LIAM vs KEITH RICHARDS - The Story Behind The 'Street Fighting Man' Oasis B-Side
Vložit
- čas přidán 30. 01. 2021
- In August '97, Be Here Now was released. In October 1997, Liam and Noel Gallagher went on BBC Radio One live and threatened four of the greatest British rock icons of 1960's to a fight on Primrose Hill.
This is the history of that headline-inspiring outburst, and how Oasis fought back against their musical heroes. It is also the story of a long lost Oasis documentary, made at the height of their fame in the Be Here Now era, which was shut down and banned, and has never been seen since.
EDIT - Big thanks to JF Maille who has provided a TON of the lost information on this documentary! The documentary was called "Oasis Behind The Mirror." The production company was Canal Plus, and the director was Nick Kent.
It was broadcast in France (see this link - www.liberation...)
Further big thanks to James Royle, who located the documentary online! Here is the link... www.bilibili.c...
Many images and videos in my CZcams content have been found online without any attribution or credit available. In many cases I have therefore not been able to add a credit in the videos themselves due to lack of information. If your image or video has been used and a credit is required, please email me with your details and evidence of authorship and a credit will be added into the video description.
Many thanks, JH.
Ladies and gents, the lost documentary has been found! It is called 'Oasis Behind The Mirror,' produced by Nick Kent of Canal Plus.
Thanks to Jf Maille and James Royle for the info, and a link to the long lost video! Some of the narration is in French (and Jagger is dubbed!)
No idea if the website is 110% safe, so make sure your virus blocker is on etc - just common sense. I was able to watch it no problems, but just be sensible etc.
Cheers! JH

