I flew to Korea from the U.S. to watch this concert. The whole concert was absolutely breathtaking. Like others have said she suffers from Patulous Eustachian tube dysfunction and I can tell you it was SO so hot that day. So considering those conditions and the pain she was enduring at this moment I can’t believe she sang as well as she did. True professional.
Wow, that trip should have been an amazing adventure, no denying it I envy you! I understand this performance was near the end of a long concert, like she always does, so that wears even more on her.
It was rare to see her tested like this in this day and age, where superstars are often manufactured and risk-averse. To see her killing it is a huge triumph of the human spirit and shows her true grit. It was a huge milestone to understand why she survived this grueling industry and is the rare soloist who is at the TOP of almost everything.

Speaking to IU's breathiness for a moment... It's a deliberate choice she's making. Even if it's technically inefficient, it's an artistic quality she wants to bring to the song, so she accepts the inefficiency; it's not threatening anything because she's able to control it throughout.

English-speaking reactions have no choice but to emphasize the technique and skills of how something is delivered, but to truly understand what makes IU a brilliant artist has everything to do with the context of what she creates, when, what, and why, and of course HOW. It is the choices she makes, that make her work organic and developing rather than overly produced based on some company concepts on what trends and sells. Love the fact, that she rarely repeats herself even during live performances is a credit to her enduring legacy.

The high note body tension you described towards the end before the long pause is more than what meets the eye. IU actually extended the note by half a bar (2 beats) in crescending volume with a bigger reverb closing compared to the original recording. It wasn't she fighting to hit a high note or showing off being a Diva, but a point was purposely made about defiance against this particular challenge, the moment, and perhaps marking this historical occasion being the first Korean female soloist performed sold out concert at the Olympic stadium for 2 days. The self written lyrics are at the key verse
'Even if I am swept away getting lost at sea, I am free.
Never again shall I be entrapped by darkness blindingly wash over me.
Never shall I pretend I don't know myself anymore.'
She is cheering herself on, saying I can do it, I'll fight, I know I am worth it, I accept it. IU has been suffering from something called Patulous Eustachian Tube Dysfunction for the past years which causes her pain and massive discomfort when singing out loud especially those high notes. It was a huge problem for her during this concert, probably due to over-rehearsing, hot weather, dehydration etc. where she couldn't hear the music half the time therefore she kept removing and swapping her earpieces trying to figure things out. IU and her entire team really worked together brilliantly to ensure everything went right in spite of it.

This was actually the last song of her offical concert which was 2 1/2 hours followed by a 1 hour encore (which was shorter than normal for her because Seoul as a curfew on outside noise levels past 10:30pm. The concert started at 7pm..
I think you are at a severe disadvantage when you are talking about some things, when you don't know what the song is about. This struck me when you made a comment about one part of the song where you thought she could have gone up into her higher range you think is her strongest (at least that is what I understood you to say), however it would have been totally inappropriate in the context of the songs lyrics.
To that point, the song is about her struggles growing up and learning to about who she is. One of the lines is " did I have to hurt that child, just to become me."
The lyrics are:

Fyi, She has Patulous Eustachian Tube Dysfunction in her left ear. On the 1st day of the concert(the live clip is the 1st day) the weather heat triggered it since it was outdoor stadium so she struggled throughout the end of the 1st day and the whole 2nd day.
As you continue your journey with IU's music, you'll know her techniques and skills. She's pretty extraordinary when performing live.
The more I watch vocal reactions to IU, the more I understand that her appeal comes from so many other things aside from her vocal (this is coming from a huge IU fan). It's her whole stage demeanor and the building blocks of her lyrics and artistry throughout the years. Thank you for the reaction!!
I know you don't comment on content, but this song is a coming of age triumphant piece intended to be performed with this grandiose stage and it represents a lot for her. she wrote the lyrics and you can bet she was involved in every decision of the production and arrangement. So "intention" in this case starts at the genesis of it. Life is not in the business of pomeling persons with a deliberate purpose but, every once in a while you have a brave soul in the receiving end of economic, mental and emotional irreparable hardship and it's really rare to stand up to all of it to become such an icon. In the story behind the song she admits being afraid and ashamed and also not loving herself as she should have had, but she also declares with satisfaction and even pride that now, she has come around full circle and she may lose again against life and find herself in the wrong path but, this time she knows how to find the road home and she's not afraid anymore.
For singer it's important to know their voice and actually use that for the way they want. IU is super professional artist. Beside singing she writes her own song. And actually both made her a storyteller which made people like me to listen to her beautiful voice and her beautiful story ^^ ❤
My personal interpretation when you've mentioned the variance of the way she sang each section is her way of telling a story thru this song.
IIRC, this song is her own life story. Fun fact, the studio version of this song is 5:16 long which reflects her birthday, May 16th.

I sense you wanting to really hear her upper register & understand you’re not too into the breathiness singing. Knowing that, there are many other song selections that showcase that fully.

