The living legend, "Sweet Pea" Pernell Whitaker sits down with RB & Jae to reflect on his Olympic career, being robbed against Julio Cesar Chavez, the best defensive fighters, and more. - Sport
Rest in peace Sweatpea. Boxing lost a true icon yesterday.
RIP Sweet Pea, well never forget you!
RIP to Pernell and his Jr. 🙏🏽
Yes! Pernell will always be the GOAT.
Got robbed in the first JL Ramirez fight too......Still pissed off about that to this very day.
@aaron pryor you don't know shit about boxing
@aaron pryor you must be a casual disrespecting Whitaker like that. I respect the real Aaron Pryor the greatest Jr welterweight champion of all time. But you you're an idiot
@aaron pryor Oscar De La Hoya was not a bum. Tito Trinidad wasn't either. Plus, Pernell has been robbed before. His record is still legit. Greenmount Avenue is right. You have no respect
Pernell did have "Matrix" like moves! Definitely a legend!
If lomachenko is in the matrix, Pernell is the architect my guy.
PERNELL was the creator of the MATRIX lol.....
pernell always had a slow way of talking he was the south and the hood. everytime a fighter talks he gets criticized about his speech. what do you expect he was a proffessional fighter. i still love him and appreciate what he did.
There's still a little effect of the brutality of boxing. You don't leave fighting without some damage.
STFU no matter where you from that aint normal. Having said thst it goes with the game. I have nothing bad to say bout Sweat Pea. I just aint gonna lie for the man
I am a big fan of Pernell Whitaker. I have learned that some of the slur speech is because of drug and alcohol abuse.
Strange cause he wasn't hit often I think the few hits Chavez landed scrambled his eggs. Listen to most black fighters after they retire. Mexicans get hit alot more and listen to a recent Chavez interview or Barrera morales Márquez. No signs of trauma
@@DaveConrad3234 do u watch boxing he was rarely touch
DAMN !!! Rest In Peace Sweet Pea (greatest southpaw fighter of all time)
Its debatable. Between pernell, hagler and pacquiao
Pacman, Naseem, Loma, Rigo
Nah pacquiao is he’s not far behind though.
Hagler was the most fierce, Pacquiao hardest puncher and Whitaker was ultimate defensive master. I cant think of any southpaws that would rank with them off top of my head. Maybe Joe Calzaghe?
Rest in Peace to the legend!!!! Pernell Whitaker!
Pernell "Sweet Pete" Whitaker is the true G.O.A.T!!!!!!! Remember watching your fights on HBO like it was yesterday!! Rest in Peace my big brother!!!
🥊💯Rest in Power Pernell, and May your soul be place by our creator into the boxing heavens on judgement day. You were gifted and blessed with the ability too show all boxing fans the true definition of the sweet science. Also OneLove too you Pernell, you will always be missed, but never ever forgotten. Thank You Pernell 🥊💯✊🏿🖤✊🏿
Now I am going around youtube looking at clips of this legend

