    I think this is THE best version of H&G I have ever heard. Not only is the music flawless but the emotion and audience participation is palpable, and it's gorgeously filmed! I get chills watching/listening. Can I assume it's the UK equivalent of Stars and Stripes forever, for your cousins across the pond? We like (love) to call ourselves "patriotics" here, but I guarantee that 90% of those who say it couldn't tell you the history and meaning of our most popular "patriotic" songs they cheer and flag - wave every July 4th 😢 Very sad, we don't know our own history... what's worse, younger Americans can't even find the USA on a MAP. In 2021, 75m adults define being a patriot as violently invading the seat of gov't in a blind devotion to an autocratic con-man who knows even less about our country's history than they do. 😞

    • @L._Titus
      @L._Titus Před rokem

      Well said! As a fellow American, I agree that a lot of the people who call themselves “patriotic” or “conservative” don’t actually know much about real American history or traditions, just what talking heads on TV tell them America is about. There are some young people who try to educate ourselves about history though (I’m 22).

  • @muttleycrew
    @muttleycrew Před 2 lety +7

    My mother, an English expat living in Australia used to say patriotism was actually dangerous and a thing only fools would ever buy into. Couldn't help but notice that she'd burst into tears every single time this played at the Proms. Strange power that music has, it can build up inside and assiduously overwhelm us.

    When I hear this march, I think of the legendary Slovak soprano Patricia Janeckova, who passed away in October of last year after a heroic battle with cancer. I pray that all future performances of "Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1" by the BBC will be dedicated to Maestra Janeckova's memory. Patricia lived in the Czech Republic, and there should be a great many Czech and Slovak flags flying in the Albert Hall.

    ETERNAL ENGLAND
    My heart is in the hills of home,
    And in the winds of March,
    It sings within Tintagel’s foam
    And Gloucester’s soaring arch.
    It floats amid the rain-wet trees
    And golden fields of corn,
    O’er silent heights and marshy leas
    By fog-bound shores forlorn.
    It races o’er the sun-swept Fells,
    And walks the secret lanes,
    It runs upon the open Downs
    Where Saxons fought with Danes.
    It laughs along the pebbled brooks
    By ancient timber’d inns,
    It dances with the wind-blown rooks
    And daffodils of spring.
    It lives within the knotted oak
    And burrows with the mole,
    To ‘list the mystic charms and spells
    Of England’s wond’rous soul:
    ‘Tis lore that only her children know;
    The Chosen Ones so fair,
    And they alone can understand
    Her invocations rare.
    But while these live we, too, shall live
    In high, immortal skies;
    For if her songs such life can give
    Can England ever die?

    영국인들에게는 놀라울정도로 소중한 엘가의 유산일것이다. 이토록 아름답고 웅장한 그들의 음악이 있기에 그들의 자부심 또한 엄청나리라 예상한다.
