      @@Lightning-Shock Oh are navigation, data plans, blue-tooth connectivity or Voice recognition not popular features there? Because all of those services typically require some type of internet access and can be used to transmit data.

    • @Lightning-Shock
      @Lightning-Shock Před 5 lety +2

      @@BigHeadClan you don't need internet for Bluetooth connectivity and navigation, which are features that I have. Voice recognition is done by features like Android auto, which is a phone's internet. Anyway, to be honest, I myself haven't had many occasions to jump into an upper class car like a BMW or Mercedes.

    • @BigHeadClan
      @BigHeadClan Před 5 lety +1

      @@sacksis You are correct that those are independent features but Modern infotainment systems they also include integrated services like live traffic updates, music streaming, weather etc. And that tie into those applications and provide real-time updates.
      True things like Maps or voice recognition can be a one-time download but it's also a fact that nearly all modern cars with navigation either have it's own LTE connection or at the very least can be tethered to a phone via blue-tooth... And thus is capable of transmitting data and connecting to the internet.
      I admittedly wasn't very clear in my previous post but if you think for a second car manufactures aren't capable or willing to collect people's information
      when they already do so with our TV's and cell-phones your hopelessly naive.

    Cell phones record SO much data most people wouldn't believe it. It knows where you are, can use the mic and cameras without you knowing, and even in airplane mode, knows where you are. It just doesn't send data until you're out of airplane mode. In fact, most of the time, the phone is so accurate, it knows if you're on the first or second, or 13th floor of a building. You are tracked by which wifi your phone attempts to connect to, and uses all of the data collected to target ads at you. My truck sending data about me, not unbelievable and I really don't much care. But, if you're planning on committing a crime, don't take a new vehicle. All that data can be collected.

On the other hand if say your movement can be used by police as one more peice of evidence that you commited a murder or ribbed a bank then go for it. Like, imagine if your car sends info to your insurance company that you are speeding, raising your particular insurance rates. At the current moment things aren't that bad, but the moment data tracking becomes used as a means to supervise individuals' unique behaviors this all could become quite problematic.

      maybe not Sat Comm, but you do have an ECU. Think of it as a flight data recorder - for cars. It is recording all sensor outputs + turn signals, lights, braking, speed, rpm... everything - for the last 60 seconds real time.
      When you run that stoplight & wipe out a family, cops & attorneys will get that data to prove your guilt (or innocence).
      Anything since 1994 (OBDII), and a few from before are doing this.

    Great video, I knew all this already. Also never use the driving tracking stuff insurance companies try to get you to use, to save you money. They are using it to find ways to raise your rates even if you do not have accidents or tickets. Got to love OnStar, charge you monthly for a service and then sell your data to double dip and make money from you. Keep your car dumb and fun.

    Also, You should check your phones permissions and system permissions every time they roll out a "security" update, they tend to reset the ones you changed or hide them under different processes.

      @Dave Micolichek While I don't fully agree with those either, I at least understand what it's in there for. If I cause a massive accident that kills multiple people, that could provide valuable information into what happened, much like a plane's black box. Sometimes it's the only source of the truth in what happened. I don't do anything dumb though so I don't really worry about that since it's not actually sending off any information, and is only really "active" in the event of a crash. What I don't agree with at all though, in any capacity, is my car sending off information at all times that is absolutely not important to anyone except me. My shopping habits, food choices, where I drive to on the weekends, no one needs any of that for any reason.

    • @AnonymousZaoGaming
      @AnonymousZaoGaming Před 5 lety +1

      @Dave Micolichek Exactly. Pretty soon people will be getting nice little pop-up ads on infotainment centers for KFC or McDonald's while using the GPS app and missing an exit. I'm sure that won't lead to any more accidents or anything.

    • @bajaboy27
      @bajaboy27 Před 5 lety

      @Dave Micolichek true, but thats no necessarily stealing personal data, thats more like recording the way a car has been driven, along with the ecu which also records throttle positions and recent speeds and the such, but its not spying on you.

    • @bajaboy27
      @bajaboy27 Před 5 lety

      @Dave Micolichek it is not quite spying, at least not by definition, its recording, storing driving habits, or and recent high speeds and fuel demand along with throttle positions. The reason why its not "spying" is that we know this things are happening constantly, since the introduction of ECUs and various sensors that's been known, but in no way its listening to your conversations, or weighing you, or knowing what you listen to in the radio, not even knowing your climate control preferences, and using this data to target you in some other way in order to profit and all that being done behind your back, thats spying.. sure ECUs info has been used in courts, but there has been cases that were won due to that information, so that could both be beneficial and incriminating.. spying its only beneficial one way.

    Do a video on how the "Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) cash for clunkers) program negatively affected the auto industry depending on those old cars. 1. Secondary auto parts industry especially shops that refurbashed parts. So many cars were traded in so fast that alternators, engine blocks, heads and such ended up getting crushed instead of saved. Those same parts suppliers lost a lot of there customer base that got new cars instead of continuing to fix there old one. 2. Auto repair business that lived off older cars that did not have the training and equiptment to fix new cars lost potential customers with fewer old cars to fix and no money to upgrade equiptment and train mechanics. 3. Drastically increased the price of older cars for collectors even the common cars or ones that were not collected cars before making say a odd ones like 76 Z28 or even 86 IROC out of reach for the tinkering fast food worker and only available to the wealthy.

    We only got recently a system in our new cars here in the EU that does emergency calls in case of a crash. It is mandated by law to be on for new cars sold after a certain year. However due to cost tied to it (consumers don’t pay for the service) most manufacturers only include the mandatory functions to meet requirements and they aren’t getting the data but the government branches that operate the system. Only a few manufacturers do include further functions where they actually get data as it is send to a different (their) server. I have such a car. I‘ve read the manual, it doesn’t state that the car is able and the licensed seller (brands sell the right to sell their brand to companies and those companies aren’t allowed to sell other brands in the same building, even if related like VW and Audi) didn’t know either about it.
    I had used a VPN to download the App of the manufacturer to access the data and showed it to them. Only then did they believe me and we went to sit in my car with the chef mechanic and the owner of the dealership, going through a laptop linked to my car. It took us 15minutes to actually find the enhanced abilities of the system and another 15min to activate them.
    The system is by default deactivated (the not mandatory parts that share data with the manufacturer) and I had to read some pages (which I did) before being asked if I agree. It was listed in detail what they collect, where it is stored and for how long and even who within the manufacturer has access (quite limited) due to our strict data privacy laws. I had to leave a digital signature which was send to the manufacturer and is stored in the cars computing unit before the laptop received an encryption key to activate the system. As we noticed, it can’t be activated remotely and the activation request takes over 24hrs (I assume they are checked by a human).
    After that, I went with the owner into his office and he did call the manufacturers head office (responsible for 3 European countries) why no one was told about the cars functions and the person on the phone was also not aware that the car can do it. Now, 8 months later has a mention of the system appeared on the website (for 3 countries) and that people can ask their dealership to activate it.
    I guess if US citizens rally for better data protection, they could also get great service without being unknowingly tracked.
