A Christian Guy's experience on Dating apps... Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge

  • Should Christians be on Dating Apps? My Experiences with Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge. I know, it's sort of taboo even in 2020 to talk about Christians being on dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, Hinge. With the events of our world today, it's becoming increasingly hard to meet fellow Christians to potentially date and one day marry! This is my experience as a Christian guy trying out online dating and using these dating apps!
First, I would like to stress that there is nothing inherently sinful about being on dating apps, just like being in the market to date in person is not inherently sinful. Both methods of meeting people have similar opportunities for sin however, each with their own pros and cons.
For example, in both cases, it is easy to fall into the sin of lust. In person it’s far more difficult to stare and fantasize without being noticed, but on a phone app, you’re being fed picture after picture of potentially provocative women or men, which can be a trigger to some of us, and should be avoided at all costs.
Another thing that is not exclusive to online or in-person dating is idolizing a person or relationship. Often times on dating apps or meeting people in person it would be very easy for me to slowly start to prioritize finding a relationship over my work, and more importantly, over meeting with God. Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. That includes idolizing finding a spouse. Ask yourself if you are disciplined enough and mature enough in your faith to dedicate yourself to God more than whomever you meet.
Finally, are you dating for a purpose? Do you have any sort of prospects of supporting yourself and a family in the foreseeable future? Are you working? In college? Do you have some semblance of a plan? If not, I recommend forming one before trying any kind of dating. As Christians, dating for fun shouldn’t even be a consideration. Every romantic relationship that we start ought to be with an eye towards marriage sometime down the road. Otherwise we are putting ourselves in the way of temptation for no reason. If you can’t see yourself spending the rest of your life with a person, just be friends. If the only reason you can stand to be with the person is because they’re incredibly good looking, probably don’t pursue that relationship, I’m assuming the reason you hang out with your friends is not based on sexual attraction, if it is, you probably really need help.

I was on Hinge for over three years and just deleted it. It was hard to delete as I was getting matches almost weekly with women, some very attractive and Christian gals. I did go on several dates. However, things fizzle so quickly on there. I felt like I had a good connection with several women on it and even went on dates but suddenly she would just stop responding to me or just lose interest very quickly. I know that is just how dating is in general to an extent, but I think Hinge profiles really create an idealistic version of a person that is not actually who they are, and the other person can often feel let down when they get to know who you really are in person. People also have a toxic abundance mindset and always think they can do better than you. It really killed my self-confidence so I am going to try to just date the old-fashioned way and trust God with my dating life.

I’ve been considering dating, but the days we are in now. I’m wondering if it’s even worth it. I’m not to sure if I’m gonna find a woman who is willing to wait until marriage. They way the enemy has it set up Society has it to where you go on three dates and then the bedroom happens. I’m not looking to date for a few years then get engaged for another years... that’s not how it should be. I truly believe we are in the end of days, the signs are all around us and it not like what people have been saying legit compare what going on now to what is said about the end of days. I waiting for a woman for 7 years and she wasn’t a believer and we only last 2 years, she wanted kids, but I don’t. So I guess I’m Concerned about the time we have left which is not long at all maybe, maybe two years lord willing (not gonna be a easy 2years though).

Hey Brandon! I’m sorry that it sounds like things have been kinda tough for you in the dating scene. Up until about 4 or 5 months ago I felt the exact same way that you did. Truthfully though with the way the world is right now, if you can handle it, being single might be the best for His Kingdom! Whatever the case, stay on the lookout for God’s will, He may very well have someone for you even though right now it feels hopeless. God bless! :)

Now is definitely the time to be become solidified in our singleness with Christ if that’s where He has us for a season. God’s people are a remnant, so in my mind it’ll never come easy to find a spouse that goes against the culture, but God can always provide the way. Blessings to you!

I feel you. It's hard as a Christian even finding another Christian who genuinely is serious about their faith. I recently went on a date with one who thought it was weird that I wanted to wait until marriage... It might be weird to the world but it shouldn't be for another Christian. Anyway, safe to say that didn't go far. Praying God shows up with the right one at the right time, sooner rather than later🙏🏾
We're definitely living in the end times but I'm not giving up hope. The word says we should "commit to the Lord whatever we do and He will establish our plans". Hoping you persevere in these times and continue to believe you'll find your wife.