EDIT - Also, in response to several comments, I know BHN was released in August 97. When I say 'In October' I am talking about when they got together to watch the documentary, not when the album was released.
Great find..The magic of the internet..
btw you might find that Jagger's speaking in French ;)
So that’s why it was never on in the UK. It’s in bloody French! Great find, thanks for sharing!
What a find! That bit at 34:09 where Liam talks about fucking an alien up the bottom. Brilliant stuff!
oh my God - thank you. i have always wondered about this Documentary, genuinely escited to see it. and by the way, your videos are very good! keep up the good work.
@@SeanJepson7 Absolutely, Mick is not dubbed at all, he speaks French. Saying that you can't dance to Oasis, that it's more melodic that something you can dance to, that he has the new album and listened to it once and he "can't" (obviously didn't like it).
That's kinda heartbreaking to receive comments like that from your heroes.
Yeah it must have sucked
Maybe, but after calling Michael Hutchence a has-been it’s hard for me to feel sorry for them.
They were SO cocky and intentionally controversial back then they probably relished in the drama of it all. And as you said James, Oasis had the last laugh. Nearly 30-yrs on and there’s millions of us who can hum, whistle and sing dozens of their songs. And Liam especially is gaining the young kids as fans now too!
@@danrl9710 'Oasis having the last laugh'? That IS funny! They are not even in the same stratosphere as The Beatles & The Stones!
Liam Who?!
@@petermills542 I didn’t say they were, but there would be an argument. What everyone on this thread needs to realize is that all of it is subjective. You could compare sales from an objective standpoint, but even that’s pointless given the difference in eras. The last laugh comment is based on how Oasis has endured nearly 3-decades and I predict them being similarly relevant in decades to come. The songs and swagger penetrated an entire generation and that’s all that matters. As for the Beatles, you’ll never hear me criticizing or downplaying that miracle. Nowhere near as interested in the Stones, but again, it’s all subjective...
Flashbax is a great song!!
Oasis wrote the best rock anthems..hands down..they made rock anthems cool
I’d imagine Mick J would of been watching Oasis’ rise and the total mania in the U.K. for them. He probably felt reminded of early Rolling Stones 60’s Brian era where they had the same buzz & chaos around them breaking through. Probably felt a little jealous reminiscing of that feeling of everything being new & exciting. Knowing that the first 2 Oasis albums were flawless & everyone calling them the new Beatles it was time to bring them down a peg with a fair comment on album #3...it’s true, you can’t dance to it.
And as others have said on here already Keith doesn’t like any music post ‘69
Yeah, fair play
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar thanks for the link to the Mirror doc, just watched it. You’d of thought Marcus Russell would of just cut out those clips of George, Keith & Mick rather than pulling the plug entirely. Didn’t see McCartney in it
Great video , just watched the documentary, good to see footage that I’ve not seen before and I don’t think I’ve ever heard guiggsy talk so much in interviews,
I think people got it wrong at the time about be here now , I think the album sounds amazing now.
That bloke also got it wrong about not having any “strawberry fields” type songs, all these years later and oasis songs mean more to be now than ever . Remind me of how great the 90’s were .
And seeing Liam play these songs live makes it even better .
Yeah I think Be Here Now gets a massively unfair reputation. It's a good album
This single was/is bloody fantastic! I love the b-sides.
Suddenly the lyrics to the fame make sense. That song will always be one of my favourites. I know people don’t like be here now and say it’s the worst album but I love it. It’s the best album. Yeah it’s noisy it’s long and every time Liam stops singing there is a guitar solo but to me it’s my favourite. No it hasn’t got the best songs on it but the sound of the album is what I love. Noel remastered D’ya know what I mean for the anniversary cd and to me I sounded ok but he sucked the life out of it. I think it’s time this album and b sides get the credit they deserve
I hate the way Noel trashes this album, like every single Oasis album that came after wasn't shite by comparison.
First off as a long time stones fan they do a fantastic cover of the tune. I think you hit it when you suggested the 4 who were critical are seeing themselves being replaced at the top and are finding it hard to deal with it. Objectively tho they have not done much since the '80's really. Ego prevented them from seeing that Oasis was "standing on the shoulders of giants" something the band readily acknowledged. Actually Oasis continues their legacy something they should be grateful for. But when you been at the top for so long I guess that just ain't gonna happen, But in a certain way the song rings true. In a metaphorical sense Jagger sang he would "kill the king" and now (or then) Liam sings it. So yes Jagger/Richard (et al) you see the king is dead. Probably best to get used to that fact.
Interesting story by the way James. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Where are they now?
It could be much simpler - those 4 guys didn't rate Oasis because they're not that good. One of them, I think George, said, "they lack depth". I think that is spot on. I don't mind Oasis, but as a Stones fan, you should know they are lacking. I don't think any of those 4 guys were worried about being usurped.
It's funny that noel is roughly the same age now as mick and keith were then 1998, but nobody nowadays calls noel the rinkly rocker, maybe because there's no young bands with a lot of talent and a bit of attitude bursting on the seen these days ,no wonder when all they want to do is go on📺 the voice, the x factor, and watch the love Island🏝️, then talk about getting there eyebrows plucked
Rock n roll is dead unfortunately, fook being a kid these days
It's not dead - it's retired
@@ChainNonSmoker, That's Right On Man!!
Good stuff man. Knew about Harrison having beef but never knew that this doc prompted them to say what they did in this interview.
Bit late getting to you on this, but the documentary was made by Nick Kent for Canal +.
Not surprised about Keef, he's pretty well known for not liking other bands, especially when they're bigger than the stones as Oasis were at their peak. McCartney is more surprising as he Noel and Paul Weller worked together on the War Child project in 95. George was kind of right, Liam can be a pain, ask Noel.
Aye old Keef's a bitter man.
oasis were bigger than the stones at their peak?
@@iiburrows Ha. I should have said arguably. I mean in that brief spell in the mid 90s rather than total legacy.
@@iiburrows That might be true pal. Because The Beatles owned the show in the 60's, and everyone else including The Stones followed.
I'd always thought Keith was somewhat jealous of Led Zeppelin because they eclipsed the Stones (arguably) in the 70's.
Google oasis behind the mirror and scroll down the videos, it's hosted on some japanese website, I tried to post a link but youtube wasn't having any of it.
Cheers James I found it, thanks for that, will put a link in the pinned comment thread
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar thankyou mate, I'd never heard of it until your video, much appreciated.
Hey, I’ve recently watched your champagne supernova 27 tracks video, which is very very good. I had an idea that the birdsong bit is birds but sped up in the mix. Noel sat on top of a wall to record some bits and it captured the atmosphere around rockfield, so maybe it’s that but sped up? I got this from the return to rockfield mini documentary
Yeah it could be... still lots of ideas out there!
Oasis were on the famous steve lamacq radio 1 show on 1997 when they were promoting their be here now album. And they were drunk. And liam even walked out when noel insulted him on air . The interview is on CZcams.
Thank you soooooo much!!!!!!!! God bless you and your family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great job!! Well, considering they're now all good friends - except, unfortunately, with Harrison - there's no reason to hide that doc, so maybe we will see it again one day, as historic material at least, such as with any controversy between the four Beatles throughout the years, for instance.
I agree. We have the name of it now - Oasis Behind The Mirror, as well as the company and director. The UK wide purge however is still ongoing, and every time it gets uploaded, it gets removed shortly afterwards
The documentary has been located, its in the pinned comment at the top

Street Fighting Man which I thought Was Raw Rock n Roll. But overly produced ie guitar & vocals etc!!

