Netherlands 2-0 England (1993) WCQ

  • England's World Cup qualification hopes are dealt a shattering blow as they lose 2-0 away to Holland in October 1993. In what is effectively a winner takes all clash, Graham Taylor is left furious with the referee over his failure to send off Ronald Koeman for hauling down a goalbound David Platt - Koeman going on to put the Dutch ahead before Dennis Bergkamp settles it. Earlier Holland's Frank Rijkaard had controversially had a goal ruled out for offside. England's only hope of qualifying would now be if the Dutch lost away to Poland and they thrashed San Marino in the final game.
(Properly watching this match for the first time in over 20 years, I'd forgotten just how open this game actually was given so much was at stake. England carved out several decent opportunities and the Dutch, with flying wingers Overmars and Roy, always looked dangerous going forward - that save in the second half by David Seaman to deny Rijkaard from point blank range was tremendous but ultimately long since forgotten due to the result).

It may be too late, football, sadly, has regressed, effort and hard work having overtaken skill and intelligence. The “pressing” tactics so prevalent in modern football are suffocating the game. The denial of time and space, allied to increased fitness levels, mean the best players being either discouraged or constantly thwarted in attempts to display their skills. The great international teams of the last fifty years - West Germany (1972), Netherlands (1974), Yugoslavia (1976), both Brazil and France (1982), Russia (1986), and Spain (2010), are but endearing, albeit distant, memories.

Koeman should have been sent off as should the Dutch number 5 for that tackle on Parker , but what annoys me most is , after Koeman pulls Platt down , from the resulting Free Kick , before the ball is even kicked there's a Dutch defender about 4 yards from the ball , it hits him and Holland go on the attack and the Ref does nothing about it . Yet when Holland get a Free Kick , as Koeman kicks the ball Ince does exactley the same thing moves before the ball is kicked , gets booked and the kick is retaken from which Koeman scores . Inconsistancy

Looking back now, I don't think I've ever witnessed a game since with so much controversy and drama... so many incidents: Rijkaard's 'goal' should have stood in the first half; Ronald Koeman should have clealy been sent off though it's debatable whether his foul was inside the area; the free kick should also have been retaken as Wouters was about 2 yards away when Dorigo hit it; his brother should have seen red for his foul (almost like Nigel De Jong on Xavi Alonso!) on Parker; and Pallister's foul looked inside the box too!! Yeah we invented the game, but that doesnt make us a great footballing nation. When it comes to winning we are almost embarrased. What has happened is that the liberal elite has made Englishness synonymous with racism, subjugation, empire. Look at the independence debate in Scotland, all the time England is being blamed for Scotlands lack of prosperity. In this climate our footballers who put the shirt on don't care because theyve been told not to care by outside elements. You might think i'm over dramatising, but as an international team we are finished.

Aside from Koeman's foul (that should have resulted in a red card and possibly a penalty), the ref allowed the Dutch to charge Dorigo's free-kick, but booked Ince when he did exactly the same thing at the other end a few minutes later. The Dutch were obviously the better team but it shouldn't cloud the fact England got well and truly reffed off the park.

3- Ronald Koeman had to be dismissed (red card) since he was the last man and Platt was facing the goalkeeper to score.
4- Edwin Koeman should have given a red card and a some jail time for that flying kick, yet he only receives a warning.

Even in that day and age Koeman could have been sent off as well. Watch virtually any game in which he played; if there are more highlights than just the goals, you will probably see a dangerous challenge by Koeman. He committed some outrageous, blatant fouls and always got off lightly, I cannot understand why. Check out this video: czcams.com/video/daxebPaaCCY/video.html and watch his assault on Baggio at 6:17 and laughably he goes unpunished, while a teammate who fouls and lashes out at Schillaci seconds later is sent off- this shortly after Baggio scored from a free kick, which Koeman had conceded. Looking back at all the blatant, cynical and often vicious fouls he committed, it is impossible to understand how he got away with it.

@@teodorbojilov7395at USA 94, the Bulgarians and the Romanians were unstoppable. Hagi and stoichkov were at their height of their powers

Taylor never picked Chris Waddle. One of the most idiotic decisions by an international manager ever.

As a Holland die hard fan I could imagine as a 17th years teenager I would be histerical when Koeman and Bergkamp scored…too bad I missed this game when no live broadcast easily accessed anywhere online or on tv as it is now… I really miss watching Dutch team in this high quality with full of world class players….

Despite the fact that Koeman should never have been on the pitch at that stage...

Koeman was so fortunate that he didn't get sent off both 2 game.

Love the silence from the commentary when Koeman scores 😆

Seaman badly out of position for the free kick - no way he could get across to a very gentle chip.
