There is something about her, so intelligent in her way of speaking I could listen to her for hours.
Maybe she should write something.
I look forward to how they portray this book in the TV series. This the best book by far. I love how much more we got to see of Pat’s character. That last chapter with Strike’s admission has left me feeling like I want the next book straight away 😊
JK Rowling has absolutely smashed this out of the park, a great book. She has such an eye for detail, you really feel like you are there standing next to the characters.
I never figure out who did it, and this one was no different!’

Brilliant author, brilliant series and I can't wait to see the TV adaption. I both read the books and listen to them on my walks. I love the back stories of each of the characters as I believe it makes them feel more three dimensional. I know JK has said there will be 10 books in the series and Covid may impact the timeline, but I do hope she will reconsider and write more than ten in the series.
Literally just put down this latest book and as always, can't get enough! I never want the books to end! This one for me is definitely the best so far , can't stop rereading the last chapter!!

This was the best book in the series, very captivating, causing me a great deal of fear and anxiety for what is happening to and around Robin. It seems to me that the series darkens just how the real world darkens around us and it is very scary. I hardly can wait for the next book to see if there is any 🌞 on the horizon in Robin and Strike ❤.
I loved this book. If love is the right word, I was in a state of visceral unease punctuated by terror for much of it.

I simply can't say enough how amazing this series is. I am new to these books, having started The Cuckoo's Calling just last week, but in seven days time, I'm well into Lethal White and struggling to do anything other than read.
Lucky you!! I’ve read all of them and loved most. Reading her book, to me anyway is all consuming
I always fall into a terrible, deep hole after every Strike novel. But this woman is such a gift to every fiction addict.

Seen a lot of criticism of IBH, so just wanted to chime in that as a child of the early internet I massively enjoyed the text chats. Vikas stole my heart.

I loved the last book about the online world, I recognized the internet culture and it was so imaginative, a whole world inside the Strike world.
I was wondering how she could come up with an equally fascinating case this time, but this one was even better. I could barely stop reading during the most tense part and my heart broke for so many of the characters.

This is another great novel...and I will be rereading it. It is ALSO a really creepy novel, for the UHC is so real...and a cult that could actually be a part of our crazy world. Yuck.
Robin is amazing in the novel...and who doesn't love Corm?
Cannot wait for the TV series adaptation of this novel...and obviously, the next book.

I am also Pat’s fan. And I agree: this book was hard to read, sometimes I felt physically ill (when Robin experienced physical abuse or hunger).

I should say I felt a bit bad for Ryan Murphy. He is SUCH a good guy AND a great boyfriend. I felt like he deserved a bit more voice in the book, a bit more agency given to him… and I understand we often saw him through Strike’s eyes (and his jealousy, of course). But still… I enjoyed reading about Mathew. Even though he was a jerk. It just added a dimension to Robin’s and Strike’s relationship.
I agree but I think your supposed to feel that way about Ryan. He’s a solid guy.
I have doubts about Ryan. I get the feeling he is going to crash and burn very soon.
I predict drunk Ryan is not so awesome. But maybe that's too obvious a thing to do.

IBH is muuuuuch better the 2nd read through. Give it another chance - knowing the "reveals" actually dramatically improved the story upon a re-read.
IBH is honestly my favourite book out of the Strike series, although Running Grave and Troubled Blood come close. I just wish the book ended with a verbal showdown between Strike and Anomie.
I am reading it again ( TBH I mean) I hate to be defeated by anything 🙄 no reflection on Jo, but my lack of patience reading the texts was the problem!!
I liked it a lot better on the second read, but it’s still my least favorite book of the series. Lethal White used to be my least favorite. I still enjoy them all and return to them often, it’s just a matter of degrees
For me I despised, and I mean viscerally, was The Silkworm.
The concept of a book within a book, great. I just hated the book! Didn’t feel any great drama or mystery and it was difficult to read.
Generally I admire her ability to plot and foreshadow.
The book was great and I must say (I am sorry to JKR) I loved it soooo much more than the previous one!