Stormed down to radio one full of the marching powder!! 😂😂
It must have hurt so much hearing Paul and George talk bad about them considering how much they admired the Beatles.
@코카콜벳cccb01닷com yes, I agree.
Paul said he liked Oasis in an interview in 97. He said they play good and sing good.
It was a Canal Plus documentary with bits and bobs of the BBC Right Here Right Now item. Done by Nick Kent if I am not mistaken.
ok cool... first clues are in!

It's a fantastic cover, MUCH bigger sounding than the original Stones version and Liams vocal is just remarkable on it.
Even a Stones fan would admit its a banger.
The Stones were only great with Mick Taylor
Check out the live version of ‘Street Fighting Man’ live in 1972 Texas. Brilliant piece of Rock’n’roll.
FYI - The Stones rocked way harder in their prime than anything Oasis ever side ;)
@@vincenzostr4488 Brian Jones was great too.

Cheers Joe, more on the way
Oasis just covered a class tune by one of their idols. That’s it. No rivalry, no Liam v Richard’s
It’s a great tune and oasis did a great job. I’d have much sooner seen them end the gigs with this live than my generation
Great video! I'm a huge Oasis fan, but some of the comments were actually fairly accurate - derivative, not deep, & Be Here Now disappointing - so what
They changed my life in 1996 when I saw them live....and here I am 25 years later (granted I didn’t listen to them after 2000, but they still have a place in my heart) ....and I agree too. But, they rocked hard. They partied hard and they fought hard. They were everything that’s great about rock n roll. I love Nirvana and there wasn’t a band in them states that could touch them in regaurds to the essence of Rock n Roll. Not one.
These sit-down type videos are class mate
Thanks!
Fueron criticados duramente por 4 de sus héroes :,( que duro debio ser en cierta forma para Liam y Noel
Great bit of history. Brings back memories. It makes me wonder why this story wasn't included in the Supersonic documentary.
It finished on knebworth I’d love to see a follow up from 98-00 and the new age of them
There are various videos on CZcams of news reports with the audio only from each of these people saying their bits. I seem to remember one news channel playing Harrisons bit with text stating it was from MTV News at the time. I wonder if the doc makers just sourced these comments to edit in their doc?
oasis-1997-11-05 - Dierrere Le Miroir (behind the mirror) 1997 documentary

Fame has a depth -for the longest time I took for granted it was a cover. Very very underrated I feel
Great vid, but still thee best thing about it is the clip of Noel -- the man steals the show with a laugh. Legend.
hahahaha yeah it's funny seeing his reaction
It's a really fantastic cover but my god I would have loved to of experienced the 90's!
I always assumed that Liam and Noel were okay with Paul and Mick as they both had been photo'd with them and met them in 1995 and 1996 respectively. We need people like the Gallagher's to come along nowadays and just say how exactly how they feel all the time haha
We really do
Great video as per the standard..best channel out there
Thanks so much 👍👍👍👍🎸🎸🎸🎸
Thank you for all the in depth story's beinde those songs!
Oasis should not be mentioned in the same sentence as. The Stones.
Oasis was last rocknroll band . Rocknroll means raw, rock guitar sound and melodies. Keith maybe exaggerated a little bit
If I compare Be Here Now with Bridges to Babylon from the Stones both from 1997. Oasis win hands down
@@vincenzostr4488 fair enough, but by the time Oasis released ‘Be Here Now’ they had only released 2 albums. Whereas as The Stones on the other hand had released nearly 30 freaking albums and by that point we’re beyond their prime to begin with. Both albums are shite yes, but Oasis burnt out in 2 years where as the stones consistently had 8 years of great music before they even reached their peak. Even after their peak they still had great music.
I rember the radio interview.
Have you shared this with the oasis subreddit? They might be able to help

Really interesting m8, I never knew any of this 👍
James that story isn't true. Noel was booked for the radio 1 interview and was in his local pub beforehand drinking all day & Liam appeared and asked him where he was going, and when he said he was doing an interview, Liam said he'd go with him.
Steve Lamacq confirmed it in a documentary but I can't remember which one. I recorded the interview as it was broadcast on the night and still have it.
Hmm I do vaguely remember that doc. I do remember Right Here Right Now, but can't remember the name of it.