Classic example of old school conditioning and training; what an example of pure class in this gentleman who studied the sweet science. Unheard of today and one that the game will truly miss! RIP Sweet Pea. You DID BEAT Chavez.
don't forget De lay Hoya...he schooled him too!
Sweet pea . Was great to c him and hear him talk . Its just a shame theres not a lot of interviews of him on utube . A great master . Thanks for all the entertainment and great fights sweet pea . Was a great pleasure to watch .
RIP Sweet Pea ... My favorite fighter of all time...
Mine too
Norfolk is going to miss her son.. R.I.P Pernell... Sweet Science of Boxing never looked better... And if you never watched that fight then please do yourself a favor and see what this reporter was talking about... Chavez first loss was to this man right here...
R.I.P. MY BROTHER POUND FOR POUND LEGEND!!!!
Wasn't a robbery. Chavez bet is ass.
@@thellanosfamiy doubt it only reason why the judges would give it to chavez is cause they didn't like the groin shots or they were just bias asf
.Pernell was a boss in the squared circle!
I can't stop watching his highlights they're the epitome of the sweet science of boxing.
Even folk who don't watch boxing appreciate his poetry in motion.
It was truly a beautiful thing.
r.i. p champ👊
I don't know how Whitaker was so underrated. Now that he's passed away, I'm sure the media will see how legend this guy was in his boxing skills which belong in the top of boxing.
Yup...Always the case, Luis.
Sweet Pea was truly one of the all time greats. He reminds me of Marvelous Marvin Hagler in this sense. Neither got all the accolades the deserved and earned. Both two of the very best of there era but under appreciated by history.
I totally agree...
Rest in Peace Champ!!!
One of the greats. What a great fight he gave with Chavez.
It was a pleasure to watch this man Box Chavez in person RIP Champ!!!
me jtowers yo you where there!! That’s fucking crazy!!!
I grew up watching his fights via mom dukes and her love of boxing...he was straight slinky with it....always...R.I.P #VAsVeryOwn #AllHandsOnDeck🤜👊🤛🙏
He did beat Julio Cesar Chavez. Greetings from mexico
One honest Mexican
Myron Smith one honest black guy.
@BLACK Face don't be so stupid. Whitaker beat Chavez. And I'm Mexican, too. I had Chavez winning 5 rounds. Whitaker took the rest.
People like you don't appreciate the sport. You're just a cheerleader.
@BLACK Face take yo bitch ass to a right wing channel you bitch.. long live sweet pea!👊✊✊
Pernell waited for chavez to slow down as he was there for Taylor fight & saw what could’ve happened to him had he fought chavez at his p
When everyone talks about the all time greats it seems they wanna ignore Pernell Whittaker. He would give any fighter trouble in his prime. The guy was so hard to hit and so much tougher than what people gave him credit for. RIP
Damn right THEE BEST!!! Put some respect home his name👊🏾👊🏾
Terrence Crawford is no comparison to Sweet Pea. Total different fighter. Crawford gets hit too much.
Terrence is no Sweet Pea! Got to be kidding me. 😀
No comparison ever sp was way to good compared to crawford
This is a great interview. Very informed interviewer asking great questions
Pernell Whitaker, one of the best to ever lace up a pair of gloves. RIP
Truly a legend. The slickest fighter of all time. Rest In Peace Pernell we will miss you. 🥊
Rest in peace Sweet-pea. I loved watching you in the ring. I love the name Sweet-pea and if the Lord was to bless me with a son, I would love to middle name my son Sweet-pea. Not just because it has a great sound to it, but in the back of my mind, your brilliant Craftsman ship in the ring always will be with me. God bless you sweet pea!
He was so great at not getting hit, that his speech is the way it is. Because he didn't get hit. imagine if he wasn't so great.
his speech is messed up because of the years and years of drug abuse
John white his speech has always been bad go back and watch his old film, he talked the same back then Lololol.
John white he did a lot of drugs as well. That can definitely kill a few brain cells
@@AK325iZoro He's always talked like that, drugs or no drugs. Not extremely articulate but a great guy with good common sense.
@@ncs2104 he’s literally keepin up the conversation in a good pace..
Nice interview one of my favourites from this entire fight week.
Rest in peace sweet pea we know you won both of those fights against chavez and de lahoya .every true boxing fan and expert knows this for sure .a great olympian and one of the top ten greatest fighters of all time .if i could fight like anyone it would be sweet pea .his defensive technique and counter punching is unmatched .one of the greatest in history .rest in peace sweet pea one love forever .
Respect Whitaker but listen to the Chavez fight without audio the commentary pushed a narrative that Whitaker was way a head when at best he won by two rounds.
Pernell was no joke I enjoyed his fights , my favorite of all time.
This man’s spirit will continue on through me
He'll always be a star in the boxing world & will be missed 💪
This really is an outstanding interview. RIP Pernell, you were a once - in - lifetime fighter.
Pernell is by far the best and still to this day considered the best .
He was my favorite boxer of the 90s.
Good interview. One of The Top 5 Greatest...hands down!
A great loss. May He Rest In Peace
I really loved watching Pernell Whitaker fight.
Hope she interviews Jose Luis Castillo and ask him the same question about when Castillo truly beat mayweather in their first fight
D Lopez didn't happen yell
kevin buggage It was draw. Only punch that Pernell hurt Chavez was with was that testicle punch.
D Lopez They asked Mayweather who were the best fighters that he had fought and he completely ignored Castillo but said the best was a black boxer with over 27 losses.
Castillo admitted Mayweather beat him. Look it up hater.
@kevin buggage
You must not have watched Castillo Vs. Mayweather, 8-4 Castillo, and that's being generous!
I love this interview. More power to you!
Rip champ
That was an exceptional interview. I would like more from the interviewer. Great way to sit with a Legend.

