    I've learned something new today: balancing the speakers' level adjustment. I have the surround at +10dB and front at 0dB. Will correct that later.
    Also, about the settings, it would be nice if there was an option to save them to USB. Maybe in the future...
    Your vids are very informative and well done! :)

    Another good video. I have klipsch rf35 mains with dual 8s and I prefer to run them full range with the double bass feature to get the sub to help. I think it gives a fuller sound and I also think it improves the sound staging for the punchy bass and it seems to have a nicer natural roll off. I run a 100hz low pass on the sub and it hides itself nicely. Enjoyed the video.

    This is an excellent video and goes into more detailed explanation than the one I have produced which is specifically for Denon receivers..... I found that Audyssey does not do a good job except perhaps in 'perfect' rooms..... once you get good with the settings and have an excellent test disc (Joe Kane's Digital Video Essentials HD) you can do much better setting up manually.

    Hi, I have a question about pioneer AVR, I own elite VSX 50 and in pioneer there is an option in the remote control audio parameter where phase control plus function is activated when you play Dolby and DTS movies or videos, this is set to 6 millisecond by default, and it sounds great bass is great through mains and all but it does not sound right and bass is missing in some Blu-ray’s and dvd unless I change the settings to 9 or 12 milliseconds but then I loose bass in other movies and videos, can you pls help and tell me what’s the best setting for phase control plus, and please Note the MCACC does not change this setting. You have to manually adjust, please help how it works it’s so frustrating. Thanks

    So I think I done it right but I'm not sure. I didn't set my master volume to 0 cause I didn't know I was supposed to do that. I set up the spl meter and went through the cutest tone for each channel and made the adjustments to level each speaker to 75db. Based on my limited knowledge does that just mean now that rather than 0 my reference point of 75db is at volume level 40 on the master volume? Or should I go back and do it again and set the master volume to 0?

    I have a passive 5.0 soundbar with like 3 inch speakers, and a Polk 12" sub. My Sony AVR autocalibrate gives me different crossover settings between 170 and 200 for the front center and surround speakers. The soundbar says it starts at 60Hz per the specs. My Polk ends at 130Hz. The soundbar specs state set crossover to 120Hz. If I run my autocalibration function to get proper distance and adjust my SW dial so that after calibration I am at 0db on my AVR, what would be the reccomendation to determine what crossover settings to go with, spec, autocal, 10Khz above 60Hz, THX default? Autocalibration seems a bit "movie theatre" boomy to be honest.

One is db level and other is the basic speaker level. My question is what setting do I use to get the db level to 75.0db. Do I just set my db levels on my center at +5db and the others at -5db and leave them alone. Then just use my basic individual speaker levels to get them to 75.0db.

    Also, I wired the extra 2 satellites in series to the back surrounds, thinking I would be getting a more enveloping sound. !!! Any critique and advice greatly appreciated.......

    • @jcelldogs
      @jcelldogs Před 3 lety

      That's a tough one because depending on the brand of center channel, your speakers might barely go below 100hz by themselves. Generally speaking, you want to put the crossover at 80hz. At 80, you can't really hear too much of where the sub is coming from(which is good), but above that, you can't hear its location more. According to thx standards, 80 is the sweetspot to set the crossover. It also produces fuller sounds from the surrounding speakers, without straining them(the more low frequency you ask a speaker to play, it will struggle more)

    • @MarshallGuthrie
      @MarshallGuthrie Před 10 lety +1

      It all comes down to the question of what would be most effective at reproducing bass frequencies. If the answer is, "your subwoofer", then set them to small. Some AVRs offer a "double bass" feature where frequencies below the crossover are sent to both your sub and mains. For your speakers this might make sense, but keep in mind:
      1) Some manufacturers will list 24hz as their bottom limit, but at what relative level? -3dB? -6dB? -10dB?
      2) Generally, bass peaks and nulls can be well dealt with using built-in EQ of modern AVRs. For some EQ systems, correction will not be applied to the mains. In this instance, to get the benefit of EQ, you must set your speakers to small and have the bass frequencies sent to your sub.

  • @adamfilip

    Is there ever a need to have your speakers full range? (Large) I have 6.5" B&W Towers and 6.5" B&W 3 way Center. Should I cross those over at 60hz or so? Thanks!

    • @MarshallGuthrie
      @MarshallGuthrie Před 10 lety

      You generally want the speakers and sub to be sent the frequencies they are best designed to reproduce. Only very high-end (and often physically large) main speakers, paired with substantial amplification, can reproduce bass frequencies as well as my $800 SVS subwoofer. Thus I set my mains to small, and send the bass frequencies to my sub. I also don't try to use my sub as a full-range speaker for the same reason...it's just not designed for those frequencies.
      So the answer to your question would only be "yes" if:
      1) Your main speaker truly is best suited for reproducing bass frequencies out of all of your speakers, or
      2) You are using a "double bass" feature in your AVR to send bass frequencies to both your mains and sub. I would caution the use of this feature though...some main speakers will produce audible distortion when fed loud bass frequencies due to port noise or hitting maximum driver excursion. Unless your speakers really can keep up with your subs, I'd generally keep them at small.
      In the end, trust you ears.