Woooow,,!!!!!! That's amazing story!!!!
Oasis cover is much better than the original. Liam has fabulous vocals and Noel plays beautiful guitar lines
James please could you have a luck at Bruce Springsteen lucky town on mtv, it’s blagging my head what tuning he’s in and chords he’s playing, plus it’s great song
Be Here Now was released in August, not October.
yes, but they watched the documentary and went to Radio One in October
Well considering Paul met Noel for the war child album in 1995 and recalls having a good time and is friendly with both Gallagher these days I find it hard to believe he said that but i haven’t seen any proof so I could be wrong
Either way I think they all get on now Paul hangs when he sees either Gallagher brother Liam went on tour with the stones and noels mates with micks daughter the only one is George but he died so who knows what would of been
Keith definitely didnt like them. All Mick said was he didnt like be here now (neither did Noel), Paul wasn't a massive oasis fan, but I dont think he ever massively criticized them either, George was an Oasis fan, but he wasn't a Liam fan
I remember reading somewhere that when Flaming Pie was released in 97, Paul sent the CD to the Gallagher brothers with a nice letter saying “I hope you enjoy the album” Liam replied that “Flaming Pie is a waste of time”. So, no wonder Paul was hurt and diss them after that.
Id like to see this documentary

I love the stonesy stuff oasis did - It's Getting Better Man, for example, is brilliant.
The only reason any of those people critiqued them is because they know the truth - noel has serious talent. You don't criticise people below you but people on or above you that you feel threatened by. Stones only had two good albums the rest were shite. For McCartney and Harrison to say what they said in light of songs like Live Forever is just a joke. Bellends the lair of then
Hahahahahaha yeah I think there was a bit of jealousy at play definitely
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar can you do a video on the modes and what modes Noel uses or explain that?
Beggars Banquet Let It Bleed Sticky Fingers Exile all of those are classics and even Satanic Majesties is a favourite of Noel's 😎

100% Pure jealousy .. Some people just don't like being pushed of the top .. But they love all the attention they got over the years but don't like seeing anyone else getting it ... That realy let's the see wot kind of people they realy are underneath .. Let other people have their day too .. And the two brothers are still in music making music working with other artists so they weren't just their to make the numbers up .. They are just as serious about music as the ones who slated them.

This is literally Oasis lost media right here.
It's literally not
@@unknownkingdom I think I was talking about the documentary he mentions
I’ll be honest, I personally don’t like the cover oasis did. I just feel the song is a lot more raw on the original and the production is just too loud and it doesn’t sound good to me. I’ve heard people say it’s more rock and roll but the stones version is in another league because of the distorted acoustic guitars, jaggers vocals being better and more powerful and the sitar textures at the end make it more rock and roll to me.
My generations an alright cover though even if daltreys vocals are a lot stronger, liam does do a great job with it.
End of the day, if Keith Richards says you're crap, you're crap.
Well no lmao
I always had to explain that to my fellow Americans. They're a big band here, big enough to sell out the Hollywood Bowl or Madison Square Garden, but in England, where The Stones, The Beatles, Zeppelin, The Who, etc, are all from.... Oasis reached heights in the 90s that none of them ever reached! Ever! The Stones never done Knebworth to a fuckin quarter million ppl, ya know?!!And frankly, the Beatles at Shea Stadium in NYC weren't nearly as big, either! In The United Kingdom, as a live rock n roll band, no one has ever been bigger, or better, than Oasis were at the gigs leading up to, and at, fuckin Knebworth, man! Those were rivaled only maybe, in relevence, by the Roses at Spike Island! The Beatles are the standard, absolutely, but what LIVE gigs really stand out from the Fab Four??? There's Shea Stadium, as I mentioned, but beyond that...??!!💯
The Stones did Knebworth in 1976 to an estimated audience of 110.000 to 250.000, so yeah they kinda did do that. And that’s not even counting their 2006 show in Rio de Janeiro for upwards of 1.5 million people.
The Beatles never had that big of an audience true, but when they had their last US tour, stadiums weren’t even the norm. They started it! And to say that Oasis is in the league of Beatles, Stones or Zep is simply laughable.
@@JKentF The Stones audience has since been assigned a number much closer to 110,000, so they were a bit shy of Oasis. And fuck Rio, man! We're talking UK bands & UK success, & Oasis is right up there w/all the UK greats! The Kinks would be another example of a great UK act that just weren't as heavyweight in America! (What's the Story) Morning Glory? did 23 million copies worldwide, 4.94 million in the UK, 4 million in the US, alone. They cemented their legacy just w/Definitely Maybe & (What's the Story) Morning Glory, alone IMO.
@@matthewrider6456 Ok, so what about the Stones in Hyde Park 1969? Half a mil.
The Beatles played for a LOT of people in The Philippines in 66. Like 200,000 if not a little more.