Agree with you on every point you made! It really resonated a lot with me and I'm sure other people need to hear this as well.
I feel us Christians need to see our season of singleness as an amazing time to go deeper in our walk with Christ and truly devote all our time to him, before he blesses us with our spouse.
Personally, I'm not at the place to be dating right now, and the Lord has been reminding me that while it is good to pray for my future husband and think of him with a kingdom mindset, my main focus should always be Jesus. I admit, I've been guilty of unintentionally idolizing my future spouse. But since God chastened me, I've been devoting more time to him and have been feeling closer to him in general. :)
The biggest thing I think we need to remember is that if we follow Jesus, he'll give us our spouse in his perfect timing. So there's no need to worry about when, where or who we'll marry. God's got this. We just need to trust him. He'll let us know when we need to pursue someone.
Thanks for the opportunity for reflection and discussion! 😄 Keep speaking the truth!

@@boldfaithproductions where and how did you meet your girlfriend in the end? What’s her criteria that differentiates those you’ve met through dating apps? Is she also a godly Christian girl? How was the first few dates going where and what you’ve done to realize you both are the ones for each other?
The reason why I’m curious about all those questions is because there’s a seemingly decent guy I’ve dated 2 years ago through dating app (I deleted the app afterwards because I need to focus on my life) recently contacted me back. We went out for another date again and after sharing that how I became more faithful in Jesus as a Christian within 2 years and how my belief helped me walk through my difficulties that one way I felt he tried to please me by saying his also Christian, the other way tried to convince me that it was my inner-self helping me get through it. When I said I’m practicing devotional activities everyday that he said if bible got burned then rewrite wouldn’t be the same but the science would be the same.
Despite all the above we have different opinion but his a good listener and we can be able to talk about some other philosophical topics, he can always giving a good respond without being judgmental. He’s also a gentleman when we went out and he seemed pretty like me wants to talk on the phone or planning for the next dates.
So I’m stuck one way that I think it’s going to be tough if he’s not a believer, another way is that god put me in the rest of datings within 2 years and all in a sudden this decent guy I used to date contact me back. Also to be honestly 2 years ago I had a good crush on him but in the end he stood me up for 2 dates with not so convincing explanations, and this time when we’ve dated I no longer feel the butterflies or romantic feelings instead I told him I want to slow down and not to rush to any commitment. Now, here is the problem: I meet cute, interesting girls I'd like to know better and I feel so inexperienced, so unable to give her a good dating experience with me. Let me just say that what separates a relationship with Christ from Jews and Muslims is that rather than relying on ourselves to do enough to get to heaven by pleasing a god, Jesus instead came down to us and suffered a painful death just so that we would never be separated from Him! We have to trust and surrender our lives to Him and He pays our everlasting debt! That love of Christ is the reason I have the views I have. How can I not love when I have been loved SO SO MUCH! all have sinned and fall short of the glory of GOD and we all deserve eternal condemnation in hell, for the wages of sin is death. the reason for this is that GOD is perfectly just and righteous and because the LORD is perfect, one sin leads to death, but through faith and sacrifice (since there can be no forgiveness of sins without the shedding of blood), and the LORD JESUS CHRIST laid down HIS Life for us, by the FATHER’s grace, men can be saved.
so because the LORD is perfect and HE so loved the world and hates the death of any man, the LORD came into the world in the likeness of man, made manifest in the flesh, and HE came not to be served, but to serve, and to give HIS Life a Ransom for many. the LORD shared in the struggles and life of humanity (making what HE did even greater since HE became poor so we may become rich through HIS poverty and HE temporarily gave up HIS glory in Heaven to give HIS Life as a Ransom for many). the LORD went on that cross after being beaten and struck and mocked, HE was insulted and provoked and humiliated and even through that all, the LORD said, “FATHER, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” and the LORD JESUS CHRIST shed HIS Blood, released HIS SPIRIT, and bodily died so that we may be eternally forgiven.
when the LORD rose 3 days later, a new covenant was established where we are not justified by the law, since the law brings death, but we are justified, cleansed, sanctified, and saved by the grace (unmerited love and favor) of GOD through faith in HIM alone, and not by any of our works. the righteousness of the LORD JESUS CHRIST on the earth (HIS perfect, sinless fulfillment of the law) is accredited to all who are born again (the children of the LORD GOD Almighty) as righteousness on us through our faith and by GOD’s grace.
only JESUS CHRIST saves. please turn away from all of your sins and live all to the glory of the only true and living GOD, YAHWEH, and praise the LORD GOD, the One Who gave all of us life and laid down HIS very own precious Life for us all so that we may be saved by HIS grace through faith in HIM alone.
