup.
"Do not release clutch slowly" ... interesting message, given the lack of a clutch pedal!
Crank the shift speed up to 5 and use the paddles. The clutch is a consumable.
9:20 finally a car that has a proper way of shifting and he is compaining 🤣 the reason for that is when you are heavily breaking, it is easier for you to downshift in the forward direction

Down to upshift is 100% correct. You'll generally upshift more, and pulling down is more of a natural motion.
Great garage, cant wait to see what you stuff in it. The M5 is definitely temperamental, had an 06 awhile back and found that the bushings would wear in the lower control arms, throttle actuators go, and vanos high pressure line would need replacement in early 06/07 models. Picked up another 06 - project car needed motor and did the same preventive maintenance w used motor - rod bearings, bigger oil squirters for pistons, new throttle actuators, new clutch, cooling hoses, monoballs in lower arms, bmc filters w stock air boxes. These cars have hit rock bottom, so if you have dealt w those big tkt items - clutch and bearings, you should be fine. BTW - these are great track cars and really shine in M mode on a big track to stretch its legs. Also use 0w40 Mobil 1 oil and will switch to the 10w60 on the track. Not because it is dangerous...
You did not have to replace all 10 coils at 100k miles. People also think they have to replace brake sensors when they replace the pads.
Driving in M-mode will not burn up the clutch if the clutch is not slipping.
Actually you DO have to replace the brake sensor when replacing pads, even if it hasn't touched the rotor! Why? The BMW computer measured the resistance of that wire and identified it. If you do a brake reset and don't change the resistance (install new wire), the computer will soon revert back to "pads due soon". There is a trick though, if you were adamant about not switching wire - you can cut it shorter or lengthen it, anything to change the resistance value and get the computer to recognize it as a new wire.
@@aussie2uGA Whoever told you that, lied to you. It's not even a sensor. It's just a single wire that grounds when the pads wear down. You would know this if you ever worked on a BMW. Don't try and say you have done a brake job. Upload a video.

Thomas Knight Maserati engineers were on holiday in Australia and rented a Ford Falcon with the 6 speed ZF automatic transmission. They were so impressed with how it drove they made the transmission an option in later models.
Maserati is a horrible car !!!
Phillip Leeds Is this actually true ? 😂
Jelmerize Yes, it is. Local motoring press reported it at the time. We had those Falcons on our work fleet and they drove beautifully.
You've come so far. I think everybody wants to see you to finish this project. If you put a manual gear box in this car, it would truly be a timeless machine. Think about all of the people that have already given up on this car. If you could just push a little further, you will not only enhance this cars performance, but its rarity as well! The best of luck,
Dreams Come True! Great video!
Your kid talks like you, and looks like you bro it's so funny, it's giving me that Dr. Evil/Mini me thing. I'm dying over here
Maybe you should do an LS and manual transmission swap. It'll be the most reliable BMW ever. Trust me, I'm a doctor.
Why swap out a V10 for a fucking LS?
Just buy a Corvette ffs. I do back the idea of a manual swap thought.
@@MeDicen_Rocha your Corvette has 4 seats?
@@YTIndymann99 Have you heard about the Chevy SS?
@footballcoreano not only are you wrong, everything you said is completely unrelated to what anyone was saying
@@MeDicen_Rocha why swap out a v10 for an ls? The op answered your question already: reliability with the plus side of power and sound. This engine will grenade itself eventually and an ls will last a eternity, make more power for less money, and not sound like an annoying hairdryer.
A couple of things: moving the shifter up to shift down gear makes sense because when you are on hard breaking the G forces pushes you forward. Same thing for shifting gears up on hard acceleration. Second, to do a burnout you turn traction control off and floor it, it will rev to redline and drop the couch hard for you and then you get on the brakes. That's about a fraction of a second there.
Hey Hoovie, the shift backwards is still used to date on all high performance bmw, the logic behind this is to have the shifts move in the way your G-forces move...
So for e.g. if u shift up, ur G-forces are moving backwards so it makes sense to shift the lever back, and viceversa... just a note :D
1.Light a candle in the bmw
2.close the door
3.leave lol
It looks really good! Love the sound of a roaring v10 😈
Great video! Love your garage!
“Do you need to take my college money again” and that’s how you know you’re a true car guy LMAO
That is the most masochistic BMW to own ever! It's also the coolest! Enjoy it Hoovie!
he's selling it tho
What a sweet daughter you have just offering her college money again whenever you break another car
Broken exotic & Luxury cars = many many youtube views = $$ revenue for Tyler. It's entertainment (as the mystique of these cars are revealed - ie. there is NONE) and provides an important lesson for normal folk considering one of the Big Money Wasters.
Minor note: the Hall Effect is in the crank position sensor. The part on the flywheel which was bent is the tone ring that the Hall Effect detects.
I respect u sir. I drive a e38 740i and for me it costs alot of money to maintain. For now i have purchased everything to keep it running. I also go to a bmw specialist and the last fix were my shocks and that costed alot. In my opinion its worth it im afraid that i will never be able to enjoy a car more then this. All the E cara coming now
Complaining about the sequential shifter working the correct way is discrediting you a fair bit hoovie XD
Hoovie sucks. He is a whining pussy.
A lot!
To be fair Hoovie is not much of a sportscar guy.
Every time I get the urge to buy a BMW I will watch this.
Yep. He's put me off the marque! Not to mention reading forums.
Rob Bob buy an Audi instead, you save money, you get looks cause they look better, and they are more reliable.
@@user-zm7de9fc9x still unreliable because VW. every vw ive ever seen has a million check engine lights and has shifts like shit
@@user-zm7de9fc9x lol that was a good one ,I'm guessing you don't own an Audi.
Just get an F Series BMW (2016 up) or the G Series now. F-Generation has no problems.
Hi, I had an M3 E46 with SMG2 and I totally understand why people hate it. But I love it.
First of all, shifting stick direction is right. You may be used to other direction, but is so more natural to shift down pushing.
About shifting speed, it is unfortunately mostly related to rpms. Try to manually change at the rev limit, and you will get a fast kick you will love.
This told, I can understand the thrill. I also got a problem where bmw want me to put 2000€, while I solved with an 8€ relay.
Please keep this car, it is so beautiful and especially in this colour!