It a fascinating book
When I heard that literal CATCH phrase "I admit the possibility." I thought yeah, wow. THAT would work.
I am very familiar with the iChing and I have to say, her use of it throughout this book is genius. Sometimes, it reflects the devious use of it by a character; sometimes, it describes ancient sexism or superstition. Other times, it provides its ancient wisdom. Wonderful. It certainly shows that the best lies have some truth in them.
Did anyone else notice her hand gesture when she mentioned Littlejohn? I didn't realize until now that his name is quite the fitting innuendo.

I found the end of the investigation rushed as I wanted more detail of how the leaders of the cult got caught. It got skimmed over, and Strike being able to detuct of what happened to Daiyu a bit of a stretch.
I can see that...but maybe we'll get some of offal of this story (what happened to the leaders of the cult...further) in the next book. Just a thought.

Agree. But also, isn’t it always like this? With all the books, I feel like the last part is a bit rushed.
So this is something of a take on Scientology. I thought the book was very well done, but very taxing to read. Robin here is a very courageous character and Strike is very worried and vulnerable as she takes on the challenge of investigating the cult. While I was unable to get through the previous one, this one is superb and it really worked for me too.
I am a huge fan. This series scared me! I had to quit, but I see how brilliant they are, especially if I had to quit them!

She knows how to pull you in, right? I get hooked on one of her books and cant put it down. She has done that from the very beginning of the Harry Potter books and that's why THIS book is the scariest of them all. She knows what pulls people in, what hooks you. How to write an addictive cult. I worried so much about Robin, I had to FORCE myself to go for a walk and remind myself Robin IS NOT REAL. And Rowling isnt judgemental of the people who join. She's quite compassionate about them. It helps me to be the same.
OMG - this book's on another level, even though I've always loved the Strike series.
I found the cult investigation very dark, creepy & close to home (having brushed shoulders with one myself).
Just finished it superb a return to form as I thought Troubled Blood and The Ink Black Heart where poor
I don’t agree that the books were poor. JK writes incredibly well - but they were different. I loved TB but found IBH tricky. However, I put that down to not being very aufait with the modern way of communicating. JK is amazing. 🌟
When are they gonna make season 6
They start filming in January IBH. Can’t wait to see how they do it. On my2 nd reading , still struggling with it 🤣

@@katemate7253 I wonder if they are going to use on-screen text like Sherlock did in his first episode. I am breathless to see how the screen writers deal with all the tweets and chatroom sequences. I wouldnt like to tackle the IBH and bring it to screen. I am sure it will be fine.

I enjoy hearing JK Rowling speak- but she actively avoids meeting her readers now. Perhaps all writers- including myself- should do this? But keep contact by supporting book festivals

don't like this much- it doesn't really go into the actually interesting aspects: does the cult in this book according to the author have models in the real world? (e.g. Scientology)? How/why would the author conceive of a cult in the 21st century that requires foregoing mobile phone usage and social network participation of potential recruits (which is something very unlikely)? it's basically just a book promotion- pretty bland

Yes, the point I was trying to make: there's a fundamental difference between the social connectivity of 15-25 year-old's (representing the bulk of new recruits in her fictitious cult) in 2020 compared to - say - 1990. I'm (sadly : -) old enough to remember well all the media concerns about the Moon- sect or the Bhagwan cult etc: her narrative would work well with those. But, really, can you yourself imagine a place in middle England NOW where teenagers and twens forego their phones to the point of being completely isolated from news / media? You'd get people simply flying their drones from the outside of the compound or holding up phones and filming and, voila, things abound on social media. Sorry, but this narrative doesn't work.... (I still enjoy reading her stuff, she's a superb narrator and craftsperson of characters)@@sollertiskhan3254

But there are groups in the US who forgo all technology their entire lives, the Amish. and live as farmers.
There are RETREATS, which you can go to TODAY(Not saying they are cults), where they prohibit technology.
Just the other day, I a saw a short of this LA influencer who talked about going on a "darkness" retreat, where all her technology was taken. she was locked in a dark room for a number of days, etc. Willingly ofc.
But that's the hook of the cult.. a retreat without technology. Then those who get hooked stay, those who leave.. leave.
Idk maybe I haven't looked, but I haven't exactly see a ton of personal indivdual's footage from Scientology ofc.