Kieth Richards gets to be called a guitar hero lmao and noels underrated songwriting barely gets noticed wow wow just wow seriously wow
Keith is super influential. That's why, take the jumpin jack flash riff or the guitar work in Honky Tonk Women. Noel can't play like that even though he's good at his own
@@mckinleylowman6412 Damn staright. Richards riffs are ten times anything Noel G ever wrote, on guitar or on paper. Brown Sugar, HTW, JJF and Gimme Shelter shit all over anything Noel has ever done. Sit down and respect the masters Liam you ain’t shit
This is so hilarious. Imagine getting shat on by all of your heroes! That must not be a great feeling at all. 😂
Sounds like those 4 old farts were jealous of the success Oasis were having at the time. 😂
hahahahahahaha could be!
Right yeah
I’ve got a question for you. How did Oasis get away with not being sued for Lyla? A very good but blatant rip off of Street Fighting Man. Noel must’ve done something very clever taking riding the right up to the edge of the law with that song as he does very well. He gets right up to the line of paying homage and plagiarism. Or maybe Mick and Keith couldn’t be bothered. It would have been Allen Klein of Decca that would have gone after them like with the Verve’s Bitter Sweet Symphony. Yet they really did rip that off if you hear where it came from.
Concentration Camp by The Soundtrack Of Our Lives. Toured with Oasis on the Heathen Chemistry tour and then Noel wrote Lyla.
I’m with Keith💯
Now it's widely known Keith Richards hates everything post 1969. You name any 70s band, Keith hates them. Zeppelin, he can't stand them. The Who, calls them a joke. Black Sabbath, yeah you guessed it. George Harrison was the same way. They both criticized recent bands-artists, many that were inspired by and look upto them. I am sure they'd love if Chuck Berry, Elvis and Little Richard instantly turned on them. Why not just embrace the younger bands the same way they're idols did to them? Noel Gallagher is at least as great of a songwriter as George ever was, in my opinion far more prolific. And oh jesus Mick's Jagger comment...by his rationale any music without dance-able beat isn't good. GTFO what a joke
And McGranny never wrote a good song in his life.
@@yeetboidalydaly8555 Whoa whoa...I wouldnt go that far. I think McCartney was just reacting against Noel-Liam's big mouth comments in the press. They did say too much, back then. McCartney seemed like he wanted Oasis to stand on their own, not to compare themselves to Beatles. He wanted the best for them. Now, Oasis does stand but at that time the Beatles comparison did hurt them(especially in america) and cause ppl to dismiss them more quickly. And McCartney respects Noel as a songwriter now, thats all that really matters
Their music is derivative though. Mccartney was bang on the money there
Sir Mick's still never gotten over the fact that The Beatles were bigger than The Stones. Same with Keef.
"Something" is the only thing that can be better than some Noel's catalog. But I agree that Noel's songwriting is superior not only as a melody guy but also lyrically.
dwarfs against 4 giants, oasis classic? just a bubble, after the splash nothing, barely wonderwall and wanna live forever, the rest are gone with the wind, their fans find them better, personally they don;t move me,ok they had commersial success for a while,a passing mode, time is the test for everyone, the 4 won it years ago no matter what Gallagher brothers or their fans will say,the talent and the musical legacy of the 4 is all the water of our planet against water in an espresso cup