Speaking of robberies, Castillo was robbed against Floyd Mayrunner Jr.

Rest In Paradise Pernell 🙏🏾
Pernell was not only the best defensive fighter ever he was also the best southpaw the game will ever see! And in my opinion never lost a fight in the ring, rest in peace champ!
squizill-- Definitely rest in peace champ but do you truly think that he beat Trinidad?
@@ericsnow2069 He put up a good fight but no way he beat Trinidad. If he was a few years younger I think he would have beaten Trinidad by a comfortable margin. He was better than Tito but not at the time they met in the ring.

R.I.P. sweet pea 😥😥😥😥😥😥
great interview sweet pea is definitely a goat
RIP legend
Can't agree with Pernell on the Chavez fight, though I accept mine is a minority view. I rate Whitaker very highly but he was allowed to get away with a lot of spoiling against Chavez. Benton said he told Meldrick Taylor to hit Chavez on the hips to disrupt his rhythm in their fight in 1990 and for sure his gameplan with Pernell was along similar lines, difference being Whitaker was a brilliant defensive fighter and naturally awkward. He was a nightmare to fight, particularly for a precise well-balanced combination puncher like Chavez. The idea put across by many, including the commentators and most the print media that Whitaker outfought Chavez is laughable. The plan was to irritate, frustrate, foul and keep him from getting set. It worked. And let's be honest here that he is fouling, a lot. I'm not talking about the low blows that Chavez always gets dogged on by the announcers (yes, he does hit low) - though Whitaker lands plenty of them here - but the excessive crouching so his head at times is level with Chavez' waistband, and also the holding and wrestling, sometimes maneuvering himself so he's behind Chavez. It's ridiculous. 50% of Whitaker's game in this fight is was is called "spoiling", when lesser fighters do it. I watched this fight live and it was incredibly disappointing - the fight to determine P4P no.1 did not live up to its billing. And that wasn't just down to the "bad" verdict or Chavez looking far from his usual invincible self, it was Whitaker's tactics. They were effective, no doubt but he shouldn't have been allowed to get away with some of the stuff he was pulling in there. Yes, Chavez cut a frustrated figure and was out of ideas by the middle rounds but he was there to fight, if it was left up to him. Whitaker was the guy who turned the Leonard - Duran of the 90s into a underwhelming spectacle.
Chavez was walking into punches all night long, he got outclassed badly
Chavez won that fight
This one hurt. Crawford is no where close to being in same sentence as Sweet P
I dont agree with you on that, Crawford is a master

Rip the Legend!
Rest in power Sweet Pea! Respect 😢
Classy and humble.Aloha Champ!
Pete was amazing, but he is not the best defensive with under 50 bouts in the 12Rounds era compared to 229 wins of Mr. Pep. He is still very arrogant for not putting Willie Pep’s wizardry accurately ahead of his own [ as Ray Leonard does with saying there is no comparison between him and Ray Robinson ]. That is humility! To recognize and to honour the obvious. People who are disillusioned by Mr. Duva are un-researched. Goerge Benton did the work and was never credited until Evander [Holyfield] and Pernell confesses thereof. More specifically, Archie Moore knocked out a lot of men that were dangerous and some had him beat and or previously beaten him, but many a times he came from the brink of destruction to win. The frequency of bouts, duration, caliber and hunger then we’re monstrous. The irony is, he manages to secure one of the highest KO ratios ever throughout an illustrious career. That requires discipline, brilliance and with a punch, alongside an unappreciated defense. The same for SRR and Henry Armstrong’s career, having amassed so many wins through battle tested resilience are accredited to defense as well. Mr. Whitaker came along with color TV and although did make adversaries miss, his bouts and feats takes away from the black and white reels [ and because it was long ago ], but nonetheless are unequivocally non comparable. By and large, people utterly misconstrue knockout with entirely being offensive.
Boxing Ring Chess what you said was very deep, but remember, this is Pernell”s opinion, and many others as well! Personally, I agree with him! Now I didn’t see a lot of Pep, only highlights when he fought Sandy Sandler! That’s why I say, he is the best defensive fighter that I’ve seen!
Best defensive fighter ever..and one of the best offensive fighter s aswell great speed and accuracy..great body puncher ect