These are more upbeat songs & she’s not in any pain or discomfort. For ballad songs, I recommend watching it with lyrics, since that’s her speciality. She’s practically a poet. (iuenglishlyrics is an awesome page to rewatch My Sea w/ subtitles, as well as her other performances).
IU had been suffering from ear disease since a year before the concert date.
She confessed that she felt like hell on the day of the concert.
She had a lot of trouble singing because of her ear disease. But she went to a lot of trouble not to show it.
for me this whole performance is just beautiful in and of itself, period. but taking into account that a) this was during the (first) encore at the end of an hours long concert, b) the concert was outdoors and it was SUPER hot and humid that day (you can see her sweating during a lot of the performances, i remember at one point she said thank you to the wind 😅) and c) the heat/humidity worsened her ear condition, and she herself said on the 2nd day that she felt like she was in hell… that just makes it even more impressive. iu is truly one of a kind.
I think when it comes to IU, delivering the message of the song is the most important so how she sings the song will match that.
There are indeed many factors regarding this performance as this is the encore song around 2:45 hours and the heat and sweat triggered her ear condition but nonetheless it's still a great performance.
Even if you don't react to it online, I recommend you check out the lyrics to her songs, she's really a great lyricist.

This song is actually very personal to her since it talks about her struggles during her debut and how she learned to love herself and shift her image towards something that she wants to show to the people. It is very emotional, and her voice is just phenomenal.
IU early in her career wanted to develope a voice or technique to stand out from others. Thus her style of breathy singing in the later part of her career.
When IU sings, shes not just singing.. shes telling a story. And make you feel as if shes telling it personally to you... Pulling on your heartstrings... Just ❤❤❤
she sang this song on a 3 and a half hour conzert and this was prob 3/4 into the concert and part of the first encore
one of iu’s closest producer friend said that one of the best things about iu is she hears everything and she knows why something sounds good- so you’re correct when you mentioned that her phrasing and the way she sings verses is intentional. it’s just a bit sad that she’s experiencing hearing problems nowadays (even during that concert) bcos of an existing condition 😢
I don't think I've ever made it to the end of this song without shedding a tear or two. It's just beautiful, especially if you know the meaning of the song.
Sadly, during this concert IU was hurting a lot, there are some times when you can see even her smile is strained. Other fans would know more details, but she has a very painful ear condition around this time that makes her singing really difficult, it was reported that even some staff felt emotional watching IU power through it once.
I remember everyone was worried and proud that she was able to hit her power note in My Sea, because I'm sure that must have been painful.

EVERYTHING ABOUT IU's MUSIC is intentional. Her performances are based on the feelings on how she wrote her songs. The Lyrics are big part of it and the way she owns every stage is incredible. IU's concerts are one of the best in the world.
yeah, she is a very hardworking person who don't like to leave things to chances and luck as she never has confident with her luck since her poor childhood.
So she always practice to perfect and try every notes in every possible way she could hit before she finalised the song and train all these notes into her vocal muscles to be prepared for all kind of Murphy's law would happen.

And during that concert iu suffered from an ear problem called PATOLOUS EUSTACIAN TUBE DISFUNCTION . And her in ear monitor is not functioning well.
I quite recommend IU'S "Secret". It is one of IU's strong vocal songs in my opinion. It's from her early albums, but still quite a good song.

She actually sang this at the end of her concert and she did it while suffering from an ear condition as mentioned in the other comments. That high note was also a little bit longer than the one in the original version. But despite what she's been going through and the hot weather, she still did so well. This performance was really so emotional because the song tells about her story and this was also the first time she sang it live and it's at the biggest concert venue in Korea. Her concert was held for 2 days and even though her ear condition got worse after the first day she still performed this song for both days. I think IU is really so amazing.

Technical singing will probably kills off the emotional side of singing, what connects with the audience is the human/emotional side even with its imperfections. This song as many commented is about her life, how she hated herself in her early 20's and finally accepting herself and she showed it through her singing. No one can sing a song as it should be sung that can connects with the listeners.

But i do hope you try to have the translation in order to relate to the interpretation of the song esp on your comment on the 2nd verse. I think it is not delivered that way, but was done more uniquely in my opinion because it is connected to the lyrics and story telling.
I just feel focusing too much on vocals might be sacrificing some other elements during the reaction.
I love that you noticed her artisty and intentional singing and phrasing. It would have been magical with the lyrics. Coz for me, IU is meticulous and delivers with a lot of elements happening at same time, but stays loyal to the song..that's why I think when she's singing, people prefers to volume up and listen intently.

This was Jieun's very first live full song performance of My Sea since it was released 🙂😌🤍
The 22nd song (last song in the actual concert, in the encore, but she sang 4 more songs in the second encore, after) (yes, she has second encores, 😄❤️) that night and she actually had 0 sleep the night before.. but Jieun never lets anything get in the way, she always gives her all in every song.. she has very high standards in the way she performs each song.. she's very meticulous and notices every detail.. the amazing, the good, the things that can improve and the things that wasn't satisfactory for her. She takes everything into consideration and works hard on every bit of it that's why and how she just endlessly becomes even better and masterful in what she does..
Discovering Jieun and her music was a true blessing for me and the more you know about her and the things she does, and how she does them, I'm sure you'll understand why.. 💝

I got dragged to watch her concert in 2019, not knowing who she was. I was an instant convert by the third song. She is hands down the most amazing singer I have seen and heard. Then I realised when I got home, I actually bought her debut album 11 years ago because I loved her voice. Of course, I am a official fan thereafter.

One think interesting to me was her final walk, which follows what looks like a small wave coming to shore. Waves do not get faster or slower. If more wind is added, the waves get bigger, but they still come in at about the same speed. The small wave of light that she follows down the stage looks like it might be a bit fast, but I could be wrong -- close enough. . . .
