I'm not even British but I love watching this - the history, the culture, the music, everyone coming together and they know what to do, when to do it, and why. It's what makes everyone feel a part of the same thing, it's what makes a country.

Beautiful song worth being an anthem of its own. Portugal won't forget that during all these many centuries of history, full of ups and downs, England was the only nation that always stood by our side in every war against the invaders from the East and we retributed by sending our men to fight by your side in the WW1 even having no stake on that conflict. The Portuguese patriots will always salute you.

England has had an alliance with Portugal since 1386, the longest standing alliance ever, even before the Uk became the Uk. If you send us wine, we'll send you Morris Dancers...... ummm, we'll try to justify that later. And yes, England needs its own anthem, be it this or Jerusalem, to distiguish itself from the rest of the UK.

Bob Foy As you may already know, the original line was "while you've a Lucifer to light your fag, smile boys, that's the style." But of course, in this politically correct day & age, you can't use the word "fag" anymore, even when it's being used as a slang term for a cigarette (as it is in this musical context) and NOT as a homophobic epithet.

However, for me there is one glaring and very sad omission from all the favourable comments posted in that time. We may look stupid. These songs as I remember as a small child at parties. Always played at the end of the night before we go. It does calm everyone down and bid farewell. All get together for once last moment for our Queen and country. It is very long old tradition. Bobbing (moving) up and down is very old ways to move with the music. I am in my 30's and this my parent's thing to do. Yes, it's actually lovely and funny and make each other laugh. You have to join hands even the children. It's a chance silly father's get to pull their kids about. Everyone has to hold hands. And it makes a good line of waves. Just like the Mexican wave. It's a wind down time. Then bye bye afterwards.
